You have to get to Ronnie James Dio-era Sabbath before you even consider the "horns". Then you have to realize what it really means to the Italians, of which Dio is descended.

@camarotoro Gene's was Spiderman-inspired because it includes the thumb and we all know how much he loves comics.
Dio's devil horns however are actually based on the gesture his italian grandmother did to keep evil spirits away: the satanic devil's horn.
