  • The piano part itself is not a simple feat so i was blown away seeing this transcribed credibly for guitar. I wonder if Fagen and Becker have seen this. If not, they really should. Any major artist with half a heart surely would want to, my friend.

  • This is fantastic, I keep coming back to this, prefer it to the original which is incredible because Steely Dan are one of those perfect bands but this goes beyond perfection.

  • Truly excellent, to cover Steely Dan so well amazes me!

  • Awesome ! I never thought that could be transposed to guitar and maintain much of the keyboard nuances.

Great work. If I was better adept I'd ask for the cords. Maybe you could send me anyway.

  • Very good! :]

  • I post about three comments a decade on here, so if I write, you really got me. I love the tune, so I was leaning your way from the first chord, but here's the thing that you've really managed: to convey respect for the piece. I don't have your chops or that much to contribute, but in my wildest fantasies I hope that someone hears my efforts and thinks: that guy loves that tune and is totally synched with the original artist. That's what I hear here...all the best; keep posting.

    Don

  • @DonClardy65

thanks, Don. I really appreciate it.

  • Nice man. One of my favorite steely dan tunes.

  • you have a beautiful voice

  • This is phenomenal! My favourite Steely Dan song. Please do a tutorial video for us beginner/intermediate guitar enthusiasts. Pretty please!

  • Allright. You nailed that one. If you put more Dan on here I just might piss my pants.

  • @theivory1

ahem, well we wouldn't want that to happen! thanks.

  • beautiful!!! might be my new favorite!!

  • @borninreverse

    thanks!

  • It blown my mind men.

It's a song i'd never imagine that could be covered like this.

    my respects.

    Keep up!

  • Youre fucking awesome o.Ô.....=)

  • wow really good

  • @julymozart

    thanks

  • Great playing ..... super vocals ! Brilliant !

  • Who are the douchenozzles they come here just to vote dislike.Especially a piece like this. I see this all over You Tube.

Brilliant guitar. Like all maestro's you make it look easy when its no such thing. I especially like the little break at the end. Besides its my favorite Dan song.

    Thanks man.

  • @PlymouthVT

thanks, Plymouth. Or should I call you Calvin? Nice town. Beautiful part of my native state. cheers.

  • and he sings too!! nice job TC, love Steely Dan, got into them by accident when a friend bought me an album of theirs (i forget which one) not knowing at the time I was actually into Steeleye Span. An easy mistake to make I guess but a fortunate one none the less

  • Troubleclef, you're a gun mate. one of the best youtube guitarists, period.

  • My favorite group...sophisticated, melodic, and complicated, not to mention unique......in a class of their own...and you do them better than anyone...can't imagine tackling them solo...please do more!!

  • @airbus3006

    thanks!

  • @airbus3006 Say Trebleclef, if you don't mind my asking, what model Taylor are you playing for this song? I recently bought a Taylor NS 24 and am very happy w/ it, even though it was made in Mexico...I couldn't tell what type of wood yours was made of, or if it's an American model...thanx, Bob

  • @airbus3006

it's a 54. believe it's a cedar top. not sure about the other woods though i read them somewhere on the web at one point.

  • That was nice. Seems like everything you do on the guitar is wonderful. And the vocals work well and sound great.

  • Nice work! Great into and the sound quality is excellent!

  • Amazing playing, nice voice, really great music taste. Who could ask for more?

  • one of my fav steely dan albums,songs...beautifully done!

  • Excellent!

  • Very very very nice. I like Steely Dan's music but I never really tried to play it. This is very inspiring (although I'd never reach your level). Much kudos. Appreciate you played this and uploaded. Thx.

  • Nice! This is the first one I've heard you sing.

  • @kernalkorn

there's some older clips when i used to sing. in fact the other SD clip I did (the fez) has vocals (such as they are) as well.

    thanks

  • I don't even like steely dan, but i liked that.

  • @digitaldown

    thanks!

  • Brilliant arrangement and performance, as always, Mr. Trouble Clef. And the vocals worked!

  • A fellow Mac user and Dan fan. Nice.

  • would you consider doing a version of "only a fool would say that"?

  • @hutz13

it's conceivable. there are other things on that record or other SD records i'd do first probably, but it's not out of the question. thanks.

  • @troubleclef no problem ... it's likely not as complex a song as most of the ones you tackle, any SD songs are much appreciated in any event.

  • would you do a version "of only a fool would say that" sometime?

  • Very cool!! Nicely done and great to see you post again!

  • @unclealbert72

    thanks, man

  • Brave choice, but works pretty well in stripped back form. Tasty intro work especially !

    Cheers,Jim

  • love THE DAN- nice job T

  • @mrsullyrox

thanks, buddy. Nice job on that Neil Young tune you did recently, btw. "round and round", love that song.

  • I take it that's a new microphone...Very nice. What is it?

  • @BennyBlanc0FTB

nope. same old AT3035 used in the last year or so of clips.

  • I liked it very much. Caught me by surprise. I will watch it and see if I can learn it. Looks like a hybrid Taylor nylon. Thanks

  • @SiggyMe

yup. NS54-ce. love of my life. :D

  • @troubleclef I hear ya, if I find one used it might end up in my hands.

  • Nicely done!

  • That's a great post Tony, thanks - and that's a well thought-out, musically aware accompaniment, I'd expect nothing less. And the singing was good. All-round brilliance, what else can I say?!

  • @ironmonger100

    thanks, buddy

  • Very good, I like your interpretation (voice and guitar) !

    All the best

    Daniel

  • Great stuff!

  • Great singing and playing!

    Greetings from Germany

    Werner

  • @KasugaD400

well, not sure about "great" singing. but I appreciate it all the same! :D

  • Great to hear this Tony. Now that you did it, I might sing on my next video... or maybe not... And the recording quality is amazing.

Never knew the tune before but that is because I am so 'classic' educated. Sorry :-)

    2 Thumbs up!

    Per

  • @AndanteLargo

You should definitely check out the Dan. They have some remarkable stuff. Thanks so much, Peo. cheers.

  • Wow!! Fantastic job!

  • good voice to, full of surprises =) as the guy below a few said, you seem to know what you can do with your voice

  • You're not the best singer in the world, but it's all right.

You seem to know what you can and can't with your voice.

    Thumbs up! :)

  • @specthanatos

yeah, can't sing worth a damn. but like i said in the video details this one just seemed to need more than just instrument. I was going to do a "karaoke" version (all the instrument parts but not trying to also play the melody).

But I kinda like the words too. So I trotted out the voice! :D

  • A great tune, with beautiful chord voicing (as we all know from the Dan),very nice how you're introducing your voice with this tune, great. Saludos Vic.

  • @Jazzguts

thanks Vic. i did post several vocal clips years back but i've removed many of them. yeah, the chords in this are crazy on guitar! all those add9th's

  • OMG YOU SINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG AND YOUR VOICE IS AWESOME

can you sing in portuguese? I'd love to listen to something from clube da esquina? pleaaaase por favor. abraços

  • @keixoun

i've got a couple of vocals of brazilian things up already for years. "corcovado' and 'pra dizer adeus' are still up. there were others but i've deleted a lot of the vocals i did.

    thanks.

  • Awesome! never came to thought of you singing, but hey, do some more-it was great

  • @mitchskater

    thanks Mitch

  • very nice! Thanks for sharing this!

  • You've got a great ear--beautiful job!

  • I love that first album... Beautifully done.

  • nice one

  • It's very nice and Donald Fagen a great songwriter.

    Amitiés

    Olivier

  • @reiviloguitare

thanks. yes, he's a master songwriter.

  • Excellent

  • Awesome Tony!

One track? guitar and voice toghether?

  • Your Taylor sounds fantastic under your fingers! Great singing & playing!

  • @amccann7

Thanks so much, Amy, for all the comments indeed.

  • wow - I always looked around me left and riht while listening... great stereo-effect! :)

  • Respond to this video...

    thanks!

  • Sounds like you used adt, sounds really good

  • Fantastic, and nice to hear you singing now too! :-)

  • bravo!!! parabens muito bom!!!

  • so great, Tony. Looking forward to more Steely. I agree re Brooklyn and Heartbeat.

  • @sarabullard

I did another one quite a while ago. look for 'the fez'. thanks, Sara!

  • very cool man, sounds real good, one of my favs

  • Simply great, Tony!

Fine recording sound too, very intimate, just like sitting beside you!

    More of it!

    Cheers,

    Bernd

  • Very nice! I look forward to more! You have been inspiring me in my own play! Thanks!

  • @smokinpoolshark420

    glad to hear it. thanks

  • your voice is very much enjoyable indeed. Your guitar playing sucks, so it compensates...lol:; just kidding , of course :-D

Have a great day and thanks for this.

    P.

  • @Qpidon

    heheh, funny man. thanks, buddy

  • Excellent!

    Martin

  • Great! you have an amazing mic - it sounded like your in the room!

  • You never cease to amaze me! The Dan is my 2nd favorite band. I've been hacking away at Deacon Blues for a while now, but I can never get past the second bridge. You've got the entire band in your hands here, and VOCALS? Yeah... very cool.

Would you ever consider taking requests? If so, try Deacon Blues so I can study your fingerings. Thanks for posting! ~Jon

  • @FlyingHorseKnuckles

    and your favorite band?

I think i noodled with Deacon Blues once. Everything on Aja is so *hard* to play. A challenge indeed. Keep trying. Maybe i'll take another look.

  • @troubleclef That would be the Beatles, if for nothing more than shear output over the years. We both noodled. I made spaghetti, you probably made fettuccini Alfredo with lobster! Thanks ~Jon

  • Now you're singing too?! Darn, is there anything you can't do?!

    Great job!

One day, I aspire to play the guitar as well as you.

  • @ssbaum

    I can't swim. :D

but, heck, i can't sing much either. I did do several vocals long ago. you can see some are still posted, but i removed a bunch out of sheer embarrassment!

  • Cool.

  • Very cool!

  • wow! Look who's singing now! :) You're such a brilliant guitarist (and a darn good singer after hearing this). Great job! I will definitely be buying your CD when I get the chance!

  • @kris242

thank you. thankfully, no vocals on the cd! :D

  • Your voice reminds me of John Wetton.

  • @LIVEtoROCK86

really?? cause that guy can really sing. me, not so much.

  • @troubleclef Don't be so quick to doubt yourself. I think you sound pretty damn solid.

  • The really galling thing here is that you make it look so infuriatingly easy with only the standard numbers of fingers, and none of them in a rush. Thanks for all your posts, and thanks for always springing left-field surprises. Inspirational stuff.

  • @1bhaiya

thanks. yeah, all those add9 chords in this are a real bitch. the left forearm starts to hurt if i practice this for too long.

Adding a 9th in a piano chord is a piece of cake. Do it on guitar, in a key that doesn't allow for any open strings, and you've got tendonitis looking over your shoulder! :D

  • I didn't know you could sing... nice job!

  • Tell me where to send the money, I'm buying your CD.

  • You never fail to floor me - thanks so much for this, and please don't stop!

  • This is such an antidote to the crap I'm forced to hear during an average night's telewatching :)

  • Never heard you sing before - fantastic job!

  • @upst8

    thanks, buddy

  • Do you post everything you do or just your best? 'Cause it's amazing how good all the stuff you upload are!

  • @tecoomexicano

I thank you. Not everything. Mostly I just don't finish stuff that I start on. I get 80% of the way into working something out and I get bored with it or it's just too hard to finish. Or I get distracted and start working on 10 other things instead!

  • @troubleclef Hehehehehe, cool. I wish I had half your initiative to arrange such beautiful pieces.

  • My favorite Steely Dan song, very well done :)

  • @damizia

close to my favorite as well. favorite on that album for sure.

  • Well done, keep it up :)

  • Haha, I never realized how good of a singing voice you have! Superb!

  • @cavedweller1996

    i thank you

  • Mark me down for Deacon Blues also, if at all possible. I'd pay for a recording of your 'Life on Mars' arrangement.

    Superb, as always.

  • Amazing! I would love to hear Deacon Blues.

  • Sweet! You should do more Steely Dan covers. They are true perfectionists :)

  • @VeEvey

I did "The Fez" a long while back. You can still see it here on YT. thanks!

  • Good to have you back. Checking evey day to find out about the new cd. John :O)

  • Well done lovely
