Poor Bum finally kicked that door down and found himself knee deep in shit. He looked up and saw a moon on the door. No it wasn't a carved out moon of an outhouse. It was a poster of Warren Moon the buffoon! lol
NO OTHER TEAM IN THE NFL HAS AS MUCH SPIRIT AS THE OILER HAD I STILL SAY IM A OILERS FAN WHEN ASKED WHO MY TEAM IS 1-5-7-8 THERE THE BEST FROM THE LONE STAR STATE
@SteelerNationTX That's ridiculous. The Oilers only existed for about 36 years. They were almost always bad. If the Oilers had been a very good team, they might still be in Houston.
@dolan2159 as a steelers fan i can respect the rivalry we had with houston.. to say they were a bad team is ludacris. they were solid from like up into the mid 90s. the warren moon teams had a tough division with cleveland and cincy being really good and the steelers average.
@TommyC503 Cities are built when people move for jobs. Cities die off when there are no jobs. All cities are built that way. Houston is growing like it always has. Detroit is dying off because the auto industry is moving away.
Shortly after this they ripped out the old dome scoreboard to "make room for more seats", didn't even ask the fans how we felt about it. Then we got cheated out of a championhip in Pittsburgh, then they fired Bum Phillips, then sold our team to Tennessee. It's easy to see why fans are upset but PLEASE support the Texans, remember Wade Phillips!!!!
@TakeBackAmerica2012 please stop..it was one play that was questionable... it would have tied the game in the 3rd quarter..Steelers would have find a way to win.. i would be more upset about donnie shell busting earl campbell's ribs...haha
How do u blow a 35 point lead?? at half-time!!!! My GOD it is HARD to be a football fan in Houston. "Will the lady who left her 11 kids at the astrodome PLEASE pick them up. They're beating the Oilers 28-0"
@TakeBackAmerica2012 Ummmm because there were jobs there. Are you kidding me? Just because there are jobs there - that doesnt mean people want to live in Houston.
Wow, 33 years ago? Wonder how many of these fans are dead and how many wish they were after watching the keystone kop Exans remind the city of Houston that pro football never existed in that city. lol
Houston died when this team moved. Something about the Texans that just doesn't seem real. Almost like they're a PG version of a real football team. The Oilers were the heart and soul of this city.
@SteelerNationTX OH I agree, and I just cannot get excited about the Texans. Some forget but the Oilers were doing very well before they left town. Houston was so stupid in letting that team go. Then the city turns around and builds a new stadium for a new team that want be going anywhere for a long time. Bud Adams at lease was going to put money down on a new stadium. Which was more than what the Texan owner did.
Yes, they were and my son said it best. After no longer having season tickets to the Texans, I hope they win, but just not a big fan. He said, " Of course not Dad, you grew up with the Oilers and there will never be a Pro team like that" He is right!!!! Go Blue!!!! Always.....
Take the pathetic Houston Texans, move them to San Antonio, who'd love an NFL franchise, get a gun, put it up against the head of Bud Adams, take the colors and likenesses (that Adams owned and um, eagerly gave up), find an NFL team that wants to move (Oakland?, Buffalo?), get them to move to Houston, take the colors and likenesses and re-christen the team the OILERS!
Great video and a great time to be a football fan in Houston. Point of reference for the video's poster - while the 1978 homecoming was large (estimated to be 45,000), the 1979 homecoming was even larger with an estimated 70,000. What a unique time in sports history!
I am a huge Oiler/Titan fan from Cleveland. It started in this 78 season. I really miss the dome. One of the best games ever was when the Steelers came in week 16 and Cody Carlson started and tore the Steelers up. 1990 season.
These years turned out to be the last glory days for the Oilers. It never was the same after the Luv Ya Blue days. Even in the early-90's, when the team was one of the best in the NFL, there seemed to be a dark cloud above it. From 91-93, they had the most talent, but they would do an epic choke job in the playoffs. The early-90's sucked in the NFL in general. That decade sucked until "This one's for John" and the 98 Vikings.
This is awesome and literally my earliest childhood memory. Dad followed a big black truck who had run through a chained fence to get in. He said folks were asking to pay him $20 to sit in my sisters and my seat and sit on their laps. I'm so glad someone got video. I miss my Oilers.
I was a kid when this was happening. Folks just don't understand the love the city had for the Oilers! Commish, Bud Adams, give the name back to Houston and drop the "Texans"
@GodivaGirl1 One thing that people don`t realize is the parking lot was filled, and ALL the freeways surrounding the astrodome were backed up. there were MANY more people around the dome than in it , if I remember correctly !!
If only I were NFL comish. I'd rename the Texans the Oilers, then I'd strip indy of the Colts name and give it back to the city of Baltimore. Screw Indy, they can find a new team nickname
had 2 more 1000 seasons hello no u facts , 4 straight rushing titles then u ask me then what? 4 200 yd games in 1 season that will never be broken ,, even if he didn't do anything else 4 in a row 3 straight MVP hello dorrsett good career longer, but not as great Campbell is in every top 5-6 polls for brb of all time ,
Earl Campbell averaged just 3.1 per carry in 6 playoff games. In two Afc championship games he averaged just 1.9 per carry including a 17 carry 15 yard effort vs the Steelers in 79. Hell Dorsett had 96 yards vs the Steelers in the 78 SB alone? Overrated. Both Dorsett and Smith fart on Earl "where is my triple cheeseburger?" Cambbell. lol
If I were a Houston fan I'd lobby to get the city to vote on the nickname of Texans changed to Oilers and bring back the helmet. I don't like the Oilers because the fans dislike the Cowboys but they were a part of history and that shouldn't end.
I can't imagine that happening to me. You are a huge fan of a pro sports team and all of a sudden they are no more? Man there must be a grieving process? Like a best friend died? Seriously. If the Cowboys just were no more, I'd be heartbroken. I have read on mesage boards that Oiler fans can't take to the Texans. Why didn't the new owner just name them the Oilers? Strange, I would. They were obviously loved.
I was there that night. I was 8 years old and I had never seen that many people gathered in one place in love with one team like we were with the Oilers and Bum Phillips. Bud Adams, that's another story!

The Oilers were loved in Houston. But its the fact the fans are starved for a championship. The 78 season gave them hope. The Cowboy fans in Dallas are laid back because they are spoiled rotten. I mean 33 winning seasons in 44 years of the SB era? I live in NY and the hardcore fans are on the east coast not in Dallas.

From 1960 to 1996, the oilers brought football to Houston. they won the first two AFL titles and reached the playoffs several times in their 36 years in the AFL and NFL. The Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997, but they will be remembered forever. LUV YA BLUE!!
lol the Steelers farted on you in the 79 conference championship the following season! lol Bum tried to kick the door of the outhouse and slipped on a cowturd and fell on his fat ass! lol
Thank you for posting this and conjuring up a wonderful memory for me. My sister was a Derrick Doll for two years at this and the following year's rally. I was in the stands and I felt so proud of the Oilers for fighting so hard despite the fact they were robbed of a touchdown. Thanks, again. If you have more Oiler memories to post I'd love to see them.
I was at the pep rally the following year when Bum said, "Last year, we knocked on the door, this year we beat on it. Next year we'll kick the son of a bitch down" Needless to say, that never happened, but man, I miss my Oilers.
@dallas5sb UR such the prototypical Dallas Douchebag...It's morons like you that makes me glad a steady S.E.Gulf breeze keeps you choking off our vast Petro-chem plants..
OMG I remember that day, I was 9 at the time. I cried my eyes out when the Renfroe catch was not called. Man, I was sooo sad when they left for Nashville and have not really recovered. I just can't get behind the Texans like I did the Oilers and I am only a fair weather Dallas fan. So so sad still. Oh man and all the cowboy hats LOL Urban Cowboy days wow.
Dont feel bad I wont and cant get behind the texans either and I'm just 24. I left the same comments on there last playoff game with the chiefs in 94. Forever Luv Ya Blue
It would not be 100 % fair if i didn't give props to Bethea who had a lot of sacks that year & to culp for all of has tackles. they played their hearts in that cold freezing rain without Billy White shoes & some other gem players that were hurt and got hurt during that game.
Ramblin' Earl--Billy white-shoes---Pastorini QB / Punter earlier in his career & Bingham, Kiner, Washington & Brazile. If it wasn't for that cold rainy day.---Who knows ? It could have been.
I wish The Houston Texans would have just been The Houston Oilers again. I wish the new team would have kept the name and uniforms of The Houston Oilers. Like how The Cleveland Browns moved and became The Baltimore Ravens but when Cleveland got a new team they were The Browns again.
No kidding...Bob McNair, or even the City of Houston for that matter should have sued Bud Adams for the rights to the name and logo, colors, etc... Tenn does not have the same magic that the Oilers had. The Titans would not receive the same kind of homecoming if they had done this recently. But, oh well...
I'll NEVER forget that night. Robbed of a victory the welcome home was unbelievable. We mananged to get into the dome; the seats plus stairs were full, cose to 90000 people inside the dome. 610 (Which circled the city was at a standstill with 250k cars sitting). When the buses finally came in the place exploded. NEVER have I had such a feeling then or ever. I will never forget Bum Phillips, Kenny the Snake, Mike Barber, Billie Whiteshoes and EARL CAMPBELL. May Bud Adams rot in hell!
God I miss this but as a Houstonian I will never forget Bum saying "Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team." and minus the asshole owner they always will be
@008Arron I lived in Houston, too, when the owner Bud Adams canned Bum and replaced him with some dork named Ed Biles. The team immediately went to crap. There was a bumper sticker going around town which read: "Oilers need an Adams Extract and a Biles removal."
@008Arron even though i AM a dallas cowboys fan, i will be the FIRST to say that jerry jones, ever since his plastic surgery, looks downright freakish. in the words of mary mcfly in the first back to the future movie, he looks like "darth vader from the planet vulcan."
This is truly remarkable footage. If we didn't have Youtube on the internet, I just don't know. So educational and entertaining. Bless you for this post!
Fantastic....thanks so much for posting this....I rembember being at this rally as a little kid.. Any chance you have the video of Bum Phillip's "we're gonna kick that SOB in" speech a year later?
Still love that BLU!!!!! Oilers/Titans fan till I die.

I was at the pep rally the following year when Bum said, "Last year, we knocked on the door, this year we beat on it. Next year we'll kick the son of a bitch down" Needless to say, that never happened, but man, I miss my Oilers.
obrike 2 years ago
@obrike the problem was the Oilers were knocking on a shithouse door! lol

@dallas5sb UR such the prototypical Dallas Douchebag...It's morons like you that makes me glad a steady S.E.Gulf breeze keeps you choking off our vast Petro-chem plants..

I was 6yrs old when I was there, I knew they had lost but when they came in and saw the crowd expolde... I thought they had won.
Living in Houston during the late 70's were the best a child could ask for. In school I remember we would have oiler pep rally's/
Oilers birthday parties..
and one time a young girl came dressed up as a steeler cheerleader and she started crying because her dad made her wear it.
To me Houston oilers and Star Wars (oh yeah, Saturday morning cartoons) were the BEST!!!!

dont ya think it would of been awesome if the Titans played in the Astrodome when they wore their oilers uniforms for the AFC 50th anniversary?!?!?!

It would not be 100 % fair if i didn't give props to Bethea who had a lot of sacks that year & to culp for all of has tackles. they played their hearts in that cold freezing rain without Billy White shoes & some other gem players that were hurt and got hurt during that game.
02realblue 2 years ago
Ramblin' Earl--Billy white-shoes---Pastorini QB / Punter earlier in his career & Bingham, Kiner, Washington & Brazile. If it wasn't for that cold rainy day.---Who knows ? It could have been.

I wish The Houston Texans would have just been The Houston Oilers again. I wish the new team would have kept the name and uniforms of The Houston Oilers. Like how The Cleveland Browns moved and became The Baltimore Ravens but when Cleveland got a new team they were The Browns again.
CelestialWoodway 2 years ago
No kidding...Bob McNair, or even the City of Houston for that matter should have sued Bud Adams for the rights to the name and logo, colors, etc... Tenn does not have the same magic that the Oilers had. The Titans would not receive the same kind of homecoming if they had done this recently. But, oh well...

Umm... Kenny the Snake wasn't on the team yet. I was at the rally, it was insane!

God I miss this but as a Houstonian I will never forget Bum saying "Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team." and minus the asshole owner they always will be
008Arron 2 years ago 23
@008Arron Yea you guys are more popular then the Dallas Cowboys! Have some more meth dude!!!!!!!!!!! lol
dallas5sb 1 year ago
@008Arron I lived in Houston, too, when the owner Bud Adams canned Bum and replaced him with some dork named Ed Biles. The team immediately went to crap. There was a bumper sticker going around town which read: "Oilers need an Adams Extract and a Biles removal."
WilliamRowlett 1 year ago
@008Arron Agreed. And it was that asshole owner who prevented his own team from winning it all.
rayjr62 1 year ago
@008Arron even though i AM a dallas cowboys fan, i will be the FIRST to say that jerry jones, ever since his plastic surgery, looks downright freakish. in the words of mary mcfly in the first back to the future movie, he looks like "darth vader from the planet vulcan."

This is a real classic to see and to remember the "Oilers!" Houstonians still love O.A. "Bum" Phillips, not Bud Adams!
raazada4060 2 years ago 2
Fantastic....thanks so much for posting this....I rembember being at this rally as a little kid.. Any chance you have the video of Bum Phillip's "we're gonna kick that SOB in" speech a year later?
