  • You wonder why insurance costs are so high? Look at all of those people on BOTH tracks as the train rolls in. It's a miracle another freight train doesn't come rolling through at that time...

  • Steam on CSX? Ha, ha, that would never happen now. There was a time when CSX actually permitted steam, up until 1994 or so. Was this a special extended mileage excursion, similar to Norfolk Southern's steam excursions?

  • My grandfather Q E Martin was the US Postal service mail car senior employee for the A&WP Steam engine. 290 pulled the Southern Crescent route from Atlanta to Montgomery, AL portion and on to New Orleans. 290 was refurbished to running condition in about 1990 and ran the Atlanta circle dinner train route and to Stone Mountain also from Underground Atlanta. She sits idle now in Duluth Ga's railroad museum in a covered building. It costs too much to kep her running. 3 or 4 videos exist for her.

  • ah this brings back memories of my younger years going to Atlanta to visit my aunt and uncle there and going to ride the New Georgia Railroad I loved seeing the 290 I miss the 750 too and I see the il fated American Europian Express cars in that consist interesting ah the good old days of going to Atlanta remembering and seeing the closeing days of the Southern Railroad and early NS not to mention early CSX mixed bag of locomotives in a train LOL

  • Hopefully the Southeastern Railway Museum will restore her soon. They have plans to restore her and get 2 1/2 miles of track.

  • But this is the locomotive protagonist of the film "Green fried tomatoes"?

  • Close but not quite. The title of the movie was Fried Green Tomatoes. but yes it is the same locomotive. The difference between what you see/ hear in this video and what's in the movie is the whistle. In the movie the locomotive is "wearing" a higher pitched Southern whistle. The whistle seen/ heard here is the locomotives origional whistle.

  • ah ok, in the movie is a horn and not a whistle? Why was changed the original whistle? (Excuse my english not good)

  • 290 carried two different whistles in FGT. In the scenes that were filmed in Julliette, GA on the Norfolk Southern main, she carried the steamboat whistle from Southern Ps4 #1378. In the scenes filmed in Senoia on the Central of Georgia (namely the the scene where Buddy Threadgood gets run over and the scene in which Buddy Jr looses an arm), she carried at Central of Georgia 5-chime.

  • The Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern #3751 is James Who is enjoying Himself Enormously! What A Clever Plan? What A Clever Plan!

  • A&WP #290 Is Gordon Who's Very Cross, And So Was His Driver! Wait Until Sir Topham Hears About This!

The A&WP 290's Cab Had First Appeared!

  • Well it sounds like what I heard was for the most part correct.

If ever I do end up making it up there, would it be possable to make one of those "special requests"? 290 holds a special place in my heart seeing that she's the last running mainline steamer I ever saw run.

If you like, feel free to PM me and we can continue the conversation vial email.

    Greg

  • So what kind of condition is she in? I've heard that the cab is removed and most sheet metal is off the boiler. Is she accessable to the public or tucked away?

One weekend I'm going to make a pilgramage to Deluth. I have family in the Sharpsburg/ Newnan area and every time my family visits up there I always bring up making a day of it.

Thanks in advance for the info.

    Greg

  • You're quite welcome. I was luck enough to see this run back up from Montgomery and boy was she a beauty. I'd love to see her up & running again one day.

  • My grandfather drove this train wayyy back in the day. The 290 put my mother through Oglethorpe U

  • Thanks for posting! I was a member of the New Georgia RR locomotive crew from 1990 through 1994 and was the one who fired the 290 on the trip in this video. She is an awesome locomotive and was in great running condition at the time we made the trip. We aquired her original whistle just before the trip. We did reach speeds of 60mph on the trip as we had no speed restrictions on the CSX as we had on the NS. Glad to see 290 on YouTube finally and hearing her voice once again!

  • Thanks for posting Greg!

  • yeah 290 and the ps-4 were virtually identical with some minor differences. too bad 1401 is on permanent display though

  • Nice job Greg!

  • Nice Video.

  • As someone who lives in Atlanta I appreciate you posting this. Being born in 89 I vaguely remember the New Georgia Railroad however I did ride it once in December of 91. Sadly the Pullman facilty where they stored the equipment is in bad shape and the switch at the beginning has been cut away yet it's still nice to see 290 and the New Georgia Railroad in it's prime

  • yah that was the good ol days when the New Georgia Railroad was running I miss those days as a boy gong to my aunt and unkles house in Decater Ga and i used to bug them to go let me ride these excoursions as much I could ah the good ol days

  • That's a great whistle! Thanks for posting.

  • One of my favorites and even better that it's the engines origional whistle. The ran her with a Southern higher pitched whistle for a good portion of her time back alive. That whistle can be heard in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes where the locomotive plays a key role.

  • oh this brings back my childhood memories of going to see my aunt and unkle in Atlanta I used to bug the hell out of them to go ride the New Georgia railroad everytime I went there LOL I loved the 290 but the 750 was a great engine too I miss this excoursion train what ever happened to that old F Unit they had in the old Southern colors and the E unit I wonder I assume both steam engines are in muselms now

  • the two f units are at Stone Mountain, 290 and 750 are on display at SERM, E unit 6901 is also there and as for 6902 not sure maybe in Tennesee somewhere

  • thanks I was wondering thats cool at least they are still around running however its a shame that the two steamers are on static display they deserve to run again I miss this old excursion train..thats interesting about the E units..I was on top of the world as a kid I got to go up in the cab of 290 and ride on the wye at stone mountain..I have been around alot of steamers and still sort of feel like that little kid of old days.

  • good job hoolg
