Some instructors may fear that you are not learning good steady rhythm. I see it as two stages of learning, or two different focuses.
With the Slow Down tech you are still learning the tune. Then, later, use a metronome to develop more steadiness. Focus on one learing technique at a time.
I do that too, but I heard it was bad, better to play the whole tune at the slow tempo until you can speed it all up evenly
