In the late 40's my Grandfather took me to the big toy store in Des Moines so I could chose my Christmas Gift. I could choose between the American Flyer and Lionel. Well, I knew trains run on one track, not three and the Lionel trains were fat and not at all to scale. So I chose the American Flyer. Being more expensive I got less traain set for the dollar, but over the next few years my Grandfather added to my train set. Lionel has come a long way since the 40's, but I still love my Flyers.
If you care to see my American Flyer go to choochoo3985 and watch my American Flyer. Original and still prototypical.

@choochoo3985 True! American Flyer did look more realistic back in those days. I'm not sure why Lionel ever went with that bulky look?
