The are concepts that are a complete mystery and beyond the comprehension of the human mind. Here we have a passage in a book entitled Genesis asserting that "In the beginning a "god" made heaven and earth," and you'd better believe it or else! As if that explains everything. What utter madness!

This mess started with Catholic Bishop Ussher. He was a scholar who was into ancient calendars and as an intellectual feat he calculated the beginning to 4004 BC. This was a radical idea in the late 1500's as most Europeans were illiterate and believed that their grandparents got drunk with Odin ;)

As for the vision theory, the author describes a day being night to morning, which I don't think has ever been considered a day in any culture. A night to morning is when most of us sleep

The history of language is fascinating stuff. I believe it would be Amun Ra to which you refer, but did you know that Pharaoh Akhenaten disbanded polytheism and established monotheism? I guess it would seem that not all Egyptians were pagans after all ;)

Actually if you re-read carefully you will notice that the author isn't mentioned as being present during the creation event so it would be rather safe to assume that the author received this revelation at a later date, perhaps over 7 nights of visions :) It says that the "evening to the morning" is a day, which would infer a vision through the night, and visions seem to be the standard method of communication to prophets throughout the Bible . . .

According to Genesis the Sun and the Moon weren't created until the 4th day of creation. Therefore the Sun and the Moon weren't used to mark the days of creation. Thus we have no idea how long a day or night was during creation. God could have taken 14 billion years to create everything for all we know. This would make sense however since science tells us that the Universe is 14 billion years old and that Evolution is a fact.

I kind of agree with the school of thought that it was a 7 day vision since it doesn't mention the scribe being present and it says the night to morning was a day, like a vision received at night. I agree 100% that Genesis 1 stands up great with the modern scientific view of creation, its a shame more people don't give it the credit it deserves. I like how it has birds on the scene before land mammals, who could've guessed birds descended from dinosaurs :)

@lizazoon well if the effect is a finite universe (evidence), the cause of this effect is what I define as God. Scientists cannot prove infinity, but we use it in mathematics and see it in bad code. You may erroneously divide by 0, but the answer is not 0. You could say the universe came from nothing, but I think everything and nothing are an inclusive paradox as if nothing exists within the subset of infinity, then nothing would cancel out the existence of all things, yet we are here :)
