You can really use anything that is flammable. But some things can start something close by on fire. Good things to use are bug spray rubbing achohal and mail polish remover. ( nail polish remover is great but toxic so it's your choice if you want to use it
You can use Cotten balls but it tends to fall apart and get flammable stuff on your hands. So just take a little extra time and you will have safe fun unless you like the dangerous life!!!!

Polyester isn't such a great idea, it could melt on to ur hand and burn the crap outta it use 100% cotton or I wouldn't do it.
