The husband cheats on wife in the video, but the director didn't even bother to show the other woman assuming this hot guy is too good looking for his wife so it's only the matter of time he goes and sleeps with another woman.when the song goes:it's no sacrifice, it's two hearts living in two separate world it's suggesting:being faithful to you is no sacrifice since the other woman is only stranger and there is no love between us.or if a mam really love his woman,then her look wont matter.
@TheNel1974 The wife was once a stranger who the man fell in love with.... 'Falling in love' and 'love' are two different things. 'Attraction' is yet a different matter (Excuse my digression).
On the other hand, I partly agree with you. 'Some things look better baby just passing through' - the idea of having an affair with a stranger illusively seems to be more attractive than the long-term relationship with a husband/wife. It could be someone singing to his/her potential lover.
@0691VIVIAN ,I always found this music video disrespectful to the wife, showing her face dancing with the man and then the song going :scent of the other woman lingers, as if he isn't contented with her. it just doesn't fit since the lady really is quite an attractive woman while may be not a conventional beauty.
@0691VIVIAN, or probably that's just not what exactly happening?i admit i always found it confusing.specially the part that she leaves her baby.and later living quite a lavish lifestyle. what's your impression?
@0691VIVIAN , I don't think this has anything to do with the wife's looks(she obviously is a pretty lady and when it shows her all glamorous in that fancy bed and him thinking about her probably is emphasizing on this )It's about the man's regret over his action.the song/video is about importance of fidelity in relationship when there is love in between and the fact that when one party makes such a huge mistake takes the ultimate consequence and the video show this perfectly.

This song reminds me of my first and only girlfriend who I had to leave. She is a muslim, I am not. We met in 2006 and started seeing each other in Secret, she was taking huge risks. Sometimes her dad would beat her hard if she went back home late.
Six years later, I moved to a different country. I told her I would go back for her, but I never did, because I convinced myself we are never going to be together. Now she is married to another person, but we still talk on the phone.
this song takes me back to my childhood, and for some reason makes me feel really happy and calm. I'm a metalhead these days but man, did we have great music in the late 80's-early ninties....Rod Stewart at his prime, Elton....i saw them both recentley and despite their age they can still wipe any of the modern day "popstars" right of the stage. these guys were and are the real deal....
in the video is it Stefan Dennis when he was younger playing the man in the video if any knows then respond to this comment please and let me know because it looks like him
Exactly - 'there's a part of artistic freedom in terms of interpreting it'. The idea that the woman left her husband and the baby for fame and money would make the whole story too primitive. Against all the facts and the director's or the song writer's explanations - I choose the version about the end of a love affair and the sacrifice of love for the sake of family. And it's not him but her who decides to leave. Her heart has to be cold, she has to suppress her feelings...
@0691VIVIAN,I like the lobe affair version better,but it simply isn't the one.thevideo simplified the song and for the main part yes, it goes along with it since the song is not about affair,but about ending of marriage when the loss of relationship isn't sacrifice.In the video the actual divorce happens at the end, when the man closes the envelope as if is ending their marriage.The woman seems contented with her glamorous lifestyle and the manhappily is dancing with his little girl.
@SleepingWithThePast , I think she left him for money and probably fame.when she is running with her cloths in 2:07, there is big sign of "Broadway Hollywood"which could be a clue.you can obviously see how glamorous and stylish she looks(by 80's standards)toward the end.as if she is a model or some celebrity.at least that's how i saw it.
I wish everything was this easy as this video clip... and I wish I could split myself to two... On one side Family, Children and on the otherside wonderful woman with love and passion...
The video is open to interpretation but the actual context of the song (confirmed by Bernie Taupin) is about a man's infidelity where the man is singing to his wife. His love to her is cold & he blames her. Ultimately, the loss of their love & marriage is deemed as no sacrifice...nothing of value is lost. The affair is confirmed in the 2nd verse as there's negative fallout "after the fact". This is not a happy song by any means.
@SleepingWithThePast ,yeah, that's what all men do after they cheat on their wives, they blame her.what a lame excuse, i mean if you interpret the song correctly, then the songwriter is cheating man with a huge ego.

@izadowicz , I have to admit this is not a straight forward lyrics. very open to interpretation. but as far as the video, i think it simplified/melodramized the song somehow.but it's still nice to watch it after over20 years.
The lyrics are straightforward but like most videos I think it adds some confusion as it's the interpretation of the director. The actual lyrics are about infidelity and the basically the man saying the loss of their love/marriage is "no sacrifice" as nothing of value is lost & they're "two hearts living in two separate worlds". Not a happy song by any means. It's a great lyric, and one Bernie Taupin's favorite songs.
@SleepingWithThePast , Well, I think at least in the video, the singer is singing this to his mistress, When the song goes:"When the scent of her lingers" it shows the woman's face.and then again when it goes"sweet deceits comes calling" it shows the lady coming down the stairs.the man is at his home rocking the baby's crib but thinking about his lover.We never see her at the man's home.She is always in man's art studio (he is a artist)as if they are living together secretly.
@SleepingWithThePast ,(continued) when the song goes"no tears to damn you when jealousy burns"it reflects the mistress jealously toward what the man has with his family and well she leaves him heartbroken. their affair is ended, but he simply can't forget about her, as we see he keeps writing to her and thinking about her.
@SleepingWithThePast , the ending scene is amazing , he could be dancing with this woman but is dancing with his little girl:he sacrificed his love for that woman for his daughter's happiness.what do you think?
@SleepingWithThePast , i'm aware of the context of the lyrics. it's complicated as it is.why the video would make it even more confusing.?I mean OK, If the lost of the marriage is because of man's infidelity, Why would the wife(if we assume she is his wife and not his mistress) leave her baby behind? Nothing in the video matches your interpretation of the song. what's your interpretation of the video anyway? out of curiosity.
I'm just saying the video isn't totally inline with the context of the song. The video's always been a little unclear in who did what. It would seem in the video the woman is the one left & the guy continually tries to show his affection to her who rejects him. I'm just saying that the video is more optimistic than the actual song which I think creates a false impression of what the song is about. The song makes the man more righteous about the distance they share emotionally.
@SleepingWithThePast , so are you suggesting the guy cheated on his wife and now is regretting it and wants her back? It really doesn't make sense.Again if she is his wife(which i'm not sure of it anymore) then why would she leave her baby?and again ending up in a lavish lifestyle and more importantly looking quite attractive(it's not very common that guys cheat on their attractive wives and then regretting it you know)please tell me what do you think?
I just think that in a song about marriage that they would show the wife not just a mistress. Did he cheat or was it her? I don't know...my interest is more in the actual lyrics.
Like I said, the video is more of a question than the song. I don't think she is a mistress as the song is about the breakup of an marriage & the context is the husband speaking to the wife. So including a mistress as a primary character doesn't support the lyric...I'd be interested in hearing what Alek Keshishian's (the director) approach was. The lyrics are speaking husband to wife & were written at the end of Elton's marriage to Renate & Bernie divorced a few years after.
@SleepingWithThePast ,l'm not saying The husband is necessarily talking to his mistress in the song. Just saying the video is from the point of view of a married man who is in love with this woman,but since he has a baby in trapped in a loveless marriage so she leaves him.even if i'm wrong and you are right(which i highly doubt) and she is the wife,then why she on earth would leave her baby behind?if you answer this question, then i'll surrender.otherwise, she is Not the wife/mom.
In regards to the video, I really don't have the script & intention down. I can't explain why she would abandon a child but again if she the was a mistress it would be better supported if we see the guy, child, and another women/ his wife living their happy life. The problem is that we only see one couple and a baby I think it's safe to assume the child is theirs...can I 100% explain her motivations for leaving? No, but it's based on what we see in the video.
@SleepingWithThePast , again,that's because you have a very conventional approach.and this NOT a conventional video by any means. even the lady's face isn't all American but more of a exotic beauty. and again, as i said this is not a a every day happily married man.It doesn't show his wife simply because he doesn't have any feeling toward the wife .It show the ones he loves:his lover and his little girl. these are the one's that he dances with, and dance=love
Here's the best I can do...and again, I never really had a solid view of the video since the first time I saw it years ago. I'm going to see if I can some definitive answers as I run a Sleeping with the Past site & this video would be part of the research. My guess was this was put together pretty quick as this is the 2nd video (1st was rejected). Maybe as I clarify that we'll get some explanation & I'll gladly provide it.
If you don't own the album Sacrifice was on (Sleeping with the Past), I recommend you get it. You won't be disappointed! This is also for any one else out there. I've compiled lots of information on all the tracks on the album (including Sacrifice - all time favorite song) which will become a fan web site in the somewhat near future. Also, if anyone wants to see a GREAT (if not the best) live version of this song, I link to it in my channel "SACRIFICE" ARSENIO HALL SHOW.
@SleepingWithThePast,Well, i'm new here. as far as the song i have to say it's brilliant. as for the video, it's very confusing,however one thing is obvious,it's her that has done him wrong.the huge clue is where he is tearing her letter down angrily at 2:50.she always looks so distanced while by his expressions you can tell how heartbroken he is.always lonely and depressed.
@SleepingWithThePast ,and after she left him and the baby, the video keeps emphasizing on the HUGE difference between their lifestyle. while he and the little girl are in a tiny apartment she lives in a mansion.gives you a impression that she left him for money.What's your opinion?
@SleepingWithThePast , i suggest you watch the video a few more times.i really don't wanna repeat myself but when the song goes"when the scent of her lingers" it show HER dancing with him(he is recalling their romantic moments),and again you never see her with the baby or in the man's home,she is always with the man in his art studio......just watch it again.
@SleepingWithThePast ,This is probably one the most confusing music videos even made, is full of contradictions and doesn't seem to support the lyrics.looks like the director changed his approach to the song during making this frequently.Everything seem vague and leaves so many questions to the viewer..If you get a hold of the director let me know.
@2000mscalifornia , but ultimately,at least based on the what we see, the wife is to blame for ending the marriage,after all she is the one who leaves not only the husband but her baby behind apparently to pursue her own goals and again the husband is the one who is wounding and enduring a painful breakup, she seems pretty content with her post break up situation even though based on her expressions a little guilty for leaving them.but probably i'm not getting the story right.
Not sure if I can get a hold of the director but maybe someone involved. I'll do what I can & the SWTP album is all I research so it's very defined approach. As with any music video, there's a part of artistic freedom in terms of interpreting it & what we have with the daughter is probably more endearing if we had a cheating husband with a cold heart to his marriage.
@SleepingWithThePast , Well, I don't see the husband (in the video) having a cold heart to his marriage.He seems pretty passionate about he(recalling their past romantic memories) and while she is gone .I get a feeling that the video just turned the table to the wife.I don't know, i always felt sorry for the husband and little girl and hated the woman for leaving them.
@SleepingWithThePast ,(continued) again, it just doesn't make sense, the wifenot only leaving the man and baby behind, but ending up looking sexy in a very glamorous lifestyle?????????
My interpretation of the song: He (a married man) is having a love affair with this woman (you don't see her with the baby, so she is not the mother). She wants to finish this and leaves him. It's not a sacrifice to give up such a relationship for family. He could be dancing with this beautiful woman at the end of the video but is dancing with his daughter instead.....Love for love...
@alpha20003 We don't care about your personal life. GET OVER IT. Next time, LEARN HOW TO CHOOSE A WOMAN FOR WIFE. You are the only one to blame here.
@TheLovemusic73 Don't watch the video so much, who knows WHO made this video. Listen to the lyrics and the major key of the music. It's, against all odds, a song of hope, I feel :-)
@soultotheuniverse ,Well, i know for sure that Bernie Taupin wrote this after his third divorce.second, last time i checked they make the OFFICIAL music video based on the song. It's not like someone grabbed the camera and just shot some random stuffs out of nowhere.but then again it's not a surface song ,Everyone have their own take on it, probably based on their our experience.but the part"it's two hearts living in two separate worlds" definitely is pretty final:It's over.
@soultotheuniverse,agreed,The song is brilliant on it's own,the video is too distracting with it's "old Hollywood"story:a poor guy having his heart broken over a femme fatale, while the lyrics suggest they are both to blame.amazing song.timeless.
It's a song of reconciliation between two parties who have somehow wronged EACH OTHER (mutual misunderstanding), and now, because their "sensitivity", i.e. pride (sensitively said, haha) builds a "prison" for them because they cannot put it aside and admit their actual love for each other, they lose direction, no stone unturned, with not even tears to give their real feelings away because of their unfolding jealousy ... (to be continued)
@soultotheuniverse (continued from previous comment) And that's why the singer sings: cold, cold heart, hard done by you, something things may be better just passing through, but it's NO SACRIFICE to put pride aside - it takes but a simple word (yes). It IS two hearts living in two separate worlds right now (what AMAZING lyrics, no?), but, to reunite through a simple word, it's no sacrifice (to put aside pride) at all.
@soultotheuniverse I personally don't believe it's about reuniting.in contrary,it's a very dark song about a man who is deeply wounded by his wife/lover and is trying to move on.so when it goes:it's two heats living in two separate world, refers to the fact that they are done as a couple, the video visualizes this verse perfectly as the couple just don't want the same things.he wants family and she wants fame.I don't think it couldn't portray their differences better than this.
@TheLovemusic73 (continued) so he eventually moves on and realizes they never meant to be together,therefore their separation "is no sacrifice at all"even though they still write to one another(in the video). It's an outstanding song and the lyrics are very open to interpretation based on one's point of view.
Dear friend, if you want to listen to this song again as well as an endless number of love songs I suggest you visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - look for the URL in Google (search Musica para Mimos). Greatest romantic hits of all times!!!
one question... whats elton got on his head? still a legend though :)

@SleepingWithThePast , Well, I think at least in the video, the singer is singing this to his mistress, When the song goes:"When the scent of her lingers" it shows the woman's face.and then again when it goes"sweet deceits comes calling" it shows the lady coming down the stairs.the man is at his home rocking the baby's crib but thinking about his lover.We never see her at the man's home.She is always in man's art studio (he is a artist)as if they are living together secretly.
alendelarenta70 5 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast ,(continued) when the song goes"no tears to damn you when jealousy burns"it reflects the mistress jealously toward what the man has with his family and well she leaves him heartbroken. their affair is ended, but he simply can't forget about her, as we see he keeps writing to her and thinking about her.
alendelarenta70 5 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , the ending scene is amazing , he could be dancing with this woman but is dancing with his little girl:he sacrificed his love for that woman for his daughter's happiness.what do you think?
alendelarenta70 5 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , i'm aware of the context of the lyrics. it's complicated as it is.why the video would make it even more confusing.?I mean OK, If the lost of the marriage is because of man's infidelity, Why would the wife(if we assume she is his wife and not his mistress) leave her baby behind? Nothing in the video matches your interpretation of the song. what's your interpretation of the video anyway? out of curiosity.
TheLovemusic73 5 days ago
@TheLovemusic73
SleepingWithThePast 5 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , so are you suggesting the guy cheated on his wife and now is regretting it and wants her back? It really doesn't make sense.Again if she is his wife(which i'm not sure of it anymore) then why would she leave her baby?and again ending up in a lavish lifestyle and more importantly looking quite attractive(it's not very common that guys cheat on their attractive wives and then regretting it you know)please tell me what do you think?
TheLovemusic73 5 days ago
@TheLovemusic73
I just think that in a song about marriage that they would show the wife not just a mistress. Did he cheat or was it her? I don't know...my interest is more in the actual lyrics.
SleepingWithThePast 5 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , you simply don't get the video because it unconventional ,far from typical Western/American standard.
alendelarenta70 4 days ago
@alendelarenta70
SleepingWithThePast 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast ,l'm not saying The husband is necessarily talking to his mistress in the song. Just saying the video is from the point of view of a married man who is in love with this woman,but since he has a baby in trapped in a loveless marriage so she leaves him.even if i'm wrong and you are right(which i highly doubt) and she is the wife,then why she on earth would leave her baby behind?if you answer this question, then i'll surrender.otherwise, she is Not the wife/mom.
alendelarenta70 4 days ago
@alendelarenta70
SleepingWithThePast 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , again,that's because you have a very conventional approach.and this NOT a conventional video by any means. even the lady's face isn't all American but more of a exotic beauty. and again, as i said this is not a a every day happily married man.It doesn't show his wife simply because he doesn't have any feeling toward the wife .It show the ones he loves:his lover and his little girl. these are the one's that he dances with, and dance=love

@alendelarenta70

@SleepingWithThePast ,who knows. may be some scenes were cut out.maybe the guy had an affair and the baby is the result.(just kidding)
alendelarenta70 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast,Well, i'm new here. as far as the song i have to say it's brilliant. as for the video, it's very confusing,however one thing is obvious,it's her that has done him wrong.the huge clue is where he is tearing her letter down angrily at 2:50.she always looks so distanced while by his expressions you can tell how heartbroken he is.always lonely and depressed.
alpha20003 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast ,and after she left him and the baby, the video keeps emphasizing on the HUGE difference between their lifestyle. while he and the little girl are in a tiny apartment she lives in a mansion.gives you a impression that she left him for money.What's your opinion?
alpha20003 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , why on eath she would....typo
alendelarenta70 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , i suggest you watch the video a few more times.i really don't wanna repeat myself but when the song goes"when the scent of her lingers" it show HER dancing with him(he is recalling their romantic moments),and again you never see her with the baby or in the man's home,she is always with the man in his art studio......just watch it again.
alendelarenta70 4 days ago
@alendelarenta70
I'm pretty sure it's the same room...same corner, same window, same walls. It just changes as it the video progresses.
SleepingWithThePast 4 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast ,This is probably one the most confusing music videos even made, is full of contradictions and doesn't seem to support the lyrics.looks like the director changed his approach to the song during making this frequently.Everything seem vague and leaves so many questions to the viewer..If you get a hold of the director let me know.
2000mscalifornia 3 days ago
@2000mscalifornia , but ultimately,at least based on the what we see, the wife is to blame for ending the marriage,after all she is the one who leaves not only the husband but her baby behind apparently to pursue her own goals and again the husband is the one who is wounding and enduring a painful breakup, she seems pretty content with her post break up situation even though based on her expressions a little guilty for leaving them.but probably i'm not getting the story right.
2000mscalifornia 3 days ago
@2000mscalifornia
SleepingWithThePast 3 days ago
@SleepingWithThePast , Well, I don't see the husband (in the video) having a cold heart to his marriage.He seems pretty passionate about he(recalling their past romantic memories) and while she is gone .I get a feeling that the video just turned the table to the wife.I don't know, i always felt sorry for the husband and little girl and hated the woman for leaving them.

@TheLovemusic73 Don't watch the video so much, who knows WHO made this video. Listen to the lyrics and the major key of the music. It's, against all odds, a song of hope, I feel :-)
soultotheuniverse 1 week ago
@soultotheuniverse ,Well, i know for sure that Bernie Taupin wrote this after his third divorce.second, last time i checked they make the OFFICIAL music video based on the song. It's not like someone grabbed the camera and just shot some random stuffs out of nowhere.but then again it's not a surface song ,Everyone have their own take on it, probably based on their our experience.but the part"it's two hearts living in two separate worlds" definitely is pretty final:It's over.
TheLovemusic73 1 week ago
@soultotheuniverse,agreed,The song is brilliant on it's own,the video is too distracting with it's "old Hollywood"story:a poor guy having his heart broken over a femme fatale, while the lyrics suggest they are both to blame.amazing song.timeless.
chrisstudio68 1 week ago
It's a song of reconciliation between two parties who have somehow wronged EACH OTHER (mutual misunderstanding), and now, because their "sensitivity", i.e. pride (sensitively said, haha) builds a "prison" for them because they cannot put it aside and admit their actual love for each other, they lose direction, no stone unturned, with not even tears to give their real feelings away because of their unfolding jealousy ... (to be continued)
soultotheuniverse 1 week ago
@soultotheuniverse (continued from previous comment) And that's why the singer sings: cold, cold heart, hard done by you, something things may be better just passing through, but it's NO SACRIFICE to put pride aside - it takes but a simple word (yes). It IS two hearts living in two separate worlds right now (what AMAZING lyrics, no?), but, to reunite through a simple word, it's no sacrifice (to put aside pride) at all.
soultotheuniverse 1 week ago

TheLovemusic73 1 week ago
@soultotheuniverse I personally don't believe it's about reuniting.in contrary,it's a very dark song about a man who is deeply wounded by his wife/lover and is trying to move on.so when it goes:it's two heats living in two separate world, refers to the fact that they are done as a couple, the video visualizes this verse perfectly as the couple just don't want the same things.he wants family and she wants fame.I don't think it couldn't portray their differences better than this.
TheLovemusic73 1 week ago
@TheLovemusic73 (continued) so he eventually moves on and realizes they never meant to be together,therefore their separation "is no sacrifice at all"even though they still write to one another(in the video). It's an outstanding song and the lyrics are very open to interpretation based on one's point of view.
