I remember these being launched in the UK in January '88, loved them, my Dad worked in a dealership and had a 1.6 GE (base model) saloon in Cherry red for a long time as a company car, loved riding in it!
I also have a 405 1988 1,6, marine blue (dark blue) just restored the engine I just can't find the choke part od the carb. It ran out on me after 8-9 years, never could find another one that fitted. Made a repaint 4 years ago cause it was all cracked up.
This car is awesome, now it runs 3 times better, lower consumption and cleaner engine. I was so happy when I got it since it was driven by my dad, then by my older sister and now I'm the proud owner.
@Grieg13 That's great!! I didn't even bother fixing the choke. I don't know how it is with weber carbs that were also installed in these cars originally, but if yours has solex like mine, it doesn't really need a choke, if you don't mind pumping the gas pedal before starting the car. I unscrolled the idle mixture a little bit and consumption didn't get higher at all. I just have to adjust it for technical exams every year. That's always a nurve wracking business :)
@Grieg13 haha! pa res! skoraj zagotovo je bil kupljen v istem salonu. No, moj je bil v Zagrebu se mi zdi. Prvi letniki so bili najboljši, še z dvema ventilatorjema :) in ponekod s pošvasanim podvozjem, ker jim je delal globoki vlek še malo problemov :)
Hi,good work, cant beat that feeling when you bring an old car back to life, ive got a 89 grd estate, shes only done 41,000 miles, great little car,an old fella owned it before me and was only clocking up around 3,000 miles a year, may post vid soon
@billy10201020 Cheers! That mileage sounds like a new car to me as mine already made 222450 in miles. You should congradulate yourself because you've bought one of the most loyal and cheep wheels on the Earth. Ok, also cute :) There could be some problems regarding rust and plastic parts and some other stuff. But as far as important things are concerned everything just kind of works. Mine still has first shocks and bearings which are regularely changed in new cars. Good luck!
damn this is so f*cking good work, i've got a peugeot 405 glx from 31-08-1992 the last one from phase 1 with a very special color the local peugeot dealer can't remember the color code and this is a buck in the rear light of my car
@rowanb8765 :D thanks. I've seen your light. Problem is with a connector. Looking faced to the back of a car it lies on the left of the light. Usually it helps if you just put it in and out few times and see if it gets better. engineering mistake lies in (-) or mass pin that is underdimensioned and after few years it oxides and starts to overheat. I welded mine directly inside of the light. Just so much if you haven't already solved this.
Man! I just wanna congratulate you! You did a great job to a great car, this is the way you love a car. If every driver was like this... enjoy this ride everyday! I truly admire your passion towards your car!! Thats the most important thing =] take care!
@crawfydude1 Manifold is stock. Carb is Solex 2x34. If your engine is out of power mind the fact that carbs need cleaning every two years (takes about two hours) and air filter replaced every year and if you want to lower consumption pull out the pipe that goes from oil pourer hatch to air filter box.
i have a 405gr and they are aint that great to be honest, steering and handling is pretty average compared to other cars of similar value. Engines are nothing great and the radiators in the gr's arent big enough. nothing looks great about them, neither sporty or luxury just a plain old boring car with everything being frustrating to work on
@crawfydude1 There are some bad stories about mine too. The cabin heater was blown (at 7000 rpm (2nd @ 105 km/h) I had to change it next winter. The Valeo cabin fan fell apart (terrible noise), i switched to Bosch. etc. However the 1988 south market has two fans and giant radiator as you can see on the film above. Handling goes together with tyres and suspension.
@annovsh My shocks are stil first with 354000km and tyres from 2001 so I couldn't valuate it due to life expectancy of a shock which is about 45000 km. It's still adequate to my driving abilities i think, very soft suspension on other side.
@annovsh Steering might be a bit hard sometimes but it looses half of it's weigth when inner wehicle slips and allmost all when you are in dangour :) ..very useful to my taste but not for every driver I agree.
congratulations man!!!go on... i've got a same peugeot 405 gl 1988 in red colour and i'm starting to restored...this video and your love to this car wipe out the message from tomicalover... yes...the european car of the year 1988 is a "poor" product....pphhff..."deutchland uber alles"....
@coran1991 cheers mate!! :) I could write some things about the Mercy e types and how the're making clovers in the snow in winter not to mention service prices etc. though very descent machinery in both cases. Good luck on your job. I find it worth of every minute spent now after 20000 km and year and a half.

i thing 405 is a poor product......wet transmission, big understeer, unrealiable engine......your cars is left behind in differential technology compare to mercedes E and C class of the same year, with not to far difference price....i think you waste money to upgrade it, better change to a mercedes e320 masterpiece of 1993-1996.......much better car despite different class..........deutchland uber alles
Congratulations! Very nice! I have a 1995 405 SRI here in Brazil. It was my dad´s car from 95 to 2007. Now its mine and I´m restauring it too. I love this car.
thanks. usually there are problems with these old carbs, even i blocked the cold start automatics, though it's a lot of fun starting it at -10deg. and puting it together used lots of silicone and gas still leaks.. good luck
beautiful! :) the paintjob looks absolutely fabulous. does this car have the 1.6 or 1.9 liter engine? i've had two GR's but neither of them looked anywhere near as good as this. =)
haha! thanks! the engine is 1.6, 92hp. you will agree, lots of fun in 1st and 2nd. Otherwise it is stock, only inhead exhausts were polished. anyway, I hope you didn't give those GRs away because of fuel consumption. It's amazing what you can achieve just by playing with egnition and carb.
I like your video !!! Congratulation !! I have the 405 GL 1.6 92 ch. If you want I have any videos of this GL !!!
