  • I wonder if the piece of foil came from the top of an oil bottle.

  • 2 ppl r morons

  • sometimes it's more cost effective to just replace rather than rebuild.

  • Hi Brian. I got an intermittent coming from the top end of my engine. It does not start until the engine warms up. the cylinder head was replaced and the noise is still there. Could an loose bearing cause a rattle on the top of the engine even though I would expect the sound coming from the bottom of the engine?

    Thanks

  • @gcmarcal Depends on the car. What is it?

  • @briansmobile1

    Rover 75!

    watch?v=fqe76aJSk7g

  • Sweet vid! I feel like I learned a bit.

  • @t3hzavage Thanks- I'm glad!

  • how much to replace or rebuild engine? i have this exact problem

  • is this motor from a toyota camry?

  • That's a HUUUUUGE amount of play in the rod bearing. I'm really surprised that the motor didn't throw the rod.

  • @pocoapoco2 The owner really babied it- keeping it in a certain RPM range. I drove a car from central Canada to the middle of the US on a nasty rod knock. I had to listen to the engine and keep it right in around 1700 RPM. Right around there it was actually pretty quiet.

  • so you live in utah?

  • @huntfishutah I hunt and fish in Utah!

  • @briansmobile1 Hmm maybe just maybe we should hit it up!

  • @huntfishutah Sounds good to me!

  • @briansmobile1 PM me!

  • bro this vid made me understand everything thanks hell bunch that shit happend to my 84 elco and i basically said fuck it and ended up gettin towed on the highway

  • @pimpsta0078 You're welcome!

  • nice demo!

  • stressing over a loud knock that I faintly heard earlier this week, but now it is loud. under load only. it purrs nice when revving in park. It seems to be coming from under my feet on passenger side. was bit low on oil and cold started the other day. vehicle is overdue for oil change and tune up too. there is no overheating, no fluid leaks, good compression as it drives fine, no black smoke from tailpipe. could be; a catalytic converter matrix crack, exhaust leak, cracked flywheel flex-plate.

  • good vid eore!

  • @draagyn1 Well I suppose it was OK.......... that is....... if you have nothing else to do. lol

  • Good video Brian, can you do a video when you put the new motor in? I think it would be good to learn how to set a motor in and hook everything up. Thanks bro

  • my question is this. changed the water pump in my 97 blazer 4.3L.. I had to remove the tensioner pulley so i could see and reach.. long story.. anyway, i am getting ready to put the belt back on and it is now too long.. same belt that came off, all pulleys are on, belt is going around the correct way.. but it is like the belt stretched about 6-8 inches. any ideas?

  • @chuckhice The routing has changed. That happens all the time. look for a diagram either under the hood or on the web site for Autozone. That'll get that extra length tamed down.

  • @briansmobile1 I actually looked a 4th time and found my routing problem.. Thanks though. however, I do have something that I could use a second opinion on. I will post the video as a comment here.

  • don't show me that. my truck has a bit of a rod knock when its cold. i was thinking of doing the oil pan gasket because of some seepage at the back corner by the starter which is common on newer chevy trucks, but now if i take the pan off i will have to check those rods. i have been putting additives and stuff in at oil change time thats supposed to help with noise, i'm not trying to fix it like that, just prolong it enough till i can actually fix it.

  • as a mater of fact I did have a 1965 ford when I was in my twentys it through the rod and put a nice size hole in the block

  • Thanks for the video of rod knocking I was looking just for this.

  • @oxmanagain You're welcome! I'm glad I could help.

  • Nice Curley impression at :03!

  • great vid!

  • @leojhan Thank you kind sir!

  • Hey bro tanx for the upload very helpfull.

  • @chepiner You're welcome!

  • GREAT VIDEO!!

  • did you go to wyotech?

  • @CnRDirt Yes, but just to use the bathroom. I'm a mechanics son. I started when I was an ankle biter.

  • @briansmobile1 thats cool doin what ur dad did thats what i doin to. my dad a mechanic he been doin it for 42 years so i followin his foot steps good vids keep em coming

  • @briansmobile1 Lol i never went anywhere,cool u learnt from ur dad.

  • @briansmobile1 hey man i just have a question if i have long tube headers and no cats on a 05 yukon denali do i need to o2 sensor

  • @judastadeo32 If you want your check engine light to stay off. Those O2 sensors are input devices to your cars computer to make it manage fuel trim on the O2's near the engine and to test if the cats are working on the ones downstream from the cats.

  • @judastadeo32 most likely you have 4 o2 sensors the rear 2 o2 sensors after the cat you can have the ecm programed and delete the 2 after the cat but you have to keep the ones before the cat the truck is efi so the computer needs to know how the fuel has been burned. i hope i helped

  • @chevellenut1968 hey i got under the truck and changed the one on the driver side it ran a little better you think i should change the other one oh and i think the previous owner got rid of the o2 snesor after the cats thanks 4 the help

  • @judastadeo32 yes changing both of the o2 sensors is the best thing to do

  • @chevellenut1968 hey man thanks for the help i changed the other one and its workin like new

  • @judastadeo32 You're welcome- Great work!

  • @judastadeo32 thats great just happy to help

  • well thank ya

  • @cole909cole You're welcome man!

  • Thanks For This Video Bro.

  • sell the block

  • Thanks for all the informative videos, they really helped me out.

  • @MightyZarkon You're welcome buddy!

  • wallet ouch

  • Knock knock!

    Who's there?

    Rebuild time.

  • @Joohanneess lol

  • i mean rocker arm not lifter

  • coud a colapsed lifter caz knocking too

  • Nice video. Thanks!

  • @romanroman1975 You're most welcome!

  • this is the knock of death...

  • @roro560v8 For your engine I suppose you're right.

  • when you have a rod knock does it stops after the car gets warm or is it always making that noise? sorry if its an stupid question

  • @wkrfh Rod knock is a "bottom end" problem. It usually doesn't go away. Upper engine noises that happen from a lack of lubrication on start up are more likely to get oil in a delayed scenario creating clatter until they get oil pressure.

  • @briansmobile1 True. Could be piston slap too if the car has higher mileage.

  • how much u think it was cost 2 just fix da rod in a 95 crown vic 4.6?

  • @hotb5y just have to get a new motor 99/100 times

  • How long can you run a car with only 1 quart

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 Depends on the variables.

  • is this a straight 6?

  • @squeaksweeks It's a Toyota inline 4 cylinder. 1.5 liter to be specific.

  • @briansmobile1 makes a bit of sense

  • Great explanation of rod knock. Thanks!

  • great video man. cheers

  • @farley34 Thanks.

  • I reallly like your videos im a mechanic of 3 years myself but you always have new information etc for people to learn

  • @CR125MANIAC I'm glad somebody likes them. ; ) I love to teach, but spend 90% of my time by myself.

  • thanks for sharing. Good video (Y).

  • @phoxetis You're welcome. Glad to do it.

  • See folks, This is what happens when you dont keep your headlight fluid topped up....

  • @fowdalla1 Dont forget your blinker fluid

  • well my 2002 civic is knocking like crazy. does this mean I need a whole new engine? Can't I just replace the rods? I'll take it to a mechanic but I don't know much about cars and I don't want to get hosed.

  • @deanobrown if this is in fact the issue, you will be replacing the rod, all the bearings, and the crankshaft. Total that to the cost of removing and re-installing all the parts that sit above the block, and your labor cost goes through the roof. You are looking at thousands gone at the end of the day.

  • @deanobrown $2K-$3K is common. A motor swap from Japan might be a good idea for $1K-$1.5K

  • thanks for that. got one in my MINI. 5000 to put a used engine in.

  • is that a downhill bike in the background at 2:46?

  • @octalex11 No. It's a cross coutry bike. But don't tell it because I use it for down hill at the local ski resort.

  • @briansmobile1 oh what state u live in? i go dh riding in northstar tahoe i got santa cruz v-10

  • Wow man. Thanks for the video, great explanations and good presentation. It is astonishing how many posts you get from mouth breathers.

  • i got a toyota 4age 4banger, it makes little tapping sounds from under engine, when just start it up and idle it to warmup, after i drive it around and sit at idle noise is gone, what causes this, its not very loud, just noticeable.also engine is from 86 mr2, pretty old, but doesn't leak fluids, runs good, lots of power

  • @891trigfoot piston slap

  • nock nock!!

    whose there?

    rod.

    rod who?

    knocknig rod.

  • @blakegorman69 he he he ; )

  • @blakegorman69

Rod who is not opportunity and goes knock knock knock knock

  • nock nock nock nock nock!!!

  • Over revved my ej20, cylinder no. 3 spun rod bearing. Had the exact. same. symptoms. Great vid, btw!

  • @penciltrix Thanks- bummer

  • @briansmobile1 So could You Replace those Rods Because I Have A 1984 cutlass & I was Wondering Would you Be Able To Replace Those RODS or Should I Just get Another Car i think the motor Is a 307 or a 350 So It Would Really Help If you Could Give me Some Advice

  • @BosttenGeorge Those crankshafts are soft. They usually have to come out and be machined and then use oversized rod bearings.

  • @briansmobile1 So If I Get Some Over size Rod Bearings The Car Should B FIx Far as the Engine Go

  • @BosttenGeorge Nope. You have to machine the crank to accept thicker bearings.

  • @briansmobile1 Oh Ok Well I Guess ill Just have To find Me A 350 engine N have Some One Do it For Me but THANX BRIAN YOU"ve BEEN A MAJOR HELP

  • @BosttenGeorge You're welcome- good luck

  • @penciltrix my ej 20 got rod knocked twice in one month and decided to get an ej 257

  • Great vid. Thanks for sharing.

  • @badgerdave215 Ya you bet man. Thanks for commenting.

  • @briansmobile1 Nice video man

  • @racefactory900 Thanks

  • did that motor make that squeaking noise like motors do when the bearing spins? o have heard a motor squeak before when it knocked

  • @robbie1674563 Couldn't tell you I wasn't there but for the aftermath.

  • @robbie1674563 Couldn't tell you I wasn't there but for the aftermath.

  • No worries on editing your videos. I'd rather see an unedited video than none at all. Keep up the good work.

  • @Gixxerkidd1 Thanks for your insight. I really appreciate it.

  • great video cheers

  • @mustbe2easy Thanks.

  • I have the similar sound on my 2002 Mini Cooper S and when i depress my clutch it stops. Could it be this or my throwout bearing?

  • @Jaredsarusrex That's usually the clutch disc/pressure plate. That year wasn't geared low enough in 1st gear and they had real problems with airport parking lots, steep driveways, and high slope low speed areas. The following years 04 and newer corrected that. You have to pull the engine and trans out the front (take of the front bumper completely) to replace the clutch. It sounds bad, but BMW makes it come apart modularity and it's not too bad. It's pretty fun.

  • @Jaredsarusrex No a spun bearing

  • Good, insightful video.

  • @RobRage84 Thanks.

  • whats harder to take out? a flat engine, Straight Engine? Or V-engine?

  • @Sonicku Straight are usually more tight quarters making them hard to get out. Jeep 4.0 liter and Cummins come to mind.

  • @briansmobile1 any massive liter v6 or v8 reguardless of liter is hard to take out. its so big unless you own a car that came with the engine and is pre 1996 aka obd1/0 they were boats back then now not so much

  • This guy should have his own mechanics show.

  • @ladygodia Ah shucks... Thanks! You're too nice.

  • Thanks a lot big help I found the th400. I am going to post a video of it tomorrow!

  • @manmanbanana Sweet! If you get it down to Utah I wanna drive it!

  • One more question for you haha you seem to be an auto mechanic genius so do you know if a tranny off of a 69 impala that is a 350 would work for a 73 impala that is also a 350? I think the 73 is a turbo jet tranny not sure about the 69

  • @manmanbanana It depends on the type of tranny in each. You've got the TH350 multi-fit the TH350 TH400 (These will fit and were used in both those years ) and the popular Powerglide (Won't fit 73 I don't think). You can MAKE any of them fit, but you may be also replacing flex plates, kickdown cables etc etc.

  • I traded the firebird for a 73 impala that is almost mint! Now if only reverse worked....

  • @manmanbanana Open it up!

  • Alright I will do that thanks a lot for the advice bud!

  • @manmanbanana You bet.

  • Hey man cool video I have an 88 firebird having trans issues I parked it to work on and it was sitting for a week and a half, when I started it up again it had a knock all of sudden do you think its screwed or maybe it was from oil draining to one side of the pan and stirring up grit? It was parked unlevel

  • @manmanbanana Often times I'll install a wrecking yard engine and it will knock at first and then quiet down after driving a while. It's knocking because oil isn't getting where it needs to be fast enough for whatever reason. The thing to do is to not run it too long at a time or else the rod bearings can get hot and thin out leaving you with a permanent rod knock. Make sure the oil is full and get it level. Run with the oil cap off and make sure oil is getting to the top of the engine.

  • Toyota's motors suck. Honda motors are rock solid many times over. I have seen so many toyota's over the years bite the dust on their own. The only time I have seen honda's bite the dust was because the owner didn't do basic oil changes. The big difference is that honda has suffered with transmission issues for a long time with their crappy autos but the manuals are solid. Good video.

  • @egn83b Thanks. Did you know that Honda was originally just a piston ring manufacturer coming out of WWII?

  • @briansmobile1 Yea I did. Mr.Honda originally went to work for Toyota to convince them that piston rings would improve their engine design but they ignored him so he built his own designs. I know Honda was first building motorcycles and mopeds back in the day. Now they build cars and everything else. Believe it or not Honda accords and civic have motorcycle transmissions. Take a look at the design they have motorcycle clutch disc's in them that is why they fail. Too much torque and high temps.

  • @egn83b Interesting stuff. Honda transmissions are LOADED with M6 X 1.00 bolts in all kinds of helpful lengths. Tear one down and you're set for a couple bolt cans. ; )

  • @briansmobile1 I guess man. I have taken them apart their is a lot of screws in the valve body. The case has a bunch too. I have so far rebuilt a civic automatic from a 97 and 99 accord automatic aka known as the glass box online. If you really want a bunch of screws just take an accord apart piece by piece and your will have a bucket full. I know from experience. I love junk yards.

  • @egn83b "glass box" sounds scary!

  • guau man thats exactly my problem on my 92 toyota paseo 1.5 engine! I wonder if you know how hard will be to replace the rods on this type of engine?

by the way your video is very informative!

  • @Avizponverde Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I know exactly how hard it is to salvage a Toyota 1.5L whether in a Paseo or a Tercel (95-96) You have to machine the rods, crank, and everything. Many times it's best to do a motor swap if you can find a good one. I know the vehicle value isn't real high on those so machining expenses can put you over budget.

  • thanks for the great video. I put the wrong oil filter on (it popped off after 10ft, but i didn't notice), drove a mile, stalled, started up again no problem, stopped about a mile later with some rod knock (not as bad as most on youtube, but def rod knock)

If you had to GUESS, could I get away with just replacing the bearings? motor was in terrific shape before this screw up

how much would repairing this usually cost (again, a guess)

  • @dosmastr If it's a GM product probably not. Most Japanese motors you'd be OK.

  • helllllp meeeeee

  • @Chills327 Glad you liked it!

  • @briansmobile1 How did the piece of foil get in there?

  • @Welcome2SweetLife Guy was doing valve stem seals and changed the oil with some fancy foil capped oil.

  • thank you. the video was very informative. make more

  • @gpelosi1 I've got almost 300. Check'em out.

  • quick question ... can you change rod bearings if you drop the oil pan and access the bearings that way? i have a slight rod knock in my eclipse just wondering if i should do it that way.

  • @smokeytoki77 You can if you catch it early enough.

  • great video dude need an apprentice? :p

  • Wow as small of an engine that is I am surprised it lasted that long. I spun a bearing in my old truck which was a 2.5 also and it locked down tight from around 4500 to 5000. So at least he was able to drive it home. Also I doubt it was a piece of foil cause the filter would have got it. I think you may be seeing some bearing or something.

  • @NOLIMIT69NOLIMIT2000 I thought so too, but it was what it was. ?????

  • Love it!

  • Great video! What engine is that?

  • @focusonthegreen 1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5 liter

  • You da man!

  • How many miles on that beauty?

  • @PWRSTR0KER2008 106,000-- thanks again for catching that video before. The owner got a piece of foil from an oil bottle? into the engine and it blocked off flow to the first cylinder.

  • @briansmobile1 That's an expensive screw up!

  • @PWRSTR0KER2008 Kida is eigh?! It's like a 10.5 hour motor swap plus all the seals and things I did on it along with a new clutch too.

  • @briansmobile1 LoL... well, I shouldn't laugh, I feel bad for your customer (nice job for you though). Let that be a lesson... make sure you get that damn foil off before just dumping the ole oil in there!

  • roasted !
