@MrPointyarrow Karate used to mean "Chinese Fist" It comes from Kung Fu. Japan learnt it from Chinese fighters and then changed the name later to mean "Open Hand". To this day Japan still represses how much Karate is really from China and based on Kung Fu.

Jackie Chan says Kung Fu but he really just means martial art.

@MrPointyarrow bruce lee stole from the shaolin monks and made it his own . they actually opposed lee's style as 'kungfu'. lee being 'free' broke the rules of the master arts that has been taught for thousands of years. kungfu has a lot to do with discipline and the art is much older than bruce lee or karate. kungfu isnt martial arts, kungfu is a way of life and thats why jackie chan said it.

Chinese kung fu came through Okinawa one of the japanese islands then through to mainland japan many years later with demonstrations given by the late great master Gichin Funakoshi to the Imperial palace.
