Originally it was because southerners were afraid that Lincoln was going to end slavery (which he had no intention to). The Union soldiers fought to gain back the South, the South defended there "right to slaves". Battle of Appomattox Courthouse ended the war. People fighting the war (well half of them anyway) had no idea what they were fighting for. The main cause of the war was slavery. It is NOT a good thing to fly the flag it is very offensive to so many people. Think about what you are doing when you fly that flag.

First of all the confederate flag is not racist, but the people who used to fly it were. We've come a long way since the Civil War and it's just not like that anymore....to some extent. If you fly the Confederate flag be proud of it but don't do or say anything stupid that make the people who fly it, because it means pride of the south, look stupid. The confederate flag is not as bad as the Nazi flag. I have a German friend and he said that Germans are ashamed of the Nazi flag. SOUTHERN PRIDE!!!

People say the flag is racist, thats bullshit.the civil war was over alot more than just slavery. fact 1 general lee didnt even own a slave but the northern generals did. fact 2 the south freed their slaves before the north. fact 3 the slaves that were freed joined the confederate army willingly and were proud to fight with us. fact 4 the us flag had more slavery under it than the confederate flag. fact 5 some black people fly the confederate flag too.

If you don't know what you are talking about don't say anything at all. The Confederate flag is a symbol of the southern army during the Civil War. The war was mainly over slavery. People fighting the war (well half of them anyway) had no idea what they were fighting for. The main cause of the war was slavery. It is NOT a good thing to fly the flag it is very offensive to so many people. Think about what you are doing when you fly that flag.

Ok I'm a 15 year old kid from Vestal, New York and I say to anybody who has taken offence to the confederat flag should take a trip to Georgia and get to know the "southern" people. @choboca7 yeah but you dont see germany still flying flags with the swastika on them on governmental buildings like you do in the south because it is associated with the mass genocide of 11 million people, just like the confederate flag shouldnt be flown because while it initially may have had positive intentions it is still associated with the relocation, enslavement, rape, murder, and general exploitation of over 20 million people

I love how everyone here calls the Dixie Flag "racist." It's pretty obvious who the ignorant people of this country are: people who don't know what the Dixie Flag means to Southerners. I'm a Southerner and have been my entire life. I would not have it any other way. I'm blessed to be born and raised in the great southern state of Tennessee. And I guarantee that not one Southerner thinks of "race" when he or she thinks about the great and untouchable Dixie Flag.

Being Southern is about more than just slavery ppl!! True its a dark part of the history...but there's alot more to being southern and being proud!! You can still be southern and not necessarily agree with that part of the history! There's a culture there that is second to none!!

Part of our history and what makes this country great, these things should be celebrated not denigrated.
