i just made me a hand drill set, not sure if it will get an ember, but i will be able to practice at least, want to learn the floating technique first.
Hey mate absoltly brilliant display of skill there. You make it look so easy it is scary. Did you find that speed was the problem with the floating hand technique when you began leaning.
@andyroid99 Hey, thanks. Yes it was a problem, but it just takes time.. you need to develop muscle memory as well as your brain memory. Once the movemtn is down then it just takes a while to build up speed.
congrats my friend, this is the best hand drill i've seen by far. i've been trying to make fire lots of ways and up to this point i think this technique and the fire plunge or whatever is called. could u give me some pointers? like what wood are u using, or how much presure do you apply on the drill? anyway ur vids are great, but i'm sure u know that allready hehe.
Well, I must say that your video is not only very instructive, but also inspiring. I was never even keen on attempting hand drilling due to shortage on straight long enough sticks for the drill where I live, until your video showed me the floating technique.... I plan to try cattail on lime, got the materials, just haven't got around to it yet. Thumbs up for you!
You are bad to the bone. I keep on coming back to this video to watch again. I can do a hand drill fire...but am excited to get this method down. I will become the envy of all of my primitive living/survivalist friends when I do! Blisters here I come!
This is just amazing. If i was lost in the woods. Where I'm i going to find a board with holes and a round sticks? What type of sticks or woods to pick?
Outstanding explanation, I have been attempting to lear this technique for some time. Seeing you do it and the explanation you have given makes my expectations alot higher at accomplishing this style!! Thank you very much!!
Excellent video mate. As a survival teacher in western Canada, I've usually focussed on bow drill and flint & steel. Best 5 min explanation of floating hands I've seen.
I would sign up for a class but you are a few thousand miles from me; I will say that I've watched ALL the vid's on youtube pertaining to the craft and you are the best.
I'm starting to get it but I'll need much more practice. Got any techniques to improve my speed and keeping my downward pressure as a slide up with my hands?
Well apart from just keeping at it 30 mins every night you could try putting a small amount of douglas fir resin on your hands..very small amount though..or failing that try a little lyles golden syrup :-)
For speed just go as fast as you can until you almost collapse...30mmins every night..good luck
That is a fantastic method and a grate demonstration! I was wondering where it originates from, is it a traditional technique only recently discovered or was it developed by someone?
I recently saw your excellent vid on shortest hand-drill, where I commented I only saw this technique once elsewhere, at Tom Brown Jr.'s wilderness school. Tom claims he was instructed by a native american scout of the Lipan Apache tribe, named Stalking Wolf. That may be inconclusive, as Stalking Wolf is said to have traveled and learned a lot from other primitive peoples. Given the time-line of fire use, particularly those relying on hand-drill, I'd hazard a guess that the tech is primitive.
Your videos are excellent, and I'm very very appreciative. However, one major problem I have is recognising all the various types of wood you use. Can you suggest any good websites that will instruct me how to recognise these different types of tree or do you have any tips?

What kind of wood are you using? (wood for drill? - wood for hearth?)
Is it Yucca?
