its not gypsy language his accompllished sing russian but not YUL ,im gypsy and thats not gypsy language sorry to here that i would love to hear the gypsy language from YUL
Who knew he could sing and play so well. Too bad hollywood did not use these talents of his in a movie. He was a amazing man - thanks so much for the video.
Great actor, great man and this video is terrific, i own the record, got it on ebay for an obscene amount of money - but still I am glad I have it...love the man!
Стоит только поискать в youtube , The end of the road, Yul Brinner

I saw his only movie - The Magnificent Seven - and I already consider him to be one of the greatest male actors of all times. He has a style of his own.
Yul's hairless head really helped him stand out amongst the other male stars of the 50's & 60's. But I don't think he was actually bald. I think he just had a HIGH forehead. They say that ladies would squeeze his head to see if it was ripe when he walked down the produce aisle in the supermarket. And how did he know when to stop when washing his face in the morning! Oh well...you know what they say about baldness: HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW !!!
Russian traditional style. Yul is a russian and was born in Russia. He is singing with a very popular russian gipsy singer Alyosha Dimitrievich who lived in Paris.
I have looked all over for 'The Gypsy and I'. Evidently it isn't available in the U.S. Vanguard has even given the number away. (VSD 79269). But it is available on DVD in Russia where Yul Brynner continues to be very popular. Unfortunately it is a DVD format that won't play on American DVD players.
DANG!
Who dreamed that a popular movie star could sing like this? And be so sexy at the same time?
This is a great musical performance by an accomplished artist of many genres and schools....I loved Yule in his classic films and to add his playing ability to the palette is a real treat....RIP Yule.
dixie 998...I remember seeing an LP of him playing a 7 string guitar and singing Gyspy songs about 40 years ago.. count the # of strings on this guitar. Anyway, he did cut at least one record. I think one of his sons cut a record too. Good luck finding one.
I didn't know he played guitar, singing, yes course he sang in The King and I, he was a wonderful actor, and i had the chance to met him in London, special person, very human and simple!
no, he did not. you just have no sense and no taste, that's all. it is not "Театр Ромэн" or contemporary Russian пошлятина from Brighton Beach, that's why you don't get it. too bad for you.
Here, Yul with Aliosha Dimitrievitch. Aliasha is his friend fron his childhood. thay met when yul at 12 and Aliasha at 18 in Paris. they sang together in gipsy style in Paris. they have an album called Gipsy and I. Aliosha is an gipsy.
Yul in fact was born in Vladivostok to a Russian mother and a Swiss father who was 1/16 Mongolian so he was not a Ukranian Gypsy. He however considered himself to be a gypsy and gypsies accepted him as one of theirs. This song is a Russian Romance with no known author, however many authors have later contributed their variations of this classic.
Venik, I am deeply insulted. I do not smoke, crack. I do smoke tobacco. So did Uncle Yul. He was my mother's brother. If you're Ukrainian, listen to the word's, closely. I remember when Uncle Yul and my father would drink, and sing the old songs. That was years ago. I'm 54 today. I still call him "Uncle Yul". Maybe you know him better than I do????=Stefan=
Suppose you´re referring two the version found on the LP "The gypsy and I" (1967). It´s a very touching recording he did together with Aloshia Dimitriewitch and Serge Camps.
oops, too fast. Can anyone confirm the following: in the movie "Anastasia" with Ingrid Bergman there is a scene in a Russian restaurant. The 'orchestra'playing there seems to me the family Dimitreyvich with Aljosha. ANYONE..?
Yes. From Rock Brynner's book Empire and Odyssey, page 185. "One night that summer I stayed up late to meet the Dimitrievitch family at the club where they sang. Aloisha and his family had only recently returned to Paris from Argentina, where they had fled the Nazi Occupation. For Anastasia, Yul hired the Gypsy family who had adopted him to appear in the nightclub scenes, modeled after one of the actual clubs where Yul had performed with them."
i often wonder what happened to Yul's guitar after he died--I know his last wife has it and was a bitch about giving it to Rock his son--but wish i knew!!
This is from the Ed Sullivan show in 1967 - I saw it the other week on "The Best of Ed Sullivan", a recurring show featuring clips of various acts throughout the years. The original episode aired September 17, 1967 (ep. number 927, season 21). This is also the famous episode that got the Doors banned from the show afterwards for using the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher" in the song "Light My Fire."
Sorry, I don't have anything else with Yul singing. I fond this old footage on an old tape (in Beta!), this extract was in a variety show, it's all what I know. I was for throw out all my Beta collecton and I had the good idea to check it before... I am very interested to have music of Yul and Aliosha, if someone can tell me something at this subject. Tnx a lot.
Wow! Where the hell did you get this footage from? Are there any other songs? Okonchen Poot? Is there any possibility to get a burned copy of their cd from anyone? I would pay via paypal...Let me know please..
Thank-you so much for this exceptional document! My mother's family is related to the Dimitrievitch family, and to see Alyosha Dimitrievitch singing with Yul Brynner is a most significant treat for me. :)
Hi Yashband, It´s OK, and thanks to explain about the language, but is just that in the Rock's Brynner book "Empire and Odyssey", says that Yul sang in tsigani with Aliosha, you can check in the web site from Rock, that includes the song "Okonchen Poot" with the same explanation, you are very lucky having that record. So please, upload songs of that, there are a lot of Yul's fans, like me, that will appreciate you it very much.
Sorry, but i know this song very well, its "dve guitari" in russian. I have the full album from Yul and Aliosha, all songs are in russian. I have also songs from Aliosha in russian rom language.
he was a sexy charismatic mofo in all his FILMs HE commanded attention, watch Anatasia, Taras Buba, who fucken cares about his height he had what many didn't, class, mystery an a machismo about him..his personal lifes speculation is irrelivant..he was a talented actor.

The loosely translated lyrics are below (they won't all fit here)
Two guitars behind the wall
began playing mournfully,
oh my heart, a familiar tune.
Darling, are you there? Once again, one more time, and still many, many times, once again, one more time, and still many, many times.
Wind, a field, and corn-flowers,
and a long, long road...
My heart is longing and yearning,
my soul is in despair.

I'd say that if he considered himself to be a gypsy and gypsies accepted him as one of theirs, then he's a gypsy.
He's identified himeself as one of them and they've accepted him. That makes it legitimate.

It was his grandfather who was Swiss.

@tiger50011 It's legend - Yul was born in Sakhalin. His 1/2 Swiss father was not have Mongolians blood - only Swiss and Russian

No, it is not a Russian balad. It is a Ukrainian balad. Mr. Brynner was a Ukrainian Gypsy. And he spoke our language, quite fluently. =Stefan=

LOL, Ukraine ballad - give me a brake, and the language is also Ukrainins, right?
vulgarisopinio 3 years ago 5
Put down the crack pipe. This music is not Ukrainian, the language is not Ukrainian, and Brynner sure as hell wasn't Ukrainian. I am though :)

Yul was born in Vladivostok. He wasn't Ukrainian. The gentleman accompanying him is more than likely Aliosha Dimitrievitch, his partner in music.
macbeerhunter 3 years ago
It's Aliosha Dimitrievitch, no doubt....

Indeed, who else? They were very close friends.

Yul Brynner never was a singer. never even aspired to be a singer!
sfndl 3 years ago
WRONG!! Yul Brynner was an accomplished guitarist and singer. He sang in clubs in france for quite some time and recorded records.

Suppose you´re referring two the version found on the LP "The gypsy and I" (1967). It´s a very touching recording he did together with Aloshia Dimitriewitch and Serge Camps.

Thank you for putting this up.
It's one of my favourite songs. And I love the way they both are just so concentrated on 'speaking' to each other.

Russian passion teaming up with Latin passion - very good.

Thanks for posting! Yul was such a great talent; a true "man" of films; not an overgown boy (like today's young men). Really enjoyed this clip.

oops, too fast. Can anyone confirm the following: in the movie "Anastasia" with Ingrid Bergman there is a scene in a Russian restaurant. The 'orchestra'playing there seems to me the family Dimitreyvich with Aljosha. ANYONE..?
k6l11h58 4 years ago
... or is it the family Romanov ;-)
RuleBritannnia 4 years ago

Tis cannot be 1967. In the video Brynner is much older and olready very ill :(

Tnx a lot.
