For the position A and B, chances are they are used to switch between NTSC or PAL consoles, or to swap the method of functionality. This is because the NES had a block chip which was programmed differently for each console's regional codes preventing 3rd party cartridges from being playable. As for the switch being there for functionality, different updates for the NES probably was constantly changing the block chips coding.

Funny how that whole collection does take less virtual space than a single modern computer game. It would basically fit on a single micro SD card, but it would be unplayable and kinda horrible when the SD card fucks up, so i guess it´s much better this way^^
