I hear ya. The tanking economy wasn't part of my plans, either, when I went back to school. Now that I've got my Juris Doctor, I haven't been able to find work yet. But at least now I know that, when I DO find work, I'm qualified to do some pretty decent stuff.
I hope you find something, too. And good luck with your future plans in marine biology!
Thanks for this. It was cool to hear some of your life story. I would like to see more people do their life story on video. My oldest starts college this fall, and I will let her watch this video.
I can say without a doubt that these pieces of paper do actually help, just not in the deus ex machina fashion that we are often led to believe.
It is just one more thing to put on your resume. One consideration of many. I believe a number of my jobs have hinged on that degree. However, it has by no means "led" me to success. "Success" is still mostly a product of self-marketing and luck. The more leg work we do, the more likely it is that we will find something worthwhile.
neo prometheus I was wondering how someone that came out of none other than U-C-L-A ! could find trouble looking for a job after graduation. Was it because of the major ? why dindt you choose like a more "promising" major then ?
Most majors don't usher you directly into a career. Because I didn't know what I wanted to do "when I grew up," I chose the major that was most interesting to me. English is actually a respectable major. My problem is that I simply didn't know what to do with it after I graduated. I knew how to find work, but I didn't know how to find good work. I also simply didn't know what I wanted to do. I think that was the biggest obstacle.
RndmG: My wife and I have already discussed parenthood, and we've agreed that I can't be a daddy until I'm out of school and working a real job. But on the bright side, we've discussed adoption several times, so keep your fingers crossed and you never know what could happen a couple years down the road :)
i just graduated myself. workin three jobs. and they all require tons of planning and evaluating. it's not as stressful as college (i don't have a wife or kids though), but i've never worked harder or slept less. and i am also neck-deep in debt and very poor. best of luck to you (and me). faved.
sorienor: I'm actually moved back down to Los Angeles for law school. But my gf moved down with me 2 years ago and we got married this past August... there is a good chance we may be returning to Portland eventually, but it's too soon to know for sure.
something similar is happening to me right now.
i have a CAD operator certificate but now i can`t find a job doing CAD work.
My ultimate goal is to complete my science education and get into marine biology.

I will continue to try and be optimistic.
when i find a job doing cad work i plan on using it to fuel my science education funding. Also, may not run into as many of the same issues as others.
the particular area which i am trying to become involved in " cnidarian research and taxonomy"
Is poorly understood, under studied and undermanned.

Thanks for sharing. It's nice to know that life isn't super easy for everyone and that perhaps a lot of people have the same troubles that I have.

The post-college world is a rough place. I wanted to think that piece of paper would actually help me but so far it hasn't.
