  • I have to say, that I have never loved Max Roach. I think that he is an average drummer. Nothing more, nothing less. Good bye.

  • Great solo. Very musical unlike the heavy bashers of today. They treat drumming as a sport. How loud and how fast. Max shows how to play the drums as a musical instrument.

  • I think Roach was great. He didn't have the best chops, as evidenced by all the little stick clicking we hear and his less than perfect rolls, but he had a great musical quality to his playing.

  • Favorite drummer! such an inspiration!!!

  • looks legit.....wait, it IS legit.

  • 420 likes lol.

  • not fair.

  • Now we are talking best drummers. He in the top three best ever.Forget your rock bangers and mash so called drummers.See the wrist movement?????

  • @westluxnick

Look what Steve Smith does to it though!

Search for Steve Smith For Big Sid

  • @westluxnick He's nothing special

  • Simple and clean

  • so Obama used to play drums?

  • ta la ga du...tah! talagadutah! talagadutah! tah tu du

  • wow!

  • showoff ;-)

  • He's good. But he plays really stiff..

  • timeless

  • LOL, everyone falls for joey jordison troll comments...

  • This guy is so musical, you could almost hear melody

  • love that lick at 1:23

  • @Koolaidstraw Shut up man you don't know what you're talking about, I just put that up for a laugh. Joey's not better or worse just different but probably better at metal.

What do mean more drums than necessary? He's a metal drummer the style calls for lots of drums. Idiot.

And how do you know he can't do a solo without double bass? Have you lived with him all his life and you know without a doubt that its just absolutely impossible for him?

  • 1:13 he's doing really well for how drunk he is.

  • Its amazing to me how far we've come in drum sound and heads etc.

  • I don't know who would dislike this drum solo. That was awesome and Classic.

  • ma i tom sono scordati!!! PS: da questo solo ha ripreso anche "la drummeria"

  • unreal

  • Some of you got it , but some of you don't! Max Roach is one of only a handfull of percussionists that can actually play his own melody! He does not need to be backing a sax or a trumpet...this man is one of the best drummers that has ever lifted a stick!

If you can't see that...get your eyes checked!

  • he sure likes quadruplets

  • I discovered him yesterday listening to Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus Max Kills on the album he's awesome

  • Max has been dead for almost four years and he's still better than Travis Barker!

  • @rondolce yeah travis barker is a drummer nothing special about him

  • you know, in retrospective I find that Max Roach and Art Blakey could have the most playfull and smooth style in jazz drumming

  • @Almost0007 Ughh.. I feel a youtube fight coming..

  • @Almost0007 ahhh gotta love 12 year olds

  • @zildjian1884 Isn't that illegal?

  • @zildjian1884 Hey, lots of the time its not even 12 year olds, but bratty adults too.

I remember being twelve and hearing Roach and thinking he's much better than other music I had heard

  • @Almost0007 There's a lot more to drumming than repetitive double bass blast beats.

  • @Almost0007 if you cut of maxes arms and legs and gave them to joey i still think roach would be better

  • @Almost0007 Its easier to be ignorant than to understand and explore and finally accept

  • @w9jon That's probably the gayest statement I've ever heard. Stop trying to be smart you just sound like an idiot.

  • @Almost0007 really? well the gayest thing ive ever heard is "Joey Jordison is way better than this dude"

  • @Almost0007 I now know how serious I should take your negative comment on MY video. :)

  • And his shirt is still on

    classy.

  • obama on the drums

  • Great, I feel like I'm listening to a Prelude of Debussy, a nice blurred melody on ethereal armony, but the closing section makes me understand his definite theme. Today outside you can feel only a virtuoso display with no melody, no armony, no soul.

  • is not about speed, its about the feeling the speed gives... don´t you ever got a tune in the head on a loop and it gets louder and louder?.... that´s what he is trying to say, it´s like a tick ticky tack ton ton.... that get faster and then returns to its roots...

  • wait I love the video and all but I must ask why the fuck did he end that magnificent solo like that lol

  • does anyone else think that those high toms don't sound too great?

  • Huh?

  • amazing for his time, but by today standards not exceptional.

  • @louedawg Yeah, and today's standards are nothing, but flailing wildly on drums while the lead singer screams like a dying pig into the microphone.. These guys set the standards that modern turds are trying(failing) to accomplish.

  • @CJRaaa that depends where you get your standards. Im obviously meaning the best of today (those who set the standards of the time like max roach did then), eg. Dave Weckls, Peter Erskines, and beyond..

  • @louedawg what? roach's subtlety will always be exceptional.

  • love this guy!

  • This guy voted best jazz drummer a few times.Played with Parker. Now's the time.Great combo. Now your talking.Forget the rest he was the best

  • He's one of the first drummers to help me hear drums as a language that can be articulated. He speaks through his playing.

  • @richardkylehicks

Right on, he was extremely musical

  • why is travis barker always being bashed on every video of every drummer? i bet travis barker could play jazz just as well as this guy could play pop-punk

  • Okay solo, not really that impressive.

  • He used this solo as the soundtrack for "Death of a Prophet", about the assassination of Makcom X. Unreal how Max can tense that movie with just drums.

  • This dude is sick!!!!

  • He talks to you not at you epic!

  • Gotta love this one!

  • Beautiful!!!

  • It took me a while to respect this guy.

  • il migliore in assoluto...

  • I think Max Roach is one of those few drummers that actually plays musically.. you know?

  • max roach = barack obama

  • i think he is a really great drum player. I play the drums in school so i am a really big fan of his work. You rock Maxx

  • A revolução da época com um tema e variacões na bateria <3

  • listen to those musical "sentences" and all they have to say--one of the most musical drummers--pure genius!!

  • the snare sounds so choked...but who can complain with a player like that?

  • thats what i call taking a dump!! (drumming talk)

My favorite drummer ever, so musical

  • Great drummer. I love this guy's playing. Awesome.

  • This guy was so incredible. He played his drums like a true musician should: Musically.

  • ppl... this man, loves his drums, his playfull "ostinato" style is so AWSOME. one thing that i don't understand (being a young person) is "why the hell do other teenagers/kids think that faster is better?" it's the "groove" that matters and if you mannage to put together a lot of groove and speed and a GOOD technique then you're fucking buddy rich or max roach, just enjoy the speed, the melodic sence and the catchiness and playfulness of his drumming, RIP Max

  • @hombreg1 Couldn't agree more. Plus Max played a lot with Charlie Parker, so he definitely had speed! Check out Parker's song Bird Gets The Worm on here. The tempo is around 360 bpm and Max is playing drums on that track.

  • 1:27 to 1:34 was epic

  • If anyone says something like 'wow look how fast he goes at 1:00' or something similar; then they're missing the point of max roach

  • Forget about complexity and all that crap. This just sounds amazing!

  • woah!!

    Fckin A!

  • I love watching this great mans smile get bigger, as he progresses with the show.

  • 1:25-1:34 reminds me of papa jo jones' style

  • ok, ive watched a couple videos now of Max Roach playing drums and... he just seems like your average run of the mill drummer. Congratulations, you can play the toms? and it even sounded like he messed up at the end of that fast part lol. What exactly is good about this guy?

  • @chrisgr00ver if you have to ask (and be a dick about it), then you'll never understand.

  • @chrisgr00ver as many others have said:

look at drumming before max roach. then look at drumming after max roach.

the difference is absolutely insane. max isn't just one of the greatest drummers in terms of technique, feel, phrasing, etc - he's one of the greatest innovators and the reason modern jazz drumming (which means, to some extent, modern drumming in general) exists the way it does today.

  • @chrisgr00ver Not to be hating on you, but Max Roach was known for his complex rythms. He could make a rythm and hide it under anything he wanted and still keep perfect time. Let's see Travis Barker, Joey Jordison, hell even Neil Peart sit at a drum set, play a plain old 4/4 beat, and try to hide it. Max Roach was the most complex drummer of his time, and continues to be today.

  • @TheDustyspears Roy Haynes is another one ! The way he lays his strokes back... arg ! Just unique !

  • @wanever Yeah man, you can't beat the older guys.

The legends and the pioneers can do it better than anyone.

    Know why?

Because they fucking invented it. lol

  • @chrisgr00ver

Eventually you will learn harder rhythms and appreciate. Or not.

  • when people start saying " he/she is better then this man"

they need to remember, he was one of there insparations,

    if not there insparations insparations.

, people should appreciate things for what they are.

these are the greats. if it wernt for them drumming would have never evolved to what it is now, they invented most of the teqniques drummers use.

  • Wow man... He just looks so cool playing, like the Clint eastwood of Drums haha

  • In Europe, nobody gives a shit about Travis Barker.

  • @nordergute haha in america no one gives a shit about europe

  • @shaneoneal236 Thats sad.

  • @nordergute Nobody in America does either.

  • @nordergute

    I wanna go there!

  • @nordergute Do people in America? I sure don't.

  • @nordergute Travis who?

  • Jesus. I guess if your going to choose to be a drummer might as well get as ridiculous as fucking possible

  • He looks like a very nice guy. God song!

  • Comment removed

  • its that dry snare that gets me. he's so controlled.

  • so this is music in full artistic form... i've listened to it a buch of times and i still cant figure it... its too complex for me... i just dont get it

  • This is the only drum solo I can sing along with in the beginning =P

    It's such a cute beginning, tick-a-ta-boom-thick tick-a-ta-boom-thick tick-a-ta-boom-thick ... tom-tom

  • Kinda looked like Obama :-) What a great drummer!

  • 0:46 was a bit messy :)

  • @jamesdancer73 0:46 was messy yes,but you forgot to include all the bits from 0:00 to 2:16!

  • @peteryyz43 oh yea i forgot that bit, only joking :)

he's such a good drummer man, soooooo goodd

  • @jamesdancer73 Yeah James,he's great(i was only joking).I'm actually a Drum tutor and I use a lot of Max's independance/ostinato stuff in my lessons..he's so 'melodic'...keep listening and learning.Cheers.

  • @jamesdancer73 i thought it was organic!

  • people only say these nice things because the man is gone. put him here today, especially with videos up, and these comments would be so, so different.

  • This is the thing that a lot of young drummers don't understand. Being faster doesn't make you better, neither does having a double pedal. Being musical makes you better. This is so incredibly catchy, that factor alone makes him a better drummer than 99% of drummers today.

  • @akoolbhatt In the Pocket! a sense of musical development and a foreshadowing of melody . . .

  • I've been watching these videos of old school drummers like this guy and... its not all that great. I don't understand what people are going off about. I thought he had a nice little beat he should have held onto and experimented with for a while around 1:25 but lost it moments later.

  • wow,

    that was amazing.

  • This isnt even good.

  • @TheWorstMusicEver then you dont know what music is

  • 13 people are just jealous

  • thank you for posting , great ARTIST ! !

  • If I could do half that, I would consider myself to be an accomplished musical artist!

  • @MrCaribbeanbreeze Amen to that man he is amazing

  • lives in legacy, great example of rythmatic drumming. just not a huge fan of toms tuning

  • the man

  • If only more drummers were as musical as Max Roach.

  • To you young people.....Travis who? Sit back, close your eyes and learn a thing or 2.

  • @firstmusic00 Damn straight. Travis wouldn't be Travis without greats like Max, Buddy, Gene and Art paving the way!

  • @firstmusic00 Nice broad sweeping assumption that all young people know nothing about music and think that Travis Barker is the be all to end all drummer. I bet you wouldn't make the same comment about Carter Beauford, or Danny Carry

  • @Mightypaul Tell me where I said ALL young people worship Travis? Didn't happen. For the record, Beauford is one of my favorite drummers.

  • @firstmusic00 Sorry lol, I was up to early after a long ass night and I was a little on edge.

  • @firstmusic00 I agree with you but it is Travis whom not travis who

  • @firstmusic00 travis barker is better, sorry. not that max roach isnt great or a legend...

  • @reefdband your entitled to your opinion, but "technically" speaking, travis barker does not even come close to matching max roach on any level.

  • @reefdband You are fuckin high!! This guy studied and taught at berklee!! C'mon!!

  • @firstmusic00 can't compare man, why always comparing. why can't people just appreciate. travis is good, max is good, only an opinion can make this different.

  • @YachtClubMusic Well, I think a lot of comparisons involving Travis Barker and genuinely good drummers is because of Barker's all-permeating fan base that insist on going to every second drum video on the internet and claiming Barker's superiority. Barker is by no means a bad drummer, he plays well in context, but he is just a speck of dust on the shoulders of the people his fans insist he trumps!

It is this insistance from his fans to sompare him that inspires so much comparison from others.

  • @firstmusic00 hey man dont put all young people together. im15 and wouldnt be caught dead putting travis over any of the great drummers like max

  • @drummer9042 I wasn't...only those who worship the over-rated Barker. And I'm glad to hear there are some young people with some smarts.

  • @firstmusic00 haha thanks

  • @firstmusic00 I'm amazed people think Travis Barker is good enough to clean Max Roach's drum kit far less play it better.

  • I can't get this groove out of my head. I must have watched it 100 times in the last month.

  • He starts with a theme and performs variations on a theme. Max Roach drew tonal colors out of the drum set that others couldn't even imagine, on a par with another one of my favorites, Shelly Manne.

  • Can't deny his talent...but not really feelin this solo

  • I like Max Roach :)

  • Obama on drums!

  • @kristopher081 i thought the same xD

  • @kristopher081 I hate it when people say that. He doesn't even look like Barack Obama.

  • Un grande...così si fa cantare uno strumento!!!!!

  • great great great...I met him in the year..1980..

  • Max Roaches rhythmic drum-playing is just... awesome.

  • perfect

  • When some can be more musical and melodic on a drum kit than musicians playing melodic instruments is when your a drum great like Mr. Roach here!

  • When some can be more musical and melodic on a drum kit than musicians playing melodic instruments is when your a drum great like Mr. Roach here!

  • woah woah woah chill out man!

  • his drum kit sounds so well in tune i want it!!!

  • No!

  • Creativity beats perfectly played 64th note paradiddles every time!

One is an exercise, one is actual music.

  • Max possessed a limited musical vocabulary.

Listen to Tony Williams who surpassed Max in every conceivable percussive dimension..if you wish to hear a Jazz drummer with a musical sensibility.

    This is truly uninspired playing.

Don't check your critical faculties at the door just because Max is a bona fide legend.

    This is very sloppy execution.

  • @pooperscoopr69 No it isn't... just because (supposedly) you have musical knowledge doesn't give you the right to say what is better than another... there was absolutely nothing wrong with his rhythm or his feel... hook it up to protools, reason, logic, cubase, ableton, and figure out the rhythms. I guarantee in locked swing time he was spot on. Tony Williams is incredible in his own right, but dude... it's fucking max roach. You aren't superior, nor do you know his intentions or style.

  • Man I must be tired, around 1:20 I started thinking the video was being sped up.

  • When you hear his solos in the context of a tune he's doing with Bird it's totally amazing.

  • 6 people are racist basterds

  • Solo with musicality, not just crazy speed

  • damn obama can play the drums!

  • Amazing. What more needs to be said. Max RIP man you will never be forgotten.

  • its not about what you have. its about how you use it!

  • what's this ??.max using ludwig drums???i thought he used gretsch ?..

  • wow he looks like Barack Obama :-D

  • Rollins is an architect, Roach was a mathematician.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh MITICOOOOOOOOOOOO....LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • My favorites to play are early sixties Ludwig and while drums in general have been in plies going way back, the wood grain in laminated drums all goes the same way for tone's sake, where on the other hand plain plywood has crosshatched wood grain. In the older drums it is more accurate to call them "laminated"{ layers. Crossing the grain is a tone killer. Laminated layers on drums (with grain same way) are for weather stability. Max Roach is a genius of phrasing. What jackass called him sloppy?
