look at how many vids are on youtube from this band regardless of who is fronting the band. If you liked Extreme, you'll like this cd, album download, whatever
Musically, "VHIII" was as strong as anything Van Halen ever produced. It wasn't commercially successful because everyone was tired of EVH's crap playing musical frontmen. Unfortunately, Gary Cherone was a dang good frontman and never got his due in that regard. But this song in particular was outstanding!
When III failed and the record company rejected the followup that they had recorded in 1999 it took EVH 10+ years to get over it. He looks happy now for the first time since 1998, looking forward to the new album.
@minimumpayne i remember reading that Warner rejected the follow up to III and ed just decided to give VH a break, hence why Cherone left and the Ed started drinkin again and then had health issues. Its great to see them back again, just a shame it took so damn long!
Wow the ending of this song sounded terrible. And what the hell happened to Eddies tone?Terrible. And Gary Cherone? Wow,what a mistake. I hope their new album with DLR sounds better than this---
@Thirdgen83 this is in 98. which was like 13 years ago. ed cant go back to his old tone because he had that tone was made with marshall plexis. and hes endorsed now with fender for his 5150IIIs
Ive not heard VH 3 all the way through but Fire in the Hole and Without You are as good as anything they've ever done. The more i listen to it the more i think Gary Cherone got a raw deal.
@downeyfan20 Because music is subjective and relative. I think Gary was a good and fitting singer for VH, even if for only one album. His lyrics were intelligent and conscious and his voice was powerful. The songs on VHIII were emotional and powerful and when it came out, I was very thrilled with it, especially since I thought Balance was lackluster.
@DarthKazi I still think that Mikey's harmonies make the chorus. I am not a fan of Wolfie (nice name) and I think that the only reason that Ed wanted to reunite with DLR was so he would have the chance to play with his son on stage before he got too old. Pretty lame excuse as to why MA wasnt invited back...
@resqfireman How can you assume both sides of the reasoning? I think Mike was done with the brothers and Alex even said he never liked his bass playing and never had him in his monitors. Whatever. I think it's a bit premature to say you are or are not a "fan" of Wolfgang until new stuff is put out and his original playing is put out there. Other than that, we have crappy cell phone videos of very loud concerts.
@DarthKazi How can I assume? Because I read an interview with MIchael Anthony shortly after it was announced that Wolfie would be taking his place, and he was surprised and hurt by it, thats how I can assume. But, he probably was fed up with the VH boys, more so Ed than Al, I would think. About 1996 is when Ed started to really go off of his rocker. And I will be surprised if VH puts out new material.
@resqfireman I just heard this week that VH got new material completed. The dude said it sounded like old school VH, butwhat the heck is that, VH always sounded like VH to me. I do think Gary got a raw deal, he isnt as bas everyone thinks. I personally didnt even give him a chanceuntil I wanted to hear some new VH and go back and listen. But as much as Eddie was my idol, he def had his troubles and was extremely difficult to deal with in the years you pointed out.
@DarthKazi I do miss Mike's vocals though. Although, I think the world of little Wolfie. "I don't care if he is grown now. He will always be a little kid to me."

I didn't care so much for Gary's singing, but speaking as a musician, I really loved the arrangement on several songs on this album.

EVH needs to go back to his old tone. This has too much midrange, and is too fuzzy-distorted...

I really liked the VHIII album. I guess I'm one of those who feels that Van Halen is Eddie and Alex, regardless of who else is in the band...

@DarthKazi yea but when you have Gary Cherone ruining those musicians talent, how can you enjoy it
