i know this was made in 06 how is the moisture holding up? i would have taken care of the walls first and for most. i see in this pictures water damage through the wall in several areas. So its been years?
@Stan92057 Actually, I started building the layout in 2003, and I haven't had any problems with moisture. As far as taking care of the walls goes, I can't. Same with the ceiling. Only improvements that I could do was add more lighting and lay the carpet on the floor. The reason for this is that I rent my townhouse and don't own it.
VERY VERY NICE !!!! I am new to all of this ....How much did all of this cost ??? So far I have bought the Heritage 2-10-2 DCC sound Loco. And Tech 6 Sound Controller and a Box of Kato Track...and Accurail rolling stock...I have a new house....and a lot of room. However I can't spen thousands of $. I want bench work like yours. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE . THANKS.
@v6n4m0d4 The benchwork is from Seivers. It's all precut and predrilled and comes with all of the screws, bolts, etc. needed. Over the several years that I've been building the layout so far, it's cost a little over $4000.
@chatanugadotorg I can definatly see how your layout cost 4000 dollars. i built an
HO garage layout thats about 20 feet long by 5 feet wide and had a simple track plan but it cost over 2000 dollars to build it all! After a while it sure does add up!
Very nice. I was thinking of Siever's for benchwork and your video sold me on it. How tall were the legs, 40 or 48"? I see you used 2 layers of foam board rather than a cookie-cutter approach. Cookie cutter scares me since I'm not real comfortable with power tools. What was your reasoning for using foam? Thanks again really enjoyed your video -- good luck and keep us posted.
@55trains The legs are 48-inches since I have to go under the layout twice to get to the washer and dryer. Plus, the higher layout surface gives a more realistic view as I'm closer to ground level with the trains. As for my using 2 layers of foam, the track is all on the same level surface, but at the west end of the yard is going to be an underpass, which will require cutting into the "ground" for that.
Well, the extruded polystyrene can be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot. The ballast, and other scenery materials, can be found online and at hobby stores that have model trains.
Nope. Using cork. Had the ready made roadbed on a roll on my last layout before relaying all of the track on cork. Never going back. Over time, that stuff on a roll caused problems, and the way I'm doing things now, I'm doing it right the first time.
sounds like you british have it hard, whatever you do, dont waste your money on those CW-80's that lionel makes, they are a load of crap, consider them a paperweight, save your money for a ZW, those babies kick ass
Amazing layout,it would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds if you wanted to attempt to build something similar as no one carries hardly any stock now,as as its now an adult toy they have quadrupled the price of everything, hundreds of pounds for one Chinese made loco, also are wages are so crap you couldnt afford to do it here, super job,Stew
only £2000,thats amazing, everything to do with model railways in this country is mega money, really mega money. The loco's are the most expensive part and the cheapest you can get are about $200,and they are Chinese rubbish, and dont last very long before the irreplaceable motors wear out on them, and then you have to buy ANOTHER one!!Thanks,StewReading you website at the mo!

Try doing a Google search for "extruded polystyrene australia". I just tried it got quite a few hits.

what sort of tips are you looking for?

Nice sound effects going along with the progress.

Thanks! Figured the sound of a train starting up would be good for showing the start of the layout.

This has given me some good ideas. IS this the Sievers (sp?) bench work. Looks like it goes together well. Thanks for the video.

Yes, it is Sievers benchwork. Goes together very easily and is very solid.

how wide are the sets of boards. how far from the wall do they go out.
twto93 3 years ago
The benchwork around the main oval is 24 inches wide. The two penninsulas are 18 inches wide.

I've been working on it a while. The trains are mostly from my old layout. The new layout has so far cost over $4,000 at my last calculations.
