  • mosier sent me here

  • now the king of kensington is a savage BARBARIAN LUNATIC MOOSLIME on WELFARE TERRORISING HIS WIFE AND FAMILY AND ATTEMPTING TO DESTROY WESTERN CIVILIZATION

  • Omg I haven't seen that since I was a kid! Great memories!

  • that first scene I use to buy spices their in the 1982's

  • worked and lived around the area 86 to 94 a good stint of time.

  • haha no way

  • :43 Gotta love those plaid pants

  • WHAT A GUY.

  • why can't CBC make shows like this again? Canadians actually liked watching this.

  • bada boom badabing lol

  • where's the episode that Danny Florio is in? he plays Bob Vinci's son.

  • I was 11 when this show first premiered. I saw the ads on the Vancouver buses, and knew I had to see it. A young Mike Myers got his start on this show.

Cathy left him because she was unable to bear children, so she moved to Vancouver with her girlfriend, yes she became a dyke, probably living on Commercial Drive!

  • @visaman No I saw the episode where Cathy left, and bearing children wasn't the issue and neither did she come out of the closet. From what I remember she had an epiphany of some sort and decided to leave Larry. She didn't want to break his heart, but she also didn't want to stuck in a life that she decided wasn't right for her.

  • @swingersfan It's true, saw the episode myself.

  • @swingersfan Actually the reason she left was quite silly. During an episode all of a sudden King started making male chauvenistic comments (which was kind of out of character), she argued with him over his comments and said she was leaving him. Just like that they were divorced

  • @bauble24 Dude, I saw the episode when it was in syndication on SUN TV, and what I described was what happened. Maybe I missed an episode where Larry made that remark, but it wasn't why Cathy left him.

  • @swingersfan Dude, it was a two parter, you probably saw the one where she actually left. The one I saw ended with her saying she was leaving after that argument over woman's rights.

  • @bauble24 Dude, it's a shame they haven't released the 4 other seasons on DVD otherwise I would have seen that episode.

  • @swingersfan Dude, yeah I know :). The worst part is that as a crown corporation, CBC owns the complete rights and they can release a box set directly themselves. I guess they would rather use that money to pay for extravigant parties

  • @dekaybeelzy2 LOL. I vaguely remember this show, but it was used as the butt of a joke about the state of Canadian TV in the past.

  • @dekaybeelzy2 the Beachcombers!!!

  • Louis Del Grande of Seeing things Wrote and Produced episodes of this show.

  • There was a geographic error in the 1st episode: Larry King says he runs his variety store on pembroke st., and that street is nowhere near the Market area.

  • oh, this is badass....we americans ripped it off so fucking much. if only, we had shown credit. this was a great show.

  • Was the American sitcom "King Of Queens" based somewhat on this. I've heard rumors that it was for years?

  • @jldraw : Not hardly! Opposite kinds of guys. But both good at blundering into trouble. They may have borrowed from the title.

  • Sounds like Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy singing the song.

  • I've always liked the way the operator's line interrupted the theme song.

  • TV Land and SunTV aired some season 5 eps. Wish they would go back to the beginning. Heard that the earlier seasons were better.

  • KOK was my "comfort show" (like comfort food) when TV Land (Canada) for some strange reason spun ONLY the *LAST 2 seasons* in a continuous loop. Mousy redhead Tina for the 2nd-last season and opinionated one-of-the-gang horsey Gwen for the last season.

  • SunTV aired a few episodes from seasons 4 and 5 and they quit. Too bad, it was getting better.

  • I only watched bits and parts of this show when CBC(meaning CBLT) showed it on daily reruns in the 80s on cable channel 13 in the Buffalo 'burbs.

I recall that, at some point, Waxman's character became separated from Cathy and started going around with a gal named Tina. What was that about?

BTW... Waxman's character... sharing the same name as CNN's talk-meister.

I thought he was "Archie Bunker" for the Canadians. Seems now he could be a cross between Bunker and Michael.

  • In the first couple seasons, he was married to Cathy who left him near the end of a season (I don't recall if any reason was given why she left). Then at the beginning of the next season you were told that they were divorced.

Since they needed someone for King, it leads a person to believe that Cathy (Fiona Reid) left the show or maybe she was fired?

Maybe there were circumstances like the "Suzanne Somers and Three's Company fiasco" in the early 1980's?

  • I remember when Cathy divorced him! Maybe she left him because he was the only King in town without a buck?

  • Sorry, but the voice at 0:10, sounds like an Italian version of Glenn Quagmire, from Family Guy! loooooooooooool!

  • lol giggity

  • I LOVE this show! I used to watch it every weekday on SunTV, until they pulled off ALL the re-runs. If I remember right, it was also shown on TVLand. Until they pulled it off THAT channel too!! If u could upload an episode or two, I'd be totally grateful. : )

  • So great to find this on youtube - We live in the Detroit area and watched this show on Channel 9. Never missed it. Could you find a clip or two to post? Whaaaat a guy!

  • Thank you for sharing this with me, Loretta! Brings back great memories!

    :)))

  • good show

  • "He's king of KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKENsingtonnnnnnnnnnn.

    What a guy."

  • "What a guy!"

I'd hear that line a few years ago in TV ads for an Erie, PA, car salesman named Charlie.

    "Charlie, WHAT A GUY!"

  • very true discomatador!

  • Shalom. Go eat a bagel.

  • Al was a pretty nice guy. His daughter was/is a lunatic.

  • Icelandic Nazis? Now there is a proper idea for a horror film, and you can star in it!

Who's immigrating to Iceland anyhow? You're 29 years old, man. Open a book, travel, meet people, and realize that YOU are the problem.

  • Al Waxman kicks ass. RIP. Brings backs memories of watching Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Mork & Mindy, Happy Days, The Littlest Hobo, and The Beachcombers. Even as a child you remember these things. Unfortunately some people don't.

  • what's ruining it is that the racists aren't moving to Pluto.

  • That was a racist thing to say. We're probably better off with them here. Just don't want a "Mexi-fornia" thing happening here.

  • i think its already starting... its fine to have them here. what pisses me off is they dont bother learning the language

  • Sounds like parts of New York City nowadays. Parts of Brooklyn or Queens, once populated by all manner of folks(Irish, Italians, Poles, blacks, etc.) who were proud to be "Americans 1st..." now you see signs in Hindi, Urdu, French-Creole, Chinese, and Korean. Are you in New York? Or are you in Bombay? Karachi? Port-Au-Prince? Taipei? Seoul? How do they get services? How do they get residences? If we can't communicate with each other, can we really say we're one nation?

  • I agree. I like listening to Michael Savage talk show. He talks about Borders, Language and Culture. He was born and raised in New York City. Unfortunately he is now banned in Britain.

  • Probably Mr. Savage is considered a bit too blunt for the royal blue blooded blubbering bozos, eh?

  • @LunaSlave Looks like Canada is getting the social problems that they've looked down on America for having...What is it that Nelson Muntz says? Oh, yes: "HA! HA!!"

  • I guess you should go move to some all-white hick town in the southern US if you are so upset about it. Let us know when you are ready to leave so I can hold the door for you. Racist.

  • I didn't say I hated any particular race. I even admitted it was a racist sounding remark. What do want from me?

  • Toronto's still great. The 'burbs suck, though.

  • Wow, I didn't realize Canadians were that into plaid. (just kidding)

  • I used to love this show....Toronto was a fabulous city back then.

  • When I was in high school in the 80's/90's, we used to sit around, usually intoxicated one way or the other, and sing this theme song.

  • I used to watch this show as a child... seeing it again after having spent a lot more time in the Market, I can recognize all the buildings and it is great to see that they are still there in some form or another. Kensington is probably one of my favourite places in the city.

  • Classic Canadiana television. It's a shame that there aren't any shows left like that on TV. King of Kensington, Red Green, true Canadian icons.

  • I use to watch this on KTVU 2 (11:30pm)in the SAN FRANSICKO BAY AREA when I was a kid. I want the DVDs. NETFLIX needs to stock it!

  • Does anybody know whatever became of Larry's pal Duke played by Bob Vinci?

  • What a guy!

The Kensington Market is where I grew up. At the time of this show it was like 95% Portuguese.

King was Jewish (a hold over from the 60's before the Portuguese moved in) Still there was no Portuguese representation on the show, which led me to always find it unacceptable.

    His buddy was Italian!?

  • Which reminds me, matador - I'm writing a script for a sitcom about this German-Polish couple who tries to succeed running their German restaurant in the middle of a predominantly-Italian neighborhood in Pennsylvania. Supporting characters, however, include some Irish-Americans and maybe one or two Italians. If you were Italian, would this be an acceptable ethnic representation?

  • HaHaHa yer right...I would say the same.
