This is such an underrated film. For all its action,the time between Banderas kneeling in the mud to offer an Islamic prayer for courage then participating in a Viking death chant is a testament to people's understanding of each other in times of crisis.It's grimly beautiful.

If you look into it Iba Fadlan Wrote back in 922AD like the movie states about his time with the northmen, whitch was latter taken by Micheal Crichin in 1976 and rewrote it into a novel called "The 13th Warrior" then came the movie. Point in Hollywood got this one right for once, you didnt.

This movie was unjustly maligned and underrated, partly because it was the only major motion picture to come out about medieval/dark age action other than Braveheart and was unfairly compared to it thusly. But I think it at least has a better ending than Braveheart; it's happier, more uplifting, and leaves room for a kickass sequel where he encounters other strange people/creatures "...across seas of monsters and forests of demons."

Too bad Peter Menzies shot it in such low light as I believe was the reason Eaters of the Dead was not given more recognition. cheers...

Where all those events happening might just be as true if investigated. The places, water spring, canals, the river outlet, mountains, caves etc. resemble the real story or the myth as well.
