Breland just wasn't built for the pro game, he was too physically vulnerable and fragile... He had great skills, power, technique, speed... He was NOT mediocre, but his pro career was ultimately dissapointing... let's remember, he wasn't hyped up to be merely "good", he was being called the next Sugar Ray Robinson, he was supposed to be the king of the 84 Olympic Class... in that sense, he was a dissapointment big time
@noirnoticvibe Hey man, I've actually been looking to want to train at Morris Parl Boxing. How is it there? Are they thorough in getting your technique right? How are the workouts?
ABC had some GREAT boxing coverage on WW into the early 90s. Davis/Breland, Nigel Benn/Doug DeWitt, Patterson/Hopson (well that was a great KO)...and Dan Dierdorf acquitted himself VERY WELL as a boxing pbp man with the great Alex Wallau on the color. Loved these fights on Saturdays. Whoever did the matchmaking should go and work for HBO PPV...
No offense, but if you care about him why would you want to see him make a comeback. He`s what 47-48,A comeback ids the last thing a good man like Mark Breland needs(IMO of course)
There was some Good shocks in the Welterweight Division.Between 86 and 90.
Honeyghan over Curry.Starling over Breland,Starling Over Honeyghan. And Poor Breland at the end of Another big career defeat.Didn't Jorge Vaca also beat Breland in the earlie 90's at Junior Middle.
I was really hoping that chavez would've moved up and challenged simon brown for his welterweight title after the taylor fight. that would've been a great fight.
My husband, my son and in laws are related to mark. My father n law's name was Andrew Breland formally of Bamberg, SC and Brooklyn, NY. He has passed on. I was proud of Mark and used to watch him box. I wish he would make a comeback.
Breland? These days?Financially solvent............... Unlike every other 84 Olympian.Didn't quite live up to his amateur prmoise but makes a nice change to the usual "boxer broke" stories you hear all to often.
Hats off to you Aaron! Always knew you had the heart of a tiger, even when I fought you three times in amateur boxing. You should still remember me (Donovan). 147 lbs Open class. 1985.
that advert at 1.30 is so bad its funny. would be better if when he was walking along street a cop car pulls up and they put him down on the ground at gun point.
these lads put on a bruiser of a fight here..respect to both men..i remeber thinking that mark would set the pro game alight..didnt quite happen, but he gave it a go..RESPECX 2 BOTH OF EM
Breland, great amateur fighter, didn't live up to full expectations as a pro considering his amateur record and accomplishments.Always kept that left hand low and was able to get away with it most of the time, but not this time.A true gentleman and probably didn't have that killer instinct in the pros.Maybe he lost interest in longer fights.Giving back as a trainer now with an up n'coming tall welterwt (Teran)like himself.Much success Mark,a true credit to boxing.
i met mark a few times as an amateur boxer in the early 80s. glad i never had to fight him. he seemed like a good dude, quiet and respectful, and we all thought he'd be an amazing pro. it didn't quite pan out, but he had a good career and quit at the right time. i wish him the best, and proud that he's a new yorker.
@31eastfield mark was an amazing amateur (110-1) who was pretty much unbeatable. as a pro, however, he never lived up to the hopes we had for him. he had a lot of kayos, but was kayoed himself three times, and never was able to dominate his division as he did the amateurs. i saw him fight in the nyc golden gloves a few times, and he pretty much outclassed everyone.
@sidethehead Phenomenal record!!! He was a little dissapointing as a pro but still a world champ that would cause so many champions trouble in ANY era...A very good fighter without being a great. Can I ask what your record was? How long did you boxed for? Respect to you anyway, I have respect for all fighters you entertain us and put in so much hard work. Wish I had the motivation and discipline I have now back when I was in my early teens. I would have definately give it a good go :-)
@31eastfield Hahaha....Breland was one of the best amateur fighters to come from America, but as a pro, he was very average. In a three round fight(amateur length back then) Breland's weaknesses were never exposed(his lack of stamina, weak chin & awkward punching angles), but as a pro they were glaringly evident.....
@31eastfield ... he was mediocre as a pro. Average to say the very best. Don't be upset if someone say that, because many great fighters have fantastic amatuer careers but that's that!
@MegaYouri13 He was a world champion. Average? What kind of Alice in Wonderland world are you living in? Clifford Hicks was an average fighter. Mike Grable was an average fighter. Average means is in the middle of his grouping. Breland was average as championship calibre fighters go, but championship calibre fighters are world class fighters.
@MegaYouri13 There are no champs who are blown up chumps. There are champs who were lucky in their timing and were simply very, very good boxers who might otherwise not have won a title. He was expected to be the next Tommy Hearns, and those were unrealistic expectations. But he could fight.

He was no chump, but her certainly wasn't the top talent at the pro level at that time or perhaps 10 years forward and backward at the peak of his career. haha dat was one of d dumbest things i ever heard.. u don't win olympic gold n have a amateur record of 100+ wins wit just 1 loss if u got "mediocre talent"
This fight was started in Percy's Barber Shop in the Bronx, Both fighters were int the shop talking crap to each other, when finally they let their mgt team set up the fight. It was funny that day.
Tompkins in the house, where Mark was a hero! I remember hyping up Mark in front of classmates at school. I also remember the Gold Mercedes. And who in that neighborhood could forget the surprise Olympic homecoming party, long before this knockout, though!
I remember Breland wasting Lloyd Honeyghan( who hammered Don Curry) to take the world title in mid 80's. Breland just kept decking him with straight rights. Thanks for the upload.
used to spar with Breland at the Coney Island Boxing Club in the late seventies. Some questioned his heart because he didn't act like a punk. Tyson would come around and talk crap when he wasn't busy hiding in elevators, mugging old ladies in the projects.
He was fast and never hit me that hard, but he may not have wanted to. (I wasn't as accomplished as he was at the time.)
I remember Mark Breland from the amateurs, He was hyped a lot prior to the 1984 Olympics and he lived up to his potential as an amateur. I think he had a lot of problems with brittle hands and he was compared to Tommy Hearns.
you're right about his hands. he was a thin dude, with bony hands, not so great for a boxer. i remember he had a few breaks, and i'm sure that affected his confidence as a puncher. i fought in the same division as him in the 80s, and he was a nice guy, especially considering the environment he came from. i wish him the best.
Breland and Hearns used to pull their left low when throwing their big right hands. The danger there is walking into another right EXACTLY like Breland does. I mean Breland's left hand is actually below his own belt as he eats a Davis right.
mark breland had some much class and charisma a lot of dudes was hatin on him because he was a gentleman...after this fight aaron said he gotta say breland was better than he thought...i had breland winning....i've trained with aaron up in morris park boxing gym, bronx ny he's a classy guy himself
You obviously don't know anything about boxing, he was clearly winning the fight and only a Dumb Ass, such as yourself would make that comment. Get a life!
I was 13 when i saw this fight, and if i remember they where gonna stop the fight, cuz of davis's eye. but he said give me one more round, and he knocked him out in that round. I could be wrong, but it was a great fight anyway.
Thanks for posting. I remember I was working at Wal-Mart that day and I missed it. The only part I've ever seen (before now) was the knockout. Thanks again.

Disappointing? He was 35-3.
His losses were to Starling (41-4), Davis (29-0), and Vaca (48-8-1).
He fought 6 title fights in 1989-1990 - he won 5 by KO and was KO'd in this clip. He clearly gave Davis as much as he could handle though.
Granted his competition wasn't much after his 2nd loss, but before that he was fighting legit fighters before then.
