My issue is that this is a cover of a fairly slow song. Double bass sounds better when the song was written to accommodate it in the first place.

For the most part I agree with you. If they had gone too heavy anywhere before the end it wouldn't have sounded right at all. The end of the song is all about looking forward (by my interpretation) which tends to be an exciting and uplifting "event", so based on that I think it fits very well.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting the song; I've never listened to much Aerosmith.
