  • ginger is a unique entity..he`s a wizard.

  • He was why you get all the rock drummers of today, but his roots were in Jazz, whereas Robert wyatt did not go down the rock path but He and Ginger were the pioneers of Drumming in that era, there were other great drummers also. Ginger certainly was born with it.

  • 2:45 - 3:30 :0 bleeww me awayy just soounnds soo amazinng xDD

  • "And thats the joke effect" HAHAHA

    The kit sounds mint!!!!!

  • how would i get my bass drum to sound something like that?

  • @aero105 put a child in it

  • @aero105 Dont muffle it :)

  • @pinkjoey3 Exactly! :) Muffling just kill your drum's sound!

  • poser not powser

  • Two cymbals on one stand, no booms, drummers are so spoilt with equipment these days

  • awesome

  • Goddamn it, this guy is more high than I am right now, and I'm as baked as it gets for a Saturday afternoon!

  • He is high as a kite xD

  • he is the best drummer ever isnt he?he ist the jimmy H of the drums..peace n greetz mike

  • Jimi not Jimmy powser

  • His playing is good but hi drums sound horrible.

  • This is no drum clinic, it's part of the Farewell concert in 1968 from the Royal Albert Hall.

  • No, if you listen to the Blind Faith album, it sounds great: the recording sucks

  • dude, its 1968.

  • Ginger baker's autobiography will be published appear in October . I'll buy it!!!.

  • That fourth thing is pretty hard.

  • this is amazing

  • Fuckin' legend this man is!

  • Excellent. I saw him playing in Hyde Park in 1968, one of the best drummers ever.

    Thanks for the vid.

  • Ginger is just a shy guy, look at his mimics infront of the camara, then watch him play - all alone doing his stuff. BTW he talks like Alec Ferguson, he's an addict too????

  • I liked him in hawkwind !

  • Why aren't Rock journalists like this these days? A modern journalist would be asking how big his cock is, how many groupies he's had and then writing about how he isn't a model. Drummers still don't get the respect they deserve. We rule!!!!

  • Great drummers on Ginger Baker...

Charlie Watts says he is the most accomplished drummer to ever come out of England.

    John Bonham called him 'astonishing'.

  • its sounds like he didnt mute his bass drum

  • man.....2:50 when he starts swinging......its the sickest shit ever......i want him for my jazz band!!! hahahaha

  • "most of the time its a ride cymbal" What?? what is it the rest of the time??

  • a giant hihat lol.

  • LMFAO

  • besides riding 4:18 he says he rolls on it too

  • such a monster drummer. he was a junkie for a while right?

  • Your kidding right? He was a junkie for almost 30 years. Jack and Ginger got Eric intoduced to smack and the money men moved in and pulled Eric out of there, saving their cash cow.

Real shame too, Cream was probably the greatest rock band ever.

  • Baker just smoked pot and sniffed some cocaine, he never got into heavy stuff ( heroin, etc ), he even said to Eric that if Eric started using heroin he would cut Eric's balls

  • well, im not really sure about that, ive read Eric's autobiography and he says Ginger was an heroin addict

  • He was. And he look like!

  • heroin addict for 21 years

  • aha.

    "Can you show us?"

    "-at this time of day?"

    BAKER is god

  • hi there everyone.i've just started out playin the drums & learnt some brilliant stuff watching atrue master play, thanks for the lesson, mr baker.

  • well you are certainly on the right track. keep it up and don't get discouraged!

    happy playing!!!

  • this guys fukin stoned, but he was a great drummer...one of the best

  • Hey BSFBOPE, you don't get great by taking drugs. You get great by practicing. You heard him, he practiced all day long. He's English, that's why he speaks that way. Layed back and slow. Not like Americans. So fast you can't hear a word they're saying.

  • Ginger Baker's a true GIANT of the DRUMS.

  • I love seeing this vid again. I saw it once in the 60's and thx to youtube I can see it again. Ginger was/is a drummer of great tones, styles and timings. His use of Jazz/Rock/African odd timings and melodies, opened up many options for drummers in the 60's. In my opinion he was the only rock drummer using the drumset as orchestral instrument back then.He is still a fabulous innovator even today. His son Kofi is a killer drummer technician as well.

  • jazzy fucking stoned drummer!! how the hell can he play like that with his head so full of drugs, he can't speak properly...

  • Very easy man,.,your gigging all the time,.ya dont remember exactly what you played ,.but went for the feel.,.and improve and improvise on the spot,.I cant read crap all my life,.just met and played with a lot of `feel ` kats. Its got nothing to do with any training or school. I already had great technique from the get go. One thing for sure ,.there are alot of really good players who arent even trying to make it.Academics can always be learned later,.if ya not to burned out.

  • Hey Mr Malapersona, you can't even spell Ginger's name properly. For the record it's Ginger BAKER!

  • You are right. It was a keyboard mistake.

    Now it´s OK.

  • RUDY-MENTS!!! THE RUDY-MENTS!!!

  • Ginger looks like he has'nt had no sleep for a month in this clip.

  • oohhhhhhh no. i can see where youre coming from with that. i am compared to cream a huge fan of the experience but then when you think about it look at the live performances of mm and baker and youll see gb playing faster and harder stuff. thats only thing that let mitchell down but when it came to studio stuff he was the opposite. theres a reason why cream was looked up to by a lot of the bands, cream and hendrix went famous at roughly the same time but cream got famous quicker

  • they were all the best in their fields for a loooong time. its just like asking whos better john entwhistle or john paul jones of ledzep. je is without the most incredible bassist (cliff burtons playing could dispute that) but all he was almost a duo lead guitarist with townshend if you get what i mean. if hed have switched to electric guitar hed have been so much more famous. jpj was more a bassist and unlike je had a harder job keeping up with the lguitarist. he played more structured harder

  • Yes , I know what you mean...just wondering , I'm a drummer myself and I don't see anything special on him as you can see on Mitchell , Paice , Bonham to name old legends .

Just my opinion . Regards .

  • Hey lolodrums. Man if that's what you think then you know nothing about the drums. Hang it up and go get a job driving a garbage truck. Cause that's all your saying. Nothing but Garbage. None of those guys you mention can carry Ginger's drums. Let alone play anywhere close to nor like him. And if there's some similarities in one or two beats those guys use? They stole it from The Almighty Ginger Baker. And that ends it!!! GINGER BAKER is the LAST WORDS in DRUMS and GREAT DRUMMING!!!!

  • stuff and was really versatile creating more of a groove than entwhistle mesmerising playing.

  • Ok, as far as I'm concerned Ginger is maybe the most innovative drummer on the world. Many are faster than him, many are louder than him and many are more precise than him, but no one gets the rhythm going like Ginger. Listen to his playing on Sunshine of your love. That's a song that requires nothing special from a drummer. No doubles, no complicated rudiments or anything like that, but it requires extreme sense of rhythm. He is the song while he plays it.. it would be nothing wituhout Ginger.

  • Ginger sounds spaced out haha

    Cracking drummer though.

  • If you don't appreciate the Ginger, then you must really suck as a person.

  • I agree, why all the criticism of Ginger? He was definitely one of the best rock drummers. Quit hating people!

  • ah buddy rich hes class he is what he is! but one time he tryed 2 play funk bajaysus!!!!! wasnt 2 gud!!

  • This guy is not exactly a member of The Royal Family. More like lower class East End Cockney. It's also very apparent that he's under the influence. The affects of heroin on a jazz ride pattern.

  • Dude travis barker sucks, he just his the drums hard and in an easy beat

  • yeh man well said i cant say hes bad but hes completely over rated !

  • His style is loose and was formed during the jazz era. I think a lot of players today are more regimented or tighter sounding and thus can't relate to a loose old school player like Baker. Still, the guy could do some very innovative/remarkable African style drumming on the kit. He was very original and that is where he gets his legend from (i.e. his innovation). Listen to Live Cream's NSU sometime. I think you'll appreciate him more after that.

  • i didnt mean ginger baker lol

i was saying travis barker is over rated lol

  • Ok...the "kids" think he is better than Buddy Rich but I guess they're young.

  • i no buddy rich is better ... lol im only foureennn dont diss teens :D lol

  • i didnt mean ginger baker i meant travis barker u idiots

    i worship ginger baker !

  • omg he freakin awesome, so funny how hes so cool about it too. ahaha legend

  • While I wouldnt be surprised hes fucked up, its also possible he isnt, because thats definately what he just sounds like.

  • Hes on drugs i think

  • but these go to eleven.....

  • Oh dear his flams aren't perfect. tsk tsk.

  • at 00.32 he reminds of roger waters of pink floyd!!!

  • OOh! Ginger! nice drumming and all but those sunken cheeks!

    Speed Kills dear. ;)

  • travis barker sucks

  • hes a fucking faggot and no where near ginger

  • he's got a jazz grip.

  • he looks wasted and half drunk

  • a band is alsways as good as the drummer is.

  • "at this time of day"

    much love ginger

  • Ginger IMO wrote the first and best ever drumbook for rock drummers, I still practise form it, too bad it is not available any more.

  • After listening to Ginger, meet the man who was Ginger´s drum teacher, and compare:

    watch?v=0L3ACAoPA8o

  • "At this time of day?"... he asks, sat at his drum kit!

  • It's good he's clean now. Go, Ginger! Hell, yeah! Hopa! [Whatever that means lol]

  • I've heard of Ginger Baker, but who's Ginger Barker?

  • lol a freakin stoned guy who everyone seems to idol lol ahahahahah hes stoned like in every video on youtube

  • well it was the 60s man everyone was stoned ur parents might have been stoned who knows.

that back then was a time of peace cuz the drugs mellowed u out.

  • mitch mitchell for me but he was influenced by this guy

  • he's better than bonham and moon

  • What's that sign that reads BIRDCAGE WALK behind him?

  • Looks like it was nicked from a wall near Buckinghm Palace!!

  • Wow, the jazz "part" is truly good. Remember, Ginger plays jazz(on his early days).Master of drumming.

  • Unfortunately I never saw Ginger perform live, but he is certainly my earliest influence and the reason I play 2bl bass drums today. Well actually, I dropped the second bass drum and went to a double pedal..Anyway, Ginger is certainly one of the greatest influential drummers in rock history!

  • thats awsome

  • Pete Baker in '68...single handedly killed almost every drummer ever to grace a stage big time !!!

  • hes the fucking best.

  • was he fuck

  • Interviewers back then were such TWATS !!!

  • the bass drums suck but he is awesome

  • wow, a great jazz drummer rocking!

  • Change the headline of the video.. it's Baker not Barker, dont ever disgrace and downgrade his name

  • no he was on heroin for 21 yrs.

  • my god that groove at 2:50 is just...TO FUCKING COOL FOR SCHOOL

  • my god that groove at 2:50 is just...TO FUCKING COOL FOR SCHOOL

  • "you want me to play em....." lmfao

  • So Harlan1988, who are the other 9?

  • I would love some of that talent... and if that can't be done I'll have some of his drugs..

  • he was good but stoned

  • He looks like he's Tripping on Acid.....

  • It wasn't Acid my friend, he was a Heroin addict from 1963 to 1981

  • somehow i knew that was your comment, eric

  • those drums sound beautiful

  • 2:50 - 3:28 = Godlike

  • Why do they call it a 'clinic'? Anybody?

  • Coz he's stoned.

  • HAHAHA!!! he's REALLY stoned!

  • one of the great drum legends

  • I didn't know he had a jazzy swing type light playing ability COOL.

  • God Bless Ginger. Wow. Only seen this clip once and I kept trying to find it. This has so

many aspects and fundamentals of drumming. He

was and still is a total Master. This is great

stuff. Thanks for sharing with the drumming community. Boy, I need to practice!

  • Heavy African influence. He had Phil Seamen show him a thing or two.

  • a true jazz drummer

  • ginger baker is one of the top 10 drummers

  • I wonder if he goes on utube...watches this an laughs.

  • this, boys and girls, is a ROCK STAR. ginger doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves for influencing generations of drummers... including the likes of john henry bonham. the best quote i've ever heard from a drummer came from him: "your job is to make the other guys sound good. that's your gig." if only the young up-and-comers could absorb this type of philosophy, what amazing steps might be taken...

  • love the Scooby Doo toms! awesome...its a shame everyone these days muffles the hell out of drums, ya don't get all that raunchy mid range any more...not as musical and open

  • totally agree man, drummers today have forgot about the pitch and tone of drums

  • yeah man, I think John Bonham had the best combination of attack and overtone. It was kinda straight up the middle there, thats my rule of thumb(generally) for just about everything...

  • Ludwigs are not (and never were) a cheap drumset.

  • I've played all my life. MANY different kits, wood and vistalite. I have to disagree. In the 80's and since then due to trying to compete with the low cost of Tama, Pearl etc. Ludwig has turned out some real crap. I'll take anything from say 76 and back. But I also havent played any newer luds, they may have improved

  • What's it like to play a Vistalite kit? Are they more expensive than wood shells? Heavier? Louder?

  • Expense is relative. I've paid different prices for both at different times. Depends on who your buying from. They are quite a bit louder than wood and great live and cutting throught a heavy band. They are tough to record with. They record rather flat sounding. Pinstripe heads help but wood is a better recording kit. They are a little lighter than wood shells but not much. I've recorded and toured with both, had Red,Green, and Amber kits in the Bonzo sizes. Loved em all.

  • Where does stuff come from? I could have used this 40 yrs ago. This is fantastic. Ginger was a true landmark of a drummer. At the time, few people could master double bass, all those Zildjian's doubled up on one stand. He was the first to do that. Great stuff. Thanks.

  • Simple - the guy learned music. He's Stewart Copeland's second favorite drummer.

  • Louie Bellson pioneered the Double Bass Drum back in the 1940's.

  • He has such a cute smile at 0:43 :)

  • Ginger is without a doubt one of the best rock drummers if not the best. I have had the hardest time learning his stuff I think of any rock drummer out there. He is just a master...nobody can put this man down in my opinion. Thanks for putting this video up by the way, I may finally start to get his stuff down that he does it in full view. He has unbelievable groove.

  • Ahh you gotta love ya some Ginger.

To me, he is one of the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time. One of my personal all-time heroes.

He was such a great drummer, under the influence or not. He used to trip off a lot of different drugs, such as amphetamines and drank heavily, like most English rockers of the time. Especially during Cream's Farewell Tour in '68, when this interview took place. Overall, smashing video. Rock on Ginger!

  • crazy drummer! awesome

  • amazing drummer, quite modest and quite wasted rock on

  • Great drummer. I think drugs and alcohol sort of took over his life after a while.

  • i'd like to have almost exactly the same sound that ginger had in the songs "white room" and "strange brew" can anyone instruct me on how to achieve this sound thanks!

  • Ginger explains a lot of secrets in his recently re-released video "Master drum technique" which is well worth getting. Bits of it can be seen here on youtube...

  • Try using drum sizes in "traditional depths" like 8 x 12 and 9 x 13 (including bass drums in 14 x 22 or 14 x 20) with white coated heads tuned to around medium tension with no muffling.

  • I really enjoyed the jazz bit, and his comments

but his technique was awful :>

  • His technique is awful?

    :-o

I think the think that sets Ginger Baker apart from his contempries (like Moon & Bonham) was his good Jazz grounding and the fact that he had a good rudimentary technique, thanks to Phil Seamen...

  • his bass drum sounds tuned pretty high

  • jepp,heroin

  • he is on drug?

  • he loved speed weed coke and smack. not to mention uppers downers and of course everybodies favorite lady alcohol

  • Ginger, John Bonham, and Mitch Mitchellson are my idols. Ginger and John are my biggest influences.

  • i have been looking for this vid for a long time , i love watching my dad talk about his stile thanks for posting it . kofi baker

  • Wow... everything I "thought" I knew about this great drummer apparently wasn't even half as much of what he can actually do... and this is early years! Thanks for posting!!!

  • that look on 0:17 is absolutely quality. legend

  • Drum tones sound like crap, but he is awesome. So humble and kind, seemingly!

  • its not close mic'ed (i dont think there was much of that back then anyways), and its old footage. Honestly, i prefer that clipped/large sized tom and bass drum/late 60's-early 70's drum sound...way more organic sounding than what drummers sound like today.

  • I liked Mitch Mitchell's sound, and Clive Bunker also. But Ginger's sound was a bit too "floppy" at times. Sounds like a bad garage band (tonally) to me.

  • Hm, i think ginger probably used larger drums than mitch did in the early days. mitch drums sounded bigger after the first album, then everyones kits sounded kinda huge and floppy i felt like...but i think the micing technique also helped for that sound..most of thes guys were probably recorded almost exlusively overhead. maybe on a snare or bass drum mic. I prefer that 4 mic set up myself or just the overheads. Close mic'ing always felt resonate-less.

  • 3eyed - what about Tutsy McMaughan?

  • I'm sorry, I have never heard of that person. Who is he, and who did he play with. Make me less ignorant, and reply. Thanks!

  • He is Ginger Baker, most likely the greatest rock drummer of the 60s. He played with Eric Clapton in a group called Cream.

There were other good drummers back then, but Ginger was the best!

  • I KNOW who Ginger Baker is! I listened to him in 1968! One of my major influences in my drumming career! I'm referring to Tusty McMaughan, that another person referred to.

  • 3eyedho - have you not heard 'A Finton Warrior' by the Mandroid Wreckhearts?

  • I know people who listen to the most obscure bands out there, but you speak a different language, bro!

  • 3eyedho - Do you not think it is rather finton to describe one who speaks of a band you do not know as speaking another language?

  • Are the drugs good?

  • Yes, actually

  • VERY WELL, THEN!

  • 3eyedho - has anyone ever told you that writing in capitals is lame?

  • YEAH! YOU! Dude! I type in caps to make a point of emphasis on my words, such as, GO BE WEIRD W/ SOMEONE ELSE, AND STOP YOUR ANNOYING MESSAGES TO ME!!!!! See? It works! Ta Da!!

  • 3eyedho - I am sorry that was not my intention. How was I being annoying??

  • (Add sniveling little voice to following sentence)"3eyedho- did anyone tell you that writing in capitals is lame"? ...Reply-That's how! Your apology, however, is accepted. Bye bye, now.
