I have been searching for something like this for quite a while. The iPad is a great device but I actually wanted the ability to input data and manipulating data easily not just consume it. I bought one of these tablets 2 weeks ago for work and absolutely love it. The handwriting recognition is amazing. All that for a grand, and the roughly four hour battery is more than enough time for me in any meeting... and how long do you go without seeing an outlet - there even on most planes these days.
@ebjeezer and buy the way to the earlier comment about the fact that if people really praise this device they couldn't have really used apple product... I have an iPhone and a Mac Book Air and think they are great, but this Asus slate is amazing for productivity. The quality of the screen is fantastic.
Palm rejection = awesome. Android is cool, and I love their phones, but nothing compares to Microsoft OneNote, which s probably one of the very few things that Microsoft have going for them :P
Wow, all these apple sheeple. First the ipad or any tablets on the market cannot compare to the ep 121. This is on another level that the other tablets cannot even touch. Sure the battery life is not too good. I don't expect the fucking space shuttle to have good mpg either. The ipad is like a smart car and the ep 121 is like a ferrari. It is expensive but it is a real computer in a tablet. It runs a real OS not some gimmicky garbage OS that is limited and restricted.
only reeason ipad was so successful is because of the trust apple has with its people, the iphone is and will continue to be the best smartphone on the market, so people naturally assume the same goes for the ipad. but this tablet is much better only problem being the company doesnt have as good as a reputation as apple
I want a tablet that I can open an excel spreadsheet and write in numbers and values in the cells. Is it possible on this? will it recognize the handwritten numbers? Does it write fine enough? It would be a great job tool if so. It eats up so much time to print out the spreadsheet, go to the field and write down readings, come back and imput the numbers again on the computer.
@kiro1990122 I saw recently that Win8 will have same requirements as Win7, so in theory yes. In fact this particular tablet is pretty far above those specs. However also bear in mind that Windows 8 can run on ARM processors like the ones in pretty much every sub-£600 tablet out there at the moment.
I got one of theses and this thing is a beast I love it . best tablet on the market. I'ts a bit pricey compared to the ipad but this is a real computer and not a toy you give to your little ones to play on. You get what you pay for.
@kevmack101 I gotta ask, do you use it for art at all? Do you know if it compares favorably to Wacom cintiq tablets? I'm considering one but information about its Wacom digitizer seems to be kind of hard to come by.
@suhaybhafiz Most of the people wanting this tablet are buying it for the tablet factor and the PC side. You don't spend the money for this tablet just to do basic tablet functions you do on an ipad, you buy it because you want and expect way more than just the basic "tablet form factor."
I'm interested in knowing the most important thing for tablets - accuracy. If I'm a student taking notes in class, how accurate is it? Can it duplicate my handwriting perfectly? How much of a delay is there? Almost every tablet I've seen including ipad, ideapad, hp, and previous asus models have failed in accuracy. You solve that and I buy a tablet finally.
leave it up to the itards to come and bash this awesome piece of hardware. It has a wacom pressure sensitive digitizer, that alone blows the crap out of the ipad. Please stop trying. And all you itards talking about battery life, this is running a full blown windows and can run PS CS5 for a good 3 hrs. Try playing infinity blade on your ipad/ipod touch/iphone4. I guarantee you will only get 3 hours. All the other apps the ipad don't even tax the hardware that much, thus the 9+hours.
@crawdick they are exactly in the same league and they can be compared because they both target same customers. the only apple product i have owned is their ipods. all my computers are windows based computers. all I was saying is for me, when it comes to tablets, 3hr battery life is too short.
@crawdick yes they are in the same league and they can be compared because they are targeting the same type of consumers. the only apple product i have is the ipod and everything else is windows based products. All I was saying is that I prefer longer battery life
@deniz11muis1 Your anger doesn't make Linux a less perfect operational system. Format you computer and install Linux. It will help you to become a happier person.
I dont know how anyone could say that its a fail when it comes to productivity. Thats just moronic. Pressure sensitive touch with the Wacom digitizer makes the Eee Slate far superior to the other current tablets on the market for the artist, student, or business professional. I would never own an ipad, because its boring, the OS in inaccessible, and its just not customizable. The Eee slate is a far superior machine hen it comes to productivity, because Windows 7 is a far superior OS.
You dont HAVE to use a bluetooth keyboard, but one is included with the machine? Eee Slate has a screen 2" larger than most tablets out right now, yet still only weighs a little over 1kg. $1099 version includes 4GB DDR3, aswell as 64gig solid state drive. 64 gigs is more than enough for program files, and should you need more space, an external HDD could be attached to its 2 USB ports. Eee Slate also features mini HDMI port and card reader.
I see that fuckin lag on the pinch to zoom? Why does apple seem to be the only ones that can get this shit right? Quit putting out devices without flawlessly smooth software, its pathetic, especially since the hardware is certainly there to make it blazing.
@MrJpmoneypants its not proprietary, they use the same capacitive technology as everyone else. Look at windows phone 7, zune hd, and many other touch OS's have just as smooth or smoother touch support. And the smoothness isn't the screen itself, its part of the software.
@lannim01 hands down to apple for lag-free products but i'm done with that stage. it's fast... then what? i can't just pinch and zoom all day. when i get my hands on this sweet asus eee slate, i will squeeze out every juice of it and enjoy its power.
@vsuparham You don't have to always use they keyboard it's just a nice option to have. I would plan on using this tablet as both a laptop and tablet so simplicity isn't the name of the game if your wanting to do more like most of the people interested in this tablet.
Did someone say they can get an iPad for that price. You can get the iPad for alot cheaper than that, the question is when will an iPad actually do anything besides email and ebook! Did you see the full version of CS3 running on this thing? The wacom will cost you 2k to do what this thing lets you do and a lot more?
when word processing is needed on an ipad you can purchase a bluetooth keyboard and use google docs, or quick office etc. The ipad2 had a dual-core 1ghz processor what should meet just about anyones power needs. Not to mention that with over 65,000 apps there should be an app for just about any productivity need. If someone sees this asus device as appealing, they would get much more use out of a cheaper netbook than this. I just dont get it.
I hear people comparing this to an ipad, I do energy management programming that ipad will never support, ipad is for fun, this asus tablet is for productivity. But can someone answer me some questions, can you do windows XP virtual and does the SD card slot act as storage or does it just read pictures and stuff.
@2RJR2 Yeah, OK,,ipad cannot even run a simple nes emulator at full speed without frame skipping, ipad is garbage in a nice shell. no flash, no usb, no SD, no stylus, no hdmi out, no 1080p, no pressure sensitive screen, non upgradeable ram, non upgradeable ssd/hdd, no user created applications, no mkv, no avi, no torrent, no fun!! No need to jailbreak either.
Fuck that, I'll spend the extra cash and have a lot more fun.
@polaris911 I don't think that's right. The guy in the video pronounced it the way it's meant to be. Ace-us is just how people typically say it. Kind of like Nokia. It *should* be pronounced NO-key-uh. But most people call it no-KEY-uh, which is wrong.
This vs iPad2. Let's see. iPad2 runs a different OS that fails! And this runs WINDOWS 7! iPad2 is simply a bigger iPhone. This is a computer. I rather go with a slate eee PC that runs Crysis then a iPad2 that barely runs Civilization 3
@xk150 Why on earth would you do that? Hell, Windows 7 is so much better. Windows XP is being slower and sluggisher on me all the time (since I know Windows 7).
@ziplobob4 honestly i do enjoy apple products. But even a devout apple user has to admit that this tablet is better. Yes, the battery life is low but this tablet does so much more and you get more for what you're paying for. The tablet comes with a bluetooth keyboard, the pen, and a case! I don't see apple offering bundles like that, do you?
I would have to respectfully disagree with you. Apple doesn't offer those items that you mentioned as bundles because they dont have to. As an iPad 1 & 2 owner, i would have to say that while yes this device has a more powerful processor it is a total fail when it comes to productivity. Whats the point of a tablet if i have to use a bluetooth keyboard with it. I can get a newtbook for $700 less money. Simplicity is the name of the tablet game. Windows 7 definitely kills that
@JazzyBaby1029 apple users are irrational. Thats y they like apple. They like all apple products even if they are good or terrible. Apple represents an idea to people, not computers.
@JazzyBaby1029 Hands down windows has awesome ink support, but the operating system of windows 7 is way too much for the tablet form factor. An iPad with an ink support would have been awesome.
@JazzyBaby1029 That's because they represent totally different strategies. Apple (at the moment) is not interested in selling a traditional pc in a tablet format. And they are pretty transparent about that. So yeah, the EEE Slate is "better" in the sense that it's like your traditional PC on the go, but not so much for mobile light duty tasks if your claims about its battery are correct.
@moogleii I'm aware of this. I was responding to an earlier comment comparing the ipad to the EEE Slate. And like I've said previously the people looking to get this don't want just a basic tablet they want something more. And just because it does more doesn't mean that it isn't just as mobile as any other tablet such as the ipad. I know people that own both of these so I know.
@b4igetu But can you have the i5 run at a low voltage setting to save power? Whats the point in getting a mobile device that isnt mobile longer than 3 hours? I hate to say it but look at the iPad 2, it has 10 hours of battery life...
@MULTIMEDlA I am aware of that, but what is the point in having a PC in that form factor if the battery life is that short? No matter how effective a PC is you can’t use those capabilities in the short amount of 3 hours effectively, and believe me I HATE bringing up the iPad 2 and I know far more then you think I do. Why an i5 when you could have an i3? It has the same amount of cores, and plenty of firepower for the type of uses a Tablet is designed for but it consumes far less power.
@MULTIMEDlA The ASUS slate isn’t practical. Cool, but impractical. And you have to compare it to other things like the iPad because in the real world people compare prices and capabilities of products. If I can get a Tablet PC called the iPad, and yes it is a TABLET PC, for $500 why would I buy the $1000 Asus EP121 that doesn’t have even half the iPads battery life?
@ziplobob4 if you are comparing a pc tablet to an iPad well all I have to say is I am sorry for you... the whole idea of a PC tablet is not for little music, games and browsing. There is no point in comparing them, this sort of tablets are for professionals. Not kids.
@OVERLYINLOVE Yes you can resize and move the keboard however and wherever you want! If you are on a Windows7 PC - open Start Menu and type in the search box, type in Keyboard and open up the On-Screen Keyboard option. This is essentially the same keyboard that the Eee slate uses.
Also this is a Tablet PC. Anything that is compatible with your computer will be compatible with this. It is a laptop in tablet form-factor. It has 2 USB slots and even an HDMI port.

It looks great!! i've been waiting for a windows tablet which would allow for pen and touch capabilites. As an artist this Tablet would work miracles.Definately getting this!
throw it out, and redo the OS entirely designed for capacitive multitouch input as well as pressure sensitive stylus support. REDO the entire office suite centered with a tablet-minded GUI. Restrict all the useless background services that murder battery & performance.
Restrict apps to tablet-UI styles only. PC UI's ruin the experience.
responsive multitouch gestures. pinching lags hard on win7.
bring out SDK's that let devs implement touch interfaces to their applications easily.
I've seen plenty of videos on this device but I have yet to see one that shows if you need to use the page bar to scroll up & down or left to right. Can you scroll/navigate using a finger in the middle of the page?
@AVGPistolUser Yes, Windows 7 has a feature called finger panning. Also, I have tested it at CES 2011 on the Eee Pad Slate and it works pretty well the action is very fluid and quick.
I am in the market for a computer table for my daughter. I want handwriting recognition to be as good as pad and paper. I want to see videos on writing and making sketches.
I am in the market for a computer table for my daughter. I want handwriting recognition to be as good as pan and paper. I want to see videos on writing and making sketches.
I have been using Windows 7 on a TabletPC for since the RC1 beta. It works great. Microsoft's problem is the same they've had for years, poor marketing. Where are the commercials showing how useful OneNote is? Anyway, I'm getting one!
I like how all the PC companies know how to actually make a tablet. What does Apple come up with? An oversized/overpriced iPod Touch. Wake up people, there are obviously better tablets out there. This is why I frown upon anyone who buys an iPad.
@PlRATEBAY: As I said early, ASUS Slate in fact is not competitor for Android and iOS devices. It is from other class. Like iPad for Kindle, for example. It is fully functional PC in the form of tablet with _possibility_ for tablet operation. As for me it is great. As for me.
@PlRATEBAY No, actually Windows 7 is made for touch screens from the start. There is no "custom" Windows 7 for tablets, the software on the tablet is no different from the software on a regular computer. The only thing different is they put in a few add-ons so it is easier to use.
Also, I like how you call what Microsoft does bad, yet you name your profile out of a website that steals software and gives people viruses.
@Rubes2525 I know Windows 7 is made for touch screens. But that is for desktop class desktops. You know why Apple didn't put Mac OS X on iPad, or any other Android tab? Because you don't have input except touch. And i used touch desktop at a friends house and the OS isn't meant for touch only. Also a desktop don't have to worry about power, laptops have a pretty big battery. And Windows is power hungry. So if you put a desktop OS on a tab you have power problems. And about my name: get real.
@PlRATEBAY That depends on the type of laptop. A for hundred dollar laptop will rarely get you performance, but this thing's running on an i5. Since it's a slate, you're not expected to do too much for multi tasking either. I've got a tablet (TX2) with Windows 7 and it runs just fine, not very power hungry at all. Vista is another story though. But I think Windows 7 is plenty light enough for most laptops.
@PlRATEBAY It's funny how you think Windows 7 will never work well with a tablet, yet all you have to do is look up at the video to know your wrong. I would admit it loses against the iPad in battery life, but that's a small price to pay for a lot more functionality.
@Rubes2525 Well, how is a tablet good if the battery is dead? Windows is meant for desktop computers/laptops with a mouse or touchpad. Call me dumb but I know more than you do.
Please, people who DON'T needs real productivity and versatility on-the-go but needs 10+ hours time on batteries PLEASE don't comment this! This device is just NOT FOR YOU.
P.S. iPad, Galaxy Tab, etc. is really cool, but Eee Slate is not about it. :-) Eee Slate is portable workstation PC in tablet formfactor. Period.
The formfactor is pretty perfect, 12 inch is big enough to do a lot of ink and 16:10 aspect ratio is great. There are plenty of us who don't appreciate the new 16:9 standard, hopefully we can get more 16:10 screens

Fuck that, I'll spend the extra cash and have a lot more fun.

polaris911 1 year ago
@polaris911 I don't think that's right. The guy in the video pronounced it the way it's meant to be. Ace-us is just how people typically say it. Kind of like Nokia. It *should* be pronounced NO-key-uh. But most people call it no-KEY-uh, which is wrong.

This vs iPad2. Let's see. iPad2 runs a different OS that fails! And this runs WINDOWS 7! iPad2 is simply a bigger iPhone. This is a computer. I rather go with a slate eee PC that runs Crysis then a iPad2 that barely runs Civilization 3

@SMGJohn I don't know about Crysis...I need to overclock my tower to run that...of course, that is on hardcore specs...

Yes you can, however you'll have to install 3rd party software to get the same features windows 7 supports, and you will be limited to 3.5GB of ram.
DJSkuldChan 1 year ago
@xk150 Why on earth would you do that? Hell, Windows 7 is so much better. Windows XP is being slower and sluggisher on me all the time (since I know Windows 7).

@ziplobob4 honestly i do enjoy apple products. But even a devout apple user has to admit that this tablet is better. Yes, the battery life is low but this tablet does so much more and you get more for what you're paying for. The tablet comes with a bluetooth keyboard, the pen, and a case! I don't see apple offering bundles like that, do you?
JazzyBaby1029 1 year ago 53
@JazzyBaby1029 Yes it's and I love the Apple products too.
realshadow8 11 months ago
@JazzyBaby1029
Windows 7 definitely kills that
VSUPARHAM 11 months ago
@JazzyBaby1029 It does come with bluetooth keyboard????? ordering one now...
RestDayer 11 months ago
@JazzyBaby1029 apple users are irrational. Thats y they like apple. They like all apple products even if they are good or terrible. Apple represents an idea to people, not computers.
karz12 11 months ago
@JazzyBaby1029 Hands down windows has awesome ink support, but the operating system of windows 7 is way too much for the tablet form factor. An iPad with an ink support would have been awesome.
suhaybhafiz 10 months ago
@JazzyBaby1029 That's because they represent totally different strategies. Apple (at the moment) is not interested in selling a traditional pc in a tablet format. And they are pretty transparent about that. So yeah, the EEE Slate is "better" in the sense that it's like your traditional PC on the go, but not so much for mobile light duty tasks if your claims about its battery are correct.
moogleii 10 months ago
@moogleii I'm aware of this. I was responding to an earlier comment comparing the ipad to the EEE Slate. And like I've said previously the people looking to get this don't want just a basic tablet they want something more. And just because it does more doesn't mean that it isn't just as mobile as any other tablet such as the ipad. I know people that own both of these so I know.
JazzyBaby1029 6 months ago
Whats the battery life?
ziplobob4 1 year ago
@ziplobob4 It is like 3 hours, but it is running a full os and a i5 processor. It has more power then the average computer.
b4igetu 1 year ago
@b4igetu But can you have the i5 run at a low voltage setting to save power? Whats the point in getting a mobile device that isnt mobile longer than 3 hours? I hate to say it but look at the iPad 2, it has 10 hours of battery life...
ziplobob4 1 year ago
@ziplobob4 No offense but you have no clue whatsoever.
Are you honestly comparing an iPad with a tablet PC ? lol
This a full computer running with many capabilities - not some little toy like an iPad.

It has the same amount of cores, and plenty of firepower for the type of uses a Tablet is designed for but it consumes far less power.
ziplobob4 1 year ago
@MULTIMEDlA The ASUS slate isn’t practical. Cool, but impractical. And you have to compare it to other things like the iPad because in the real world people compare prices and capabilities of products. If I can get a Tablet PC called the iPad, and yes it is a TABLET PC, for $500 why would I buy the $1000 Asus EP121 that doesn’t have even half the iPads battery life?
ziplobob4 1 year ago
@ziplobob4 if you are comparing a pc tablet to an iPad well all I have to say is I am sorry for you... the whole idea of a PC tablet is not for little music, games and browsing. There is no point in comparing them, this sort of tablets are for professionals. Not kids.
MULTIMEDlA 1 year ago
I would like to know if you can change the size of keyboard on the screen?(The keyboard looks small)
Can it take a picture and turn it into a PDF file? or is their a "small adapter" that can scan handouts in school to make them a digital copy.
OVERLYINLOVE 1 year ago
@OVERLYINLOVE Yes you can resize and move the keboard however and wherever you want! If you are on a Windows7 PC - open Start Menu and type in the search box, type in Keyboard and open up the On-Screen Keyboard option. This is essentially the same keyboard that the Eee slate uses.
Also this is a Tablet PC. Anything that is compatible with your computer will be compatible with this. It is a laptop in tablet form-factor. It has 2 USB slots and even an HDMI port.

throw it out, and redo the OS entirely designed for capacitive multitouch input as well as pressure sensitive stylus support.

Rubes2525 1 year ago
@Rubes2525 Well Windows 7 is not meant for a tablet, Android and iOS is custom build for tablets.
iPad isn't bad but isn't great either but it is the first mainstream tablet on the market so expect flaws.
Microsoft has to bite the bullet and create a custom Windows 7 for tablets. This is just plain bad what M$ does.
PlRATEBAY 1 year ago
@PlRATEBAY: As I said early, ASUS Slate in fact is not competitor for Android and iOS devices. It is from other class. Like iPad for Kindle, for example. It is fully functional PC in the form of tablet with _possibility_ for tablet operation. As for me it is great. As for me.
DobryiBobr 1 year ago
@PlRATEBAY No, actually Windows 7 is made for touch screens from the start. There is no "custom" Windows 7 for tablets, the software on the tablet is no different from the software on a regular computer. The only thing different is they put in a few add-ons so it is easier to use.
Also, I like how you call what Microsoft does bad, yet you name your profile out of a website that steals software and gives people viruses.
Rubes2525 1 year ago
@Rubes2525 I know Windows 7 is made for touch screens. But that is for desktop class desktops. You know why Apple didn't put Mac OS X on iPad, or any other Android tab? Because you don't have input except touch. And i used touch desktop at a friends house and the OS isn't meant for touch only. Also a desktop don't have to worry about power, laptops have a pretty big battery. And Windows is power hungry. So if you put a desktop OS on a tab you have power problems. And about my name: get real.
PlRATEBAY 1 year ago
@PlRATEBAY That depends on the type of laptop. A for hundred dollar laptop will rarely get you performance, but this thing's running on an i5. Since it's a slate, you're not expected to do too much for multi tasking either. I've got a tablet (TX2) with Windows 7 and it runs just fine, not very power hungry at all. Vista is another story though. But I think Windows 7 is plenty light enough for most laptops.
pascbjumper2 1 year ago
@PlRATEBAY It's funny how you think Windows 7 will never work well with a tablet, yet all you have to do is look up at the video to know your wrong. I would admit it loses against the iPad in battery life, but that's a small price to pay for a lot more functionality.
Rubes2525 1 year ago
@Rubes2525 Well, how is a tablet good if the battery is dead? Windows is meant for desktop computers/laptops with a mouse or touchpad. Call me dumb but I know more than you do.
