Great solo. Very musical unlike the heavy bashers of today. They treat drumming as a sport. How loud and how fast. Max shows how to play the drums as a musical instrument.
I think Roach was great. He didn't have the best chops, as evidenced by all the little stick clicking we hear and his less than perfect rolls, but he had a great musical quality to his playing.
@Koolaidstraw Shut up man you don't know what you're talking about, I just put that up for a laugh. Joey's not better or worse just different but probably better at metal.
What do mean more drums than necessary? He's a metal drummer the style calls for lots of drums. Idiot.
And how do you know he can't do a solo without double bass? Have you lived with him all his life and you know without a doubt that its just absolutely impossible for him?
Some of you got it , but some of you don't! Max Roach is one of only a handfull of percussionists that can actually play his own melody! He does not need to be backing a sax or a trumpet...this man is one of the best drummers that has ever lifted a stick!
Great, I feel like I'm listening to a Prelude of Debussy, a nice blurred melody on ethereal armony, but the closing section makes me understand his definite theme. Today outside you can feel only a virtuoso display with no melody, no armony, no soul.
is not about speed, its about the feeling the speed gives... don´t you ever got a tune in the head on a loop and it gets louder and louder?.... that´s what he is trying to say, it´s like a tick ticky tack ton ton.... that get faster and then returns to its roots...
@louedawg Yeah, and today's standards are nothing, but flailing wildly on drums while the lead singer screams like a dying pig into the microphone.. These guys set the standards that modern turds are trying(failing) to accomplish.
@CJRaaa that depends where you get your standards. Im obviously meaning the best of today (those who set the standards of the time like max roach did then), eg. Dave Weckls, Peter Erskines, and beyond..
why is travis barker always being bashed on every video of every drummer? i bet travis barker could play jazz just as well as this guy could play pop-punk
He used this solo as the soundtrack for "Death of a Prophet", about the assassination of Makcom X. Unreal how Max can tense that movie with just drums.
ppl... this man, loves his drums, his playfull "ostinato" style is so AWSOME. one thing that i don't understand (being a young person) is "why the hell do other teenagers/kids think that faster is better?" it's the "groove" that matters and if you mannage to put together a lot of groove and speed and a GOOD technique then you're fucking buddy rich or max roach, just enjoy the speed, the melodic sence and the catchiness and playfulness of his drumming, RIP Max
@hombreg1 Couldn't agree more. Plus Max played a lot with Charlie Parker, so he definitely had speed! Check out Parker's song Bird Gets The Worm on here. The tempo is around 360 bpm and Max is playing drums on that track.
ok, ive watched a couple videos now of Max Roach playing drums and... he just seems like your average run of the mill drummer. Congratulations, you can play the toms? and it even sounded like he messed up at the end of that fast part lol. What exactly is good about this guy?
look at drumming before max roach. then look at drumming after max roach.
the difference is absolutely insane. max isn't just one of the greatest drummers in terms of technique, feel, phrasing, etc - he's one of the greatest innovators and the reason modern jazz drumming (which means, to some extent, modern drumming in general) exists the way it does today.

@chrisgr00ver Not to be hating on you, but Max Roach was known for his complex rythms. He could make a rythm and hide it under anything he wanted and still keep perfect time. Let's see Travis Barker, Joey Jordison, hell even Neil Peart sit at a drum set, play a plain old 4/4 beat, and try to hide it. Max Roach was the most complex drummer of his time, and continues to be today.
so this is music in full artistic form... i've listened to it a buch of times and i still cant figure it... its too complex for me... i just dont get it
@jamesdancer73 Yeah James,he's great(i was only joking).I'm actually a Drum tutor and I use a lot of Max's independance/ostinato stuff in my lessons..he's so 'melodic'...keep listening and learning.Cheers.
people only say these nice things because the man is gone. put him here today, especially with videos up, and these comments would be so, so different.
This is the thing that a lot of young drummers don't understand. Being faster doesn't make you better, neither does having a double pedal. Being musical makes you better. This is so incredibly catchy, that factor alone makes him a better drummer than 99% of drummers today.
I've been watching these videos of old school drummers like this guy and... its not all that great. I don't understand what people are going off about. I thought he had a nice little beat he should have held onto and experimented with for a while around 1:25 but lost it moments later.
@firstmusic00 Nice broad sweeping assumption that all young people know nothing about music and think that Travis Barker is the be all to end all drummer. I bet you wouldn't make the same comment about Carter Beauford, or Danny Carry
@firstmusic00 can't compare man, why always comparing. why can't people just appreciate. travis is good, max is good, only an opinion can make this different.
@YachtClubMusic Well, I think a lot of comparisons involving Travis Barker and genuinely good drummers is because of Barker's all-permeating fan base that insist on going to every second drum video on the internet and claiming Barker's superiority. Barker is by no means a bad drummer, he plays well in context, but he is just a speck of dust on the shoulders of the people his fans insist he trumps!
It is this insistance from his fans to sompare him that inspires so much comparison from others.
He starts with a theme and performs variations on a theme. Max Roach drew tonal colors out of the drum set that others couldn't even imagine, on a par with another one of my favorites, Shelly Manne.
@pooperscoopr69 No it isn't... just because (supposedly) you have musical knowledge doesn't give you the right to say what is better than another... there was absolutely nothing wrong with his rhythm or his feel... hook it up to protools, reason, logic, cubase, ableton, and figure out the rhythms. I guarantee in locked swing time he was spot on. Tony Williams is incredible in his own right, but dude... it's fucking max roach. You aren't superior, nor do you know his intentions or style.
My favorites to play are early sixties Ludwig and while drums in general have been in plies going way back, the wood grain in laminated drums all goes the same way for tone's sake, where on the other hand plain plywood has crosshatched wood grain. In the older drums it is more accurate to call them "laminated"{ layers. Crossing the grain is a tone killer. Laminated layers on drums (with grain same way) are for weather stability. Max Roach is a genius of phrasing. What jackass called him sloppy?
I have to say, that I have never loved Max Roach. I think that he is an average drummer. Nothing more, nothing less. Good bye.
