Your kidding right? He was a junkie for almost 30 years. Jack and Ginger got Eric intoduced to smack and the money men moved in and pulled Eric out of there, saving their cash cow.
Real shame too, Cream was probably the greatest rock band ever.
Baker just smoked pot and sniffed some cocaine, he never got into heavy stuff ( heroin, etc ), he even said to Eric that if Eric started using heroin he would cut Eric's balls
Hey BSFBOPE, you don't get great by taking drugs. You get great by practicing. You heard him, he practiced all day long. He's English, that's why he speaks that way. Layed back and slow. Not like Americans. So fast you can't hear a word they're saying.
I love seeing this vid again. I saw it once in the 60's and thx to youtube I can see it again. Ginger was/is a drummer of great tones, styles and timings. His use of Jazz/Rock/African odd timings and melodies, opened up many options for drummers in the 60's. In my opinion he was the only rock drummer using the drumset as orchestral instrument back then.He is still a fabulous innovator even today. His son Kofi is a killer drummer technician as well.

I never understood why he got so much credit on his drumming ....compared with Mitch Mitchell or Mike Shrieve to name just other two drummers from the same generation.....
oohhhhhhh no. i can see where youre coming from with that. i am compared to cream a huge fan of the experience but then when you think about it look at the live performances of mm and baker and youll see gb playing faster and harder stuff. thats only thing that let mitchell down but when it came to studio stuff he was the opposite. theres a reason why cream was looked up to by a lot of the bands, cream and hendrix went famous at roughly the same time but cream got famous quicker
they were all the best in their fields for a loooong time. its just like asking whos better john entwhistle or john paul jones of ledzep. je is without the most incredible bassist (cliff burtons playing could dispute that) but all he was almost a duo lead guitarist with townshend if you get what i mean. if hed have switched to electric guitar hed have been so much more famous. jpj was more a bassist and unlike je had a harder job keeping up with the lguitarist. he played more structured harder
Yes , I know what you mean...just wondering , I'm a drummer myself and I don't see anything special on him as you can see on Mitchell , Paice , Bonham to name old legends .
Hey lolodrums. Man if that's what you think then you know nothing about the drums. Hang it up and go get a job driving a garbage truck. Cause that's all your saying. Nothing but Garbage. None of those guys you mention can carry Ginger's drums. Let alone play anywhere close to nor like him. And if there's some similarities in one or two beats those guys use? They stole it from The Almighty Ginger Baker. And that ends it!!! GINGER BAKER is the LAST WORDS in DRUMS and GREAT DRUMMING!!!!
Ok, as far as I'm concerned Ginger is maybe the most innovative drummer on the world. Many are faster than him, many are louder than him and many are more precise than him, but no one gets the rhythm going like Ginger. Listen to his playing on Sunshine of your love. That's a song that requires nothing special from a drummer. No doubles, no complicated rudiments or anything like that, but it requires extreme sense of rhythm. He is the song while he plays it.. it would be nothing wituhout Ginger.
This guy is not exactly a member of The Royal Family. More like lower class East End Cockney. It's also very apparent that he's under the influence. The affects of heroin on a jazz ride pattern.
His style is loose and was formed during the jazz era. I think a lot of players today are more regimented or tighter sounding and thus can't relate to a loose old school player like Baker. Still, the guy could do some very innovative/remarkable African style drumming on the kit. He was very original and that is where he gets his legend from (i.e. his innovation). Listen to Live Cream's NSU sometime. I think you'll appreciate him more after that.
Unfortunately I never saw Ginger perform live, but he is certainly my earliest influence and the reason I play 2bl bass drums today. Well actually, I dropped the second bass drum and went to a double pedal..Anyway, Ginger is certainly one of the greatest influential drummers in rock history!

Expense is relative. I've paid different prices for both at different times. Depends on who your buying from. They are quite a bit louder than wood and great live and cutting throught a heavy band. They are tough to record with. They record rather flat sounding. Pinstripe heads help but wood is a better recording kit. They are a little lighter than wood shells but not much. I've recorded and toured with both, had Red,Green, and Amber kits in the Bonzo sizes. Loved em all.
Where does stuff come from? I could have used this 40 yrs ago. This is fantastic. Ginger was a true landmark of a drummer. At the time, few people could master double bass, all those Zildjian's doubled up on one stand. He was the first to do that. Great stuff. Thanks.
Ginger is without a doubt one of the best rock drummers if not the best. I have had the hardest time learning his stuff I think of any rock drummer out there. He is just a master...nobody can put this man down in my opinion. Thanks for putting this video up by the way, I may finally start to get his stuff down that he does it in full view. He has unbelievable groove.
To me, he is one of the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time. One of my personal all-time heroes.
He was such a great drummer, under the influence or not. He used to trip off a lot of different drugs, such as amphetamines and drank heavily, like most English rockers of the time. Especially during Cream's Farewell Tour in '68, when this interview took place. Overall, smashing video. Rock on Ginger!
i'd like to have almost exactly the same sound that ginger had in the songs "white room" and "strange brew" can anyone instruct me on how to achieve this sound thanks!
Ginger explains a lot of secrets in his recently re-released video "Master drum technique" which is well worth getting. Bits of it can be seen here on youtube...
Try using drum sizes in "traditional depths" like 8 x 12 and 9 x 13 (including bass drums in 14 x 22 or 14 x 20) with white coated heads tuned to around medium tension with no muffling.
I think the think that sets Ginger Baker apart from his contempries (like Moon & Bonham) was his good Jazz grounding and the fact that he had a good rudimentary technique, thanks to Phil Seamen...
Wow... everything I "thought" I knew about this great drummer apparently wasn't even half as much of what he can actually do... and this is early years! Thanks for posting!!!
its not close mic'ed (i dont think there was much of that back then anyways), and its old footage. Honestly, i prefer that clipped/large sized tom and bass drum/late 60's-early 70's drum sound...way more organic sounding than what drummers sound like today.
I liked Mitch Mitchell's sound, and Clive Bunker also. But Ginger's sound was a bit too "floppy" at times. Sounds like a bad garage band (tonally) to me.
Hm, i think ginger probably used larger drums than mitch did in the early days. mitch drums sounded bigger after the first album, then everyones kits sounded kinda huge and floppy i felt like...but i think the micing technique also helped for that sound..most of thes guys were probably recorded almost exlusively overhead. maybe on a snare or bass drum mic. I prefer that 4 mic set up myself or just the overheads. Close mic'ing always felt resonate-less.
I KNOW who Ginger Baker is! I listened to him in 1968! One of my major influences in my drumming career! I'm referring to Tusty McMaughan, that another person referred to.
YEAH! YOU! Dude! I type in caps to make a point of emphasis on my words, such as, GO BE WEIRD W/ SOMEONE ELSE, AND STOP YOUR ANNOYING MESSAGES TO ME!!!!! See? It works! Ta Da!!
(Add sniveling little voice to following sentence)"3eyedho- did anyone tell you that writing in capitals is lame"? ...Reply-That's how! Your apology, however, is accepted. Bye bye, now.
ginger is a unique entity..he`s a wizard.

Ahh you gotta love ya some Ginger.

Great drummer. I think drugs and alcohol sort of took over his life after a while.

i'd like to have almost exactly the same sound that ginger had in the songs "white room" and "strange brew" can anyone instruct me on how to achieve this sound thanks!

I really enjoyed the jazz bit, and his comments
but his technique was awful :>

His technique is awful?
:-o
I think the think that sets Ginger Baker apart from his contempries (like Moon & Bonham) was his good Jazz grounding and the fact that he had a good rudimentary technique, thanks to Phil Seamen...

Wow... everything I "thought" I knew about this great drummer apparently wasn't even half as much of what he can actually do... and this is early years! Thanks for posting!!!

Drum tones sound like crap, but he is awesome. So humble and kind, seemingly!

its not close mic'ed (i dont think there was much of that back then anyways), and its old footage.

3eyedho 4 years ago
Hm, i think ginger probably used larger drums than mitch did in the early days. mitch drums sounded bigger after the first album, then everyones kits sounded kinda huge and floppy i felt like...but i think the micing technique also helped for that sound..most of thes guys were probably recorded almost exlusively overhead. maybe on a snare or bass drum mic. I prefer that 4 mic set up myself or just the overheads. Close mic'ing always felt resonate-less.

3eyed - what about Tutsy McMaughan?
dowling1981 4 years ago
I'm sorry, I have never heard of that person. Who is he, and who did he play with. Make me less ignorant, and reply. Thanks!
3eyedho 4 years ago
He is Ginger Baker, most likely the greatest rock drummer of the 60s. He played with Eric Clapton in a group called Cream.
There were other good drummers back then, but Ginger was the best!
duester45 4 years ago
I KNOW who Ginger Baker is! I listened to him in 1968! One of my major influences in my drumming career! I'm referring to Tusty McMaughan, that another person referred to.

3eyedho - have you not heard 'A Finton Warrior' by the Mandroid Wreckhearts?
dowling1981 4 years ago
I know people who listen to the most obscure bands out there, but you speak a different language, bro!
3eyedho 4 years ago
3eyedho - Do you not think it is rather finton to describe one who speaks of a band you do not know as speaking another language?

dowling1981 4 years ago
YEAH! YOU! Dude! I type in caps to make a point of emphasis on my words, such as, GO BE WEIRD W/ SOMEONE ELSE, AND STOP YOUR ANNOYING MESSAGES TO ME!!!!! See? It works! Ta Da!!
3eyedho 4 years ago
3eyedho - I am sorry that was not my intention. How was I being annoying??
dowling1981 4 years ago
(Add sniveling little voice to following sentence)"3eyedho- did anyone tell you that writing in capitals is lame"? ...Reply-That's how! Your apology, however, is accepted. Bye bye, now.
