This tune made me start listening the FSOL music more than 10 years ago, and even after listening to it countless number of times I just cannot stop but to think
Loads of technical talk... cool. But I simply love that this track is underscored with a looped vocal sample and the percussion is written over the top as a 'tune'. I think that's cute, and it sounds reallly neat. This is the version from the Far Out Son of Lung single/EP, btw.
Hey everybody - I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs heavily inspired by The Future Sound of London. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
From Bach to this....the process of creation is rarely so intentional, it just happens. Bach didn't write a book a music theory.....he wrote music that the theorists theorize about instead of writing music. Electronic music is so intuitive and aurally complex that actually bothering to think about triplets and eighth notes is utterly spurious and left to those who think about such things instead of writing music.
@MarquisEstelle Let me tell you my friend,in few words: FSOL compose and create music, because we had that blessed by talent musician namedJ.S Bach! I am also more than sure Johannes could use electronics if he had a chance.and actually Bach wrote many pages about theory and put music and harmony on higher level!!! RESPECT!
Nice idea but the division is of mind. You practice and learn with one side of your brain, then create with the other. Being able to feel what you play and play what you feel only comes from being technically good enough to not have to think about what ever it is your hands are doing. Then your creative brain can take over. You have to be a student and theorist, and then let go and trust in what you know. A sampler is an instrument too you know.
@TechnoFiasco I agree with you tacity, but the whole right brain/left brain never falls so easily to hand as you have put it here and I personally do not think about it in anything as explicit as what you outline. What you call 'letting go" I call musical intuition. And yes, there most assuredly is a threshold of formality that must be present in order to make any meaningful musical gesture worth anything.
does anyone know a trance song with helicopters in the video....ihad so much fun when it came on the telly that i didnt take notice of the name each time.....please help me....best dance tune ive ever heard ive been lookin for it for about a year now
it is like 1ea3ea3ea4ea but the dotted 8th 16th notes make it 1a2a3a4a almost like shuffle groove it is triplets underneath the straight 8th notes makes it bounce a lot.
what makes this song so good is the alternate in volume levels of the 16th notes on the hi hats and the alternate volume levels of the bass drum. Typically those volumes are even and level but this mix uses higher and lower levels in both hi hats and bass drum beats. Which makes it very strong indeed.
also the triplet format doesnt hurt this beat either it wants to have that triplet feel but it just doesn't quite make it, it is bordering on triplets wich gives the bouncy feel to it. It is like a half in half out feel instead of just solid straight 8th notes they kind of jazz it up a bit with that bouncy triplet feeling almost. Which comes from dotted 8th sixteenth notes which in reality are realy triplets underneath, it is hard to explain.
Somehow I don't think Brian and Garry consciously think about these music theory concepts. I think they just compose these tracks entirely by ear and are just that good.
I just bought this album and have been listening to it all weekend and the more i listen the more i discover ..

@MarquisEstelle Music theory is for conversative pricks. Music is something that cannot be described in words, to do so is just someone's opinion.
