To try to explain the high rate of suicide or psycho-problems among them, just a hypothesis: Military life is very much the contrary of the modern American way of life (top values: Being a consumer, having fun, taking it easy). My French isn't good, but from what I read of the article my conclusion was that the train that was sabotaged contained elements of the 12th SS, but I read nothing to indicate the 12th was involved in the reprisal. I would think if they were, it would have been recalled in the war crimes attributed to the unit after the war.
The local Resistance had blown up the railway and stopped a train transporting 400 men and 60 armoured cars of the 12th SS. it was this unit which devastated the nearby village and shot 86 hostages. Weeks later, the 12th SS suffered heavy casualties in Normandy. The survivors were judged in 1949 for this war crime.
I found some more information about the trial after the war. I have never understood why so many men found guilty of war crimes received such light punishments: i.e. Walter Hauck, who ordered the executions, stood trial in a French military court, was sentenced to death, but the sentence later commuted and Hauck released in 1957.

You are right. I don't know why men like Hauck were not sentenced to death, and were even released after 10 years. Even the French policy of reconciliation with Germany cannot explain indulgence for an ex-SS. I know only that, generally, sentences were radical in 1944-1946, then became more and more lenient. I knew a former French SS (a rare case !) who had fought in Russia. As he got caught only in 1946, he was sentenced to forced labor, not shot.

Catarkiller, They were murders and massacared quite e few Canadian POWs, so the Canadians did the same to them. They did not do too well in their first fight with the Commonwealth forces shortly after D-Day. They were lacking in training but not spirit. They were not the most elite in the Wehrmacht. Grossdeutschland units, Panzer Lehr, and other Heer and Waffen SS units were better, but the 12SS learned fast as a matter of their own survival.

As for WW1, let's put things straight: It was not the Versailler Vertrag which was unfair. It was the French victory at the battle of the Marne in 1914. Germania was earmarked by Gott (Wotan?) to rule Europe, and the Allies had simply no right to get on her way. They had to be punished, which happened in 1940. Then things went out of control, but of course it was not Gemany's responsibility

When you see a soldier smile, such as in this film, it is never of joy for going into combat, nor is it for defeating the enemy or successfully holding ground. No, it is because the soldier is happy to still be alive. Because in a few hours, he may not. Keep that in mind when watching WW2 films such as this one.

Das ist eine Sage für Kinder. Again, he SS legend for the naive. Many regular Wehrmacht divisions were just as brave and efficient as the SS. We have examples of SS units which gave up ground or surrendered. What made the SS' reputation was their political fanaticism and ruthless cruelty to civilian population: Not exactly the definition of military courage.

Actually while there is some truth to your statement, it is not correct. The SS were widely recognized by their opponents as skilled and courageous in combat. They fought sometimes with complete disregard to their own casualties. The 12th SS certainly did so in the actions against the British in Normandie.
My comments are not political in any way, some idiots fail to realize that. Just making that clear.

Right. I've talked with some US veterans (from Viet-Nam). To try to explain the high rate of suicide or psycho-problems among them, just a hypothesis: Military life is very much the contrary of the modern American way of life (top values: Being a consumer, having fun, taking it easy). Becoming a soldier is much more a shock to them than it was to young men 100 years ago, who had been used to hard life, effort and "parents who say no" since their childhood.

It sure can be tough to get used to a military way of life but it is 100 times more difficult to go back to civilian life. Some simply never can. Once you have experienced the battlefield you will carry it with you every day for the rest of your life. It just does not go away, it will change you forever and more often than not it is a change that takes away more of you than what it gives you. No matter how decorated a soldier you are, you never look upon yourself as a hero.

Yes, and this was also true on the other side of the Iron Curtain: The Soviets "amnestied" and employed thousands of ex-nazis, either in their military-industrial complex or in their secret policy and espionage agencies.
Even before the liberation of France, some Gestapo leaders had received guarantees from Allied secret services that they would be safe, in exchange of their changing sides.

Moshe: We get the point. . .the Nazis were scum. I do not, however, think it is fair to lay all of the crimes of the Nazi state at the feet of the Hitler Youth, deluded and duped from the time they were very young.
With all of the horrific crimes of the Nazi state, it is still fair to say that the 12th SS Hitler Youth were brave and fine soldiers, as were their opponents. It has also never been proven that they committed more atrocities than their Canadian or British counterparts.

hum-hum There was still a big difference: the SS, how brave soldiers as the were indeed, were EDUCATED to commit atrocities trained ideologically, not only to kill civilians and prisoners, but to lose all judeo-christian values and human respect. That's why, for example, after their 1st encounters with SS in Britanny, the French SAS troops decided they would no longer make SS prisoners.

Be that as it may, the 12th SS was never accused of any atrocities against civilians in Normandy that I know of. They were accused of killing approximately 50 prisoners of war ( Canadians ).
It is well known that Canadian, British, and American troops also on occasion shot German prisoners of war.
My point was not aimed at the SS in general, only this one unit.

I just checked on Wiki "which is not always "the Bible", but seems seriously documented in this case): "The acknowledged war crimes of the division happened in Normandy where over 100 Canadian soldiers were executed by their captors in the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend."
It also killed 86 civilians aged 15- 85 ans and unrelated to the Resistance, in reprisals for a train derailment on 2nd April 1944 near Lille.

Yes. I found it on wiki/Massacre_d%27Ascq (in French). Wikipedia is always questionable, but it gives references, including Cl. Moisel, "Frankreich und die deutschen Kriegsverbrecher: Politik und Praxis der Strafverfolgung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg". Göttingen: Wallstein, 2004.
This massacre stirred much fuss: The bishop of Lille and even Vichy notabilities protested, a huge crowd attended the funerals of the 86 victims. On the German side, the Feldgendarmerie tried to stop the SS.

Thanks for this information. My French isn't good, but from what I read of the article my conclusion was that the train that was sabotaged contained elements of the 12th SS, but I read nothing to indicate the 12th was involved in the reprisal. I would think if they were, it would have been recalled in the war crimes attributed to the unit after the war.

The local Resistance had blown up the railway and stopped a train transporting 400 men and 60 armoured cars of the 12th SS. it was this unit which devastated the nearby village and shot 86 hostages. Weeks later, the 12th SS suffered heavy casualties in Normandy. The survivors were judged in 1949 for this war crime.

I found some more information about the trial after the war. I have never understood why so many men found guilty of war crimes received such light punishments: i.e. Walter Hauck, who ordered the executions, stood trial in a French military court, was sentenced to death, but the sentence later commuted and Hauck released in 1957.
You would think the French of all people would have wanted the death sentence carried out, or at least life long incarceration.

You are right. I don't know why men like Hauck were not sentenced to death, and were even released after 10 years. Even the French policy of reconciliation with Germany cannot explain indulgence for an ex-SS. I know only that, generally, sentences were radical in 1944-1946, then became more and more lenient. I knew a former French SS (a rare case !) who had fought in Russia. As he got caught only in 1946, he was sentenced to forced labor, not shot.

In the 1950's, a huge number of Nazis were granted pardons, amnesties, and early releases due to a Cold War policy to de-emphasize the criminal backgrounds of thousands of nazis. The new enemy was the Soviet Union, and the West was eager to employ the German population in its efforts to stand against communism.

"Only" forced labor? Let me tell you that in Russia, this is in many cases the same as a bullet through your brain. Actually, most would prefer the bullet, it's less painful. My grandfather did ONE year in a gulag camp between summer 1940 and the german invasion. During that time out of 8000 deported estonian university students some 2500 perished in the camps.
