  • Great,Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fabulous! Thanks for the up.

  • Totally stunning!

BTW- Steve Allen also had Art Tatum on his show....now we're lucky to get Lady Gaga or Dave Sanborn!

  • Thank you so much for this!!! Just want to say that this is a haunting

excerpt, as the two brothers died only a year or two apart from each

other. Has anyone read 'How My Heart Sings'? Its the biography of Bill

Evans. Its a really good book that provides detailed insight into his life

and those closest to him. I've been a Bill Evans fan since I was 16, when

I discovered him on the 1996 Encarta World Encyclopedia disc. Again

thank you for posting this, as I love Bill Evans.

  • Incredible, thank God for Steve Allen for creating and preserving this, and thank you very much for posting it. Essential listening for every who is serious about music.

  • God bless you man for posting this.

  • Thank you rickstolk for posting the full version of this wonderful video. May I dare to say that this video defines music in general and I hope there's more mainstream musicians who pursue the truth.

  • I wish I could play like Bill's "B" section- ha! (Or even his "A" section)

  • absolutely breathtaking 40:00

  • After coming into jazz, truly, only months ago, I have listened to many, many different recordings, interviews, masterclasses, etc. I can honestly say that in this video Bill has changed my guidelines, my limits, my perception of how to attack jazz. Inspiration is at the very least. I consider myself blessed to encounter these words of wisdom, as I will use them as a foundation that will allow me to speak to the world. Musically Spiritually Emotionally . Universally!

  • @Izicanplay take it easy...

  • This video is just like being part of an incredible Master Class. Thank you very much for posting.

  • Ooops, what an unfortunate statement at 16:39.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and presume Pet Sounds hadn't been released when this doc was made. If Brian Wilson isn't an artist, I don't know what an artist is.

  • 0:01-1:45

    I just found my mantra.

  • I gotta say, the comparison to the beach boys is a bit unwarranted. Personally, Brian Wilson is as genius as Bill Evans, just a different kind of genius.

  • @mrtambourineman1973 Absolutely. Especially given that this special was done the year the most genius of all pop albums was put out - Pet Sounds.

  • @JasonsVinylObsession I think Allen's point was that jazz is a "higher" art than pop or rock, not "greater".

  • This is great!!

  • Thanks a lot for this upload of historic dimension - impressive that there were such programs on TV compared to the shitloads of crap we have today. This video is priceless!!

  • I love when they discuss "finding the avenue" at 38:00!

  • wow

    amazing just amazing

  • His opening quote of the film is one of the most profound explanations of music and peoples preferences iv'e ever heard. In one small paragraph he explains all of modern music and why generational distaste of electronic music is so rampant.

  • 22:08. So beautiful chords and melody at the same time. So much coulor.

    Bill Evans ftw

  • This is amazing. Probably the best video on youtube in my opinion (and i've seen many videos of cats falling over etc.) Thanks for the upload. So much to think about after watching this

  • "Mozart loved to improvise because it was free and Bach"

  • ...a waltz for bill evans!...great video..

  • Thank you!!!

  • What a find! Thank you thank you thank you for bringing this back to life.

  • @ChuckNorrisKratosLOL

Bill Evans was one of the pioneer jazz pianists of the last century, especially in his creation of what we call modal jazz today, as the documentary explains.

  • I'm 19 and I listen to McCoy Tyner, Red Garland, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, etc. and as beautifully as they all play in their respective styles, it's increadibly frustrating to listen to them because they are all just miles ahead of me. But to hear one of my first musical influences, Bill Evans, speak in such a clear manner about the creative process, AND for him to even say that he wasn't sure of where he wanted to go with his music until he was 28? THE most inspiring things I've ever heard!

  • @ChuckNorrisKratosLOL

    He's Steve Allen.

  • "It's better to do something simple that is real." This is an amazing video!!!

  • whats the song in the beginning?

  • @badamineful. It's "Theme from Spartacus". I know it's on the complete verve of Bill Evans, not sure if it was originally released on any album.

  • @will0795 (Theme from Spartacus-Bill Evans) sounds a lot like (Romantic Warrior-Return to Forever)

  • @badamineful (Theme from Spartacus-Bill Evans) sounds a lot like (Romantic Warrior-Return to Forever)

  • Thank you thousand times for posting this. I've seen the shorter version of this number of times and did not know someone actually had the full length version.

  • Happy B-Day Mr. Evans!

  • Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" Bill Evans on YT.

  • excellent video.

  • the dude in the beginning is a riot haha xD

  • @willshakeyou

In case you were being facetious.....the "dude" at the beginning practically INVENTED late night television. Ever hear of the Tonight Show? Well he was the first host! Before Conan O'Brian, Leno, Carson, Parr, . AND he was hip enough to feature jazz musicians on live TV when no one else would even think of doing that. In fact, no one even thinks of doing that NOW.

  • @MarkEisenman I said that because I found (still find) him funny. I had no idea who he was (thanks for that) besides being 21, I'm not American (I'm Portuguese) so I don't know any american television from that time. I was not tryin to offend anyone, and i don't see how calling him "dude" is the slightest bit disrespecful. And yes I too wish there was more Jazz (or any kind of good Music) on television these days.

  • @MarkEisenman not true, Sonny Rollins was on Tavis Smiley's show recently.

  • thank you for this!

  • The Stephen Hawking of his day! Kinda looks like him to.

  • Great Video. I loved Steve as well!!!

  • That's wonderful. Thank you for posting. Didn't want it to end :-)

  • I keep some of the existing clips from this in a place where I can get at them easily, so I can listen to them often. The segment where Bill Evans states "...all I have to do is take care of the music..." and "...find a field in which you operate at your best capacity..." is particularly inspiring. His thoughts are so clear that they could be written out, framed, and put on the wall of my practice room! Thank you for posting the complete session - I'll be passing it on to all my students.

  • @namtil i did write them out and put them on the wall of my practice room:)

  • @taylor110ce You're a wise person! I'll be following your example. These are the kind of thoughts that you want to have front and center when you're practicing. The example of Bill Evans' focus, discipline, dedication, and insights can help any musician in their goal for improvement and deeper understanding of their world.

  • Even when he plays purposefully vague at 14: 22....sound good to me.

  • Fantastic! just what i needed for my essay!

  • they need a REALLY REALLY like button for this video.

  • Man i could listen to Bill all day long!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bill's understanding of the subconscious and the experience of improvisation is amazingly similar to Martin Heidegger's account of the worldhood of the world from Being and TIme.

    Anyone out there hear me?

  • You have done a great service to us all by putting this up here! Thank you so much!

  • FINALLY, the original. Not bits and pieces and excerpts. Thank you!

  • You're welcome!

  • @rickstolk How did you know I'd be thanking you? ;)

  • You are AWESOME for putting this up!

  • You'll never understand how grateful I am that you posted this...Thank you

  • great music...thank you!

  • Hi please tell me if anybody get English subtitle for this vodeo

I will really appreciate your help

  • thank you!!
