Mario Lemieux had what I consider, one of the most underrated performance in sports history:
1993 Mario had the best start of his career and was on his way of breaking Wayne Gretzky's single season record for goals and points but then was diagnosed with hodgkins cancer, left the game for two months to have radiation therapy, only to come back and win the scoring title! By the way these are the top 2 goals per game leaders career ;
Lemieux remains the only person other than Gretzky to approach the 200 point plateau, scoring 199 points. Gretzky surpassed the 200 point mark four times in five years during the 1980s
Lemieux is the king, training his prince Crosby, but Gretzky is God
Awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the League's Most Valuable Player
Highest point total by a first year player in NHL history, 137 points
Second season The Young Man
Won the Art Ross with a then-record 164 points, breaking both Bobby Orr's record for assists in a season (102) and Phil Esposito's record for points in a season (152).
Won his second straight Hart Trophy
81 playoffs, single game playoff record, Gretzky had five assists
17-year-old Gretzky scored his first professional goal against Dave Dryden of the Edmonton Oilers
1979 WHA All-Star Game, Gretzky on a line with his boyhood idol Gordie Howe and his son, Mark Howe
Gretzky's 18th birthday signed a 10-year personal services contract (the longest in hockey history at the time) worth C$3 million, with options for 10 more years. Gretzky finished third in the league in scoring at 110 points
Captured the Lou Kaplan Trophy as the last rookie of the year, WHA
Age of ten he had scored 378 goals and 139 assists in just one season with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers
His play attracted considerable negative attention from other players' parents, including those of his teammates, and he was often booed.
At 16, in his single year at the major junior level, Gretzky surpassed the OMJHL single-season scoring record, winning the OMJHL Rookie of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike awards.
@superjeff299 lol what are you smoking? He wasn't on pace for 3400 goals, he'd have to play like 4,000 games maybe more on his pace if he kept producing like he was (older you get, worse you get) so no, he wasn't lol...
Do you really think you're going to change someones mind on who the greatest is? I dont need to argue with some idiot kid whos daddy told him "So & So" was the best.
For me there is nobody better than Mario & I dont need someone to agree with me to make what I saw that man do live on the ice anymore real or satisfying. The things I witnessed Mario Lemieux do where some of the most magical moments I ever experienced.
Enjoy the memories you shouldn't need others approval for those to feel good.
@LucaToni101 r u kiddin me? Didn't Peters have a really long unbeatable record for consecutive games with no losses almost erasing the old record? He was good and so was Lemieux!
Shut the hell up eberle's was better LOL??? How many chances did he get before he scored? I know how many Lemieux needed 1. Eberle needs a few games before he scored. Lemieux just said...i want to touch the puck once and ill score. That is why your comment is stupid and lemieuxs goal shits over Eberle's
'Lemieux just said...i want to touch the puck once and ill score', and then he said 'I don't want to score for the next seven games' and that's what he did.
sidDKid87- One fact says Gretzky WAS WAY BETTER than everyone else. He has more assists than anyone else has points. Add his goals in and he beats everyone else by a longshot. SIXTY TWO SCORING RECORDS! ENOUGH SAID.
@DDon670 All you have to do is look at how many games/seasons Lemieux missed due to health. The guy made Warren Young a 40 goal scorer and Rob Brown a 100 point man. And Gretzky played more seasons, including his prime, through the 80s compared to Mario playing his prime through the clutch and grab 90s and into the 2000s when he made his comeback. Had Mario been healthy though, his numbers are even better than what they are now and theyre already comparable to Gretzky's.
He was better than Gretzky. Gretzky was healthy and had better teams, and Mario still had a higher points per game average and goals per game average after his first retirement.
@razorslice17 Im not gonna argue that. Tough to say who's better though really. But ya Mario, if he was healthy and had more around him in his earlier years, jeez, who knows.
Gretzky as a 1.92 ppg average, Lemieux is close second at 1.88... but he was much more physically implicated in the games... so both point of view are valid I think
Though Lemieux as a higher average for Goals per game, Gretzky having WAY more assists... as for their Shoot%.... roughly the same, like 1% more for Lemieux I believe...
thats fucking sick to score on your first game first shitft , first shot and to score on his last shot and on his last game and last shift well on his first retirement anyway

@ncbeast18 lemeiux was better than gretzky from a physical skill standpoint, but from a mental standpoint, gretzky was and most likely always will be the best.
@ncbeast18 Lemieux was better rounded. Like comparing Ovy to Crosby. Ovy is just a goal scoring machine, give him the puck and he can do amazing things. Crosby can do the same, but he makes an awful lot of plays happen with other players so he spreads his points out a lot. I feel Lemieux was better. If you're going off of statistics then sure, everyone sees Gretzky as the 'better' player. Lemieux didn't play near as many games as Gretzky?
@ncbeast18 100% agreed. Lemieux played maybe a total of 10 seasons worth of games and was still very close to Gretsky whom played 20 seasons. Yet people try to tell me Wayne was better because of his records....psh.
@ncbeast18 Lemiuex was better than Gretzky, Even Gretzky says so. He said in an interview that Lemiuex could do everything he could do and was 6'6. The only player better skilled than Lemiuex ever was Bobby Orr.
First of all, get a life... "Nubcake" would mean you play those online games for most of your life. It WAS his first goal.. and he was the first to score in the league that season... " -.- " as you'd say.
