For those who are blaming the Stones for letting Mick Taylor go: it was his own decision to leave the band (in december 1974). But yes, it's true: they never were generous to Taylor for giving him the songwriting credits he deserved. Time Waits For No One is very much a Stones song that's uplifted by Taylors brilliant guitar playing.
I love how the person who made this slide show put a lot of emphasis on showing photos of Mick Taylor. He was musically the most talented Stone ever. This was by far their most creative and musically best period ever.
Exceptional quality recording and studio-precision playing in a live environment by the boys....only in the 70's.
To this day, I thank my folks for gettin' busy at the right time and having me in 62', for I grew up with this music.
Good to see some retro kids nowadays listening to this era's music, the trick is to trace back the bands to early in their career, not after them becoming bubble gum.
Besides being Taylor's greatest performance, which should once and for all establish that he should be spoken about the same way people speak about Clapton, Hendrix, Page, etc.,etc., whats even just as remarkable is that this live version is as good or perhaps better than the master recording officially released on Let It Bleed 4 years earlier, which many people consider their finest track, on par with Satisfaction, and JJF. How hard would it be to put this exact lineup back together for a show
They never were or ever will be as good as they were with Mick Taylor. And it's true. They never mention him.But in case you didn't or don't want to know Mick and Keith are money hungry ruthless pricks. They had to be back then. The music buisness was and still is organized crime. But it was worse in the sixties and seventies and eighties. Now these old bands make more than they did in their heydays.Today,if you don't sell 10 million CD"s, out of the gate. Bye Bye.It's 6 of one half dozen of another
The greatest Stones recording in their incredible history. The band was as tight as they ever were live. The vocal is strong, guitars are perfect. Taylor is clear, quick and untouchable. The recording is commercial release quality. I would expect this to be released some time in the next couple years along with the Brussels material. The seal on the vault has been broken with "Ladies and Gentleman". They didn't want this stuff out for comparisons but they know the end is near now and it is time.
@schapman5 I guess you have put it right, my friend. they are close to the end, and what is left is a great period with Mick Taylor: what came afterwards was just an attempt to look what they were before.
@oclero You are so goddam right..Mick Taylor ! Shame on Mick J. and Keith for not giving him credit - he liftet Stones to much higher level than ever since.
Best Shelter of all was Altamont. Oakland from the same tour may have been next. The `72 tour version from Ladies & Gentlemen was pretty damn good, and Philadelphia `72, Fort Worth `72 , Brussels `73 and Rotterdam `73 all have lots of power and some majestic, soaring (and self-indulgent) Mick Taylor riffs. Also recommend a spooky little bootleg version with Keith on vocals... think it was recorded before Let It Bleed was released.
@classic1008 I tend to agree with you that Altamont was agreat performance on this song. Although all the versions listed in the comments to this video are great, they are all in a way so different, because Taylor liked so much to play every time a bit different.
It's a matter of taste, though, and I respect all other's opinions: all those mentioned are great versions of a great song. Thanks to the Stones for it!
I dunno, this is great but I like the ones from Philadelphia 1972 a little better. I think the Philadelphia performances have more fire and energy, although Jagger's vocal in this one is better. Great solo by Mick Taylor in this one; it's hard to pick "the best one" !!
@Tsugaheterophylla You're right too. It's hard to pick "the best one." I've loved GS since I first heard it 40 years ago. There were so many great live performances of the song- and others- during 1969-1973. Every time I think I have my favorite, I hear another boot from those years and change my mind. This one is certainly one of the best. Thank you Mick T. and Keith!
@GravityBoy72 I have to agree. The Stones had so many incredible live performances from 69-73. The guitar playing of Taylor and Richards was unmatched. YES- release it all!
LETS FLOW MICHAEL TAYLOR ! YOU ARE THE MAN .

It's a shame Jagger and Richards were so insecure that they didn't want Taylor to get credit for song writing or splendid solos.

This recording is Mick Taylor's finest moment with the Stones recorded live. It may also be the Stones best live track authorized or not.
