  • It's a beautiful aria no matter who sings it.

  • Good. But too much vibrato

  • i agree the vibrato is too strong... good thought :)

  • acyually its in italian, and no thats not a countertenor, she is a suprano, Cherubino is what is called a trouser role, the performer is female though the character is male, the reason for it in this case is that Cherubino is a prepubesent boy who's voice has yet to change and therefore is still high

  • Same with Peter Pan. It was always a female on Broadway, the reason being that a man's voice would be too low for a young boy's voice, even if the man was a tenor singer

  • the vibrato is too strong

  • its in duch, well, nice for her, she is singing ok

  • What language is that? French? And is that a countertenor? His resonance is impressive!

  • Never mind...duh...it's English!

  • English?? I thought it was on Italian :P

  • Cherubino is played by a female always, usually a mezzo-soprano.

  • Actually I belive the part is sung by a female SOPRANO 1, the 1st/second-to-lowest "zone" of soprano singing. I am a soprano "1.5" you might say, and my mum is an alto 1, so thay always picked her for guy singing parts (no guys wanted to sing).

  • "Voi che sapete" is one of the more difficult arias in the mezzo-soprano repertoire. A true soprano would never sing this aria in an audition--it's inappropriate (this is a generally accepted rule internationally). Although sopranos have sung the role before, it remains mostly a mezzo-soprano role.

The term "Soprano 1" is never used when referring to specific opera roles--it is a choral term. It is also the highest female part. Soprano 2 is the lower, then Alto 1 and Alto 2, respectively.

  • I think the confusion is coming from the original score. The first person to perform this role was a soprano as listed on the original playbill but in subsequent years is when it became customary to have this performed as a mezzo role. Mezzos specialized in those roles often and could perform it well so it just stuck.
