This is at least lampshaded. And yes, Cranky has a point: it was a setup for DKC2. Although killing K. Rool would violate a no-killing code. (Of course, it's unknown if a no-killing code has any focus on it in the DK games.)

The Virtual Console version is the Super NES version, so it has the original ending, not this ending.
