Why it is called "Famicom" you might ask? Well, Japanese people like taking the first parts of multi-word names and merge them together to create one small word. For example, when Pokemon came out in Japan, it was called "Pocket Monsters", but several Japanese people referred to it as "Pokemon". Other examples are Street Fighter II as "Street II", Digital Monsters as "Digimon" and Super Mario Bros. 2 as "SuMari 2".
