  • I really loved this era for it's singing style so controlled and the lyrics so clear.

  • This is OUTSTANDING. Thank you VERY much for sharing this clip with us!!!!!

  • I've never heard of her. I just watched a movie on TCM called I DOOD IT with Red Skelton and Leona Horne had a performance in it a s well. Awesome pianist!

  • she is blatantly looking back and forth at the Teleprompter, i'm surprised it looks so obvious - her eyes are darting all over the place!!! Other than that its a great performance

  • Allyuh - She's ah Born Trini!!!!!! - No Lie

  • Never heard of her, but I like her ! She was 1950's eye candy.

  • Wow.. She was GREAT. Why havent I heard of this woman? Wow. I love YT.. Thanks for sharing. I am always trying to find out more about GREAT Black people in our history... I mean most everyone had a contribution but I just want to know who these people were

  • How is it possible. I have been studying jazz piano for almost 20 years, and i did not discover this treasure before now, after watching rhapsody in Blue. This is the most fantastic combination of piano player and female jazz singer i have ever, and will ever hear.

  • Charlie Mingus The best

  • Look for :

    The Heat's On Mae West

    for more Hazel !!

  • So much grace and beauty!!! I read that she was the Anita Baker of her time, and it's fascinating how much they favor each other!! I'm glad that I learned about Ms. Scott... I'm a new big fan!!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • @Poprocks6710 You are rignt! I was trying to figure out who she reminded me of and she does resemble Anita a bit.

  • What a talented lady & human rights activist.

  • Great Job!!!!

  • i really like too much this softly and delicius jazz.

  • Wow, I'll be perfoming this song soon...she lets me know the standard I'm reaching for. Thanks for posting!

  • amazing

  • She's Fantastic! She left us too soon!

  • GO girl! Hold it down for the female pianists...

  • thanks for the great clip. imdb says she had a 15-minute TV (variety?) show on the Dumont early TV network, in 1950! her records were a kids' contest prizes in a leftwing newsletter from the '40s, this is the first I've heard her play or sing. I have a Hazel Scott sheet music portfolio of "5 SOLOS FROM BOOGIE WOOGIE TO THE CLASSICS" (C) 1943. w/Prelude in C#-, Hungarian Rhapsody, Dark Eyes etc. (her transcriptions). Mentions "child prodigy," Cafe Society Uptown, "beautiful colored girl".

  • A great performer, thanks for posting, 5*

  • It's a real treat to see her play! She really seems to enjoy it.

  • Yes, shes got that Trinidad accent. Go T&T!

  • That's so great! As for the date: Scott asks the people to join the "March of dimes 1955" Does it make this 1955 (or 1954?)?

  • I love Miss Scott!

  • You should check out some earlier performances of her. Clayton Powell was INDEED a fortunate man. She was talented, sexy... she had it ALL

  • You never heard her name because the McCarthy era blacklists of so-called "communist" sympathisers effectively killed her very promising career.

One of the items the McCarthy-ites hit her with was the fact that she has entertained Russian troops during World War II - WHEN THEY WERE OUR ALLIES!

Some things never change - they just take different forms . .

  • First I heard of blacklists in the record industry. What label was she on? And who else on that label couldn't work?

  • She Did stuff on Debut Records which was owned and run by charles mingus and max roach

  • And Charlie Mingus and Max Roach went along and created a blacklist? This isn't sounding probable. I know you never claimed they did. I'm just saying the previous comment sounded a bit far fetched--and you just tossed is farther.

  • alot of blues and R&B artists in the 40's and 50's we'rent allowed to appear on TV, Radio or on major labels because of the color of there skin, Mingus was blacklisted and that is why he started Debut Records with Max Roach-It was really bad at this time-They even had white artists coming in to record black music which led to the black musicians not receiving royalties for there work-Look up Payola scandal and race records...Hazel did perform for the soviets which MacCarthy did not like!

  • It seems difficult to distinguish between international politics and Jim Crow. The blacklists were created by the industries affected, not the government. Blacks always had difficulty making recordings--and some didn't like that the large percentage of the profits they made went to record companies. So they started their own labels. The racism extended to recording sessions, in that blacks had better get it in one take because they didn't get the studio time.

  • Rejected by abc records

  • Being rejected by a big company is more reflective of big executives not knowing the product or audience they try to sell to. You think the execs at ABC knew why people bought Coltrane? All they knew is that he sold records--because he had already sold records. If Hazel were a household name, then ABC would have be listening.

  • What a talent... what an incredible pianist.. I can't sing and play at the same time and off course, jazz improvisatilnal piano training is so different from classical but..THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAVE NEVER HEARD HER NAME!

  • Nice one from the "archives"...

  • I've never heard of Hazel Scott before now...What a beautiful voice and talent!

  • Adam Clayton Power wasn't just a great MAN but he had superior taste in Woman (Hazel Scott is his wife).

    Peace,

    Brotha J

  • Put a nickel in slot

I want to hear Johnny Johnston croon

Or a groovy little song by Hazel Scott

Or Harry Gibson shouting out a tune

  • This is wonderful. She's so great. Thanks ever-so

  • Beautiful!

I am so into Hazel Scott. She is such an amazing pianist that's it's really easy to forget that she was a great vocal talent as well. Speaking of talent: Nobody does Foggy Day like Charles Mingus. WOW!!! Look how young he was!

  • thankyou for this add
