  • Glad to find a version of Do It Again with Donald singing. Thank you! Love this whole concert. I'm making yet another playlist for it, even though there already seem to be zillions of them. It's just too good not to. I was somewhere in California then and it would have never occurred to me to go to Virginia. It's great to still be able to enjoy it now.

  • Man this is crucial.

  • Here's a good example of why they should have never of let David Palmer go. Fagen has never been a good vocalist.

I think he knew it and that is why he was so afraid to perform in front of audiences and kept the band off the touring circuit

for so long. If he would have put his desire

to be lead singer aside the band would

have been better off. Still, they did put out

a lot of great music, despite Fagens bad

    vocals.

  • This is a particularly bad vocal performance from Donald though. I generally like his vocals.

  • @SouthernManX how can you say he had bad vocals he recorded all their classic lps granted his voice is odd but so are many of our most famous singers, look at willie nelson pretty weird voice, amoung many others Dylan too.sometimes odd=different=recognition & success. he sang on key that was the important thing.

  • @SouthernManX Crikey. it's been a while since I disagreed with something as violently as this. Hard to know where to start. First, Don did the original vocals on this tune, not Palmer. But the main point is that Palmer's voice, while very good, is totally wrong for for Don and Walt were doing witht the lyrics. far too sincere. Don's voice, while technically not as good, is much the better vehicle for the irony and humour in the songs. That said, he does sound pretty ropey on this version.

  • The band's tour playing in the 2000's is much tighter and the vocals better. You can't expect every live version to sound perfect, though. No matter...great song.

  • Wow - that was the stuff! Needed someone like Frank Gambale on Guitar though, or maybe steve vai..ha ha.

Loved that version. something with edge instead of the dull studio version!

Many good bands change versions of songs around to keep things interesting. Would you go and watch a band play live when it just sounds like the album?

    Rock on!!

  • > Would you go and watch a band play > live when it just sounds like the album? Actually, that's exacty what I expect. Well, pretty much. A little variance here and there is acceptable (i.e. extending the length of a lead guitar solo, but wholesale change, no. This is why I also despise "unplugged" sessions. This is a terrible version compared to the original. This sounds like an Aja-eqsue rendition of the song; the horns just don't fit.
  • Backup singers sound off to. I don't care for this version. The other videos from this performace are not great either. Fagen and the rest must have indulged a bit too much before the show.

  • I totally agree with you very sloppy work.

  • What a lousy arrangement and Fagen is singing off key. Also, it's not tight. This had to be slightly disappointing to the audience.

  • What do you expect with live music. Its not like in the studio where they can re-mix and perfect things. Picky, picky.

  • i hate when people use that excuse. you're not saying anything new or anything that nobody already knows!!

yeah, bands in the studio always sound good, but live it should still sound GOOD. are you kidding me? THIS performance sounds good to you?! that's a joke. he's sooo off key.

nobody here is being picky. they sound awful.

  • @likekickingjesus ............................................... Was'nt making an "excuse" and in fact it does suck ( so RELAX, sheez..lol lol..)...fact is, many bands don't do a very good job when in concert. Besides we're talking about SD here....a band that's never liked going on tour anyways. Must admit they were alot better when I saw them in Chicago a few mos ago. Best Concert for me was the Doobie Bros when I saw em live bout 5yrs ago. Excellent. Even YOU woulda liked it LOL LOL :-)

  • you have a degree in music. What rubbish

  • Actually, I don't have a degree, but I have ears and I'm simply expressing what they received. The rubbish is you stating that folks must have a degree to judge the quality of the rock music they listen to. I've listened to a ton of music in my life. Been to tons of shows - jazz, blues, rock, country, classical, Zappa (he doesn't fit into any genre). I have developed standards and this doesn't meet them.

  • This is why they stayed in the studio!

    What a mess.

  • im diggin this, in my opinion the orginal was a dark sound but this sounds jazzy

  • david palmer sorry

  • the original is much better with dan palmer

  • this is more than a song...this came from out there...

  • I saw this at wembley arena in 1996 when i was ten, awesome concert!

  • I love this -- and I also was there! Thanks!

  • Bty the way, I saw this concert in Manassas , Va. It was Great. The acoustics At the Nissan Pavillion were pretty good for an amphiteather.

  • the steelys rule

  • Not live sounds better!

  • also known as studio

  • As I understand it...this group never toured in there so called "hey day" ? they were just pretty much studio musicians? can someone clear that up?

  • For the most part yes, you are right. The story goes they didnt have "the look" that was popular in the early 70's. They were a band that crossed lines between rock, jazz and funk. They originally had members who would eventually leave to join the Doobie Brothers (Jeff Baxter and Cornelius Bumpus).

The core of SD has always been Walter and Donald. They've done the studio thing surrounding themselves with top notch studio musicians. There you have the story of SD in a nut shell.

  • thank you very much...just one a bet!

  • Why oh why did they get rid of Dias?!?!

  • indeed i cant find hardly anything about him! one thing is for sure, he tore this track to pieces live, and in the studio!

  • I saw them in concert at the San Diego sports arena about 1976 (in their heyday), they split the bill with Jefferson Starship and, IIRC, Wishbone Ash. That remains the absolute best live performance I ever heard by any band.

  • More likely, you saw them in '74, since that was the last year they toured during that decade.

  • You're probably right about it being 74, I was stationed in San Diego betwee 73 and 76 so it was sometime during that period. What a concert!

  • GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

  • GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

  • I love this one

  • oh shit...a keytar

  • What was Donald thinking? Those weren't even cool in the 80's when they came out.

Lately he has some clarinet keyboard looking thing. I don't know the name of it.

  • it's called a melodica and keytars rock!

  • Oh wow! This is so wonderful! I've seen them in concerts the past five times they've come to my part of town and I really wish I had been older when this concert came around so I could have appreciated it better. (I was around 8) This is just beautiful picture/sound quality. Thanks for posting this!-Megan
