i guess what he did was he was taking nice easy breaths which helps when something is unplesant i always take a nice easy breath of nitrous at the dentist when i know its going to be a rough procedure but its easier to focus on your breathing and try to relax as much as possible
You don't have to go that slow do you cause that's taking quite a bit of time, but kudos to the guy playing PT, I would want to know how it feels since I'm suppose to be doing it on others but if it's not required then... Haha
Kudos to that guy for being so patient and still! Might be a little slow with the insertion, but keep in mind it's probably his first time... good job
@hotzelj he was not unconscious, and kudos to that guy im an EMT myself and ive seen many people attempt them on themselves... usually a hilarious fail
You CAN always try, like you said, and it fails often. Just recall any ER with a trauma intubation - they have at least 5 people on them all fighting to pin the patient to the bed when they try it. It doesn't go very well in conscious people. It is interesting to see that the way classes are run vary from place to place - even within a state.
I think he went somewhere else in his mind like climbing a mountain somewhere! I cant really tell you why he didnt have a problem with it. He told us it was very uncomfortable.. Maybe it was just mind over matter? I dont think the guy holding his head had anything to do with it other than keeping him aligned since there was no head rest on the chair.. Gotta give alot of credit for this act.. Most people dont get that far, and they have tears streaming down their face..
the guy holding his head is using the jaw thrust technique which opens the airway. it helps the NPA go in, as opposed to telling him to cough or stick out his tongue. tried it on someone and they almost threw up, so im still surprised that he can handle having it in.
No! You dont HAVE to go thru this to become an EMT.. The day of class, we were just going over the finer points, and as Lizerini stated, the "goofball" wanted to try it! He wanted to know what it was like, so that when he had to do this on a patient, he would know what it felt like.. Not something I ever wanted to try, but he was a trooper, and pretty game for trying it... So brownie points for Beau!
Well, for starters, he is not a patient. He is a student, and he chose the nostril that was most comfortable for him, being that he is conscious and all...
I had it done to me in my EMT class. My instructor jokingly asked if anyone wanted to try it, and me being a glutton for punishment volunteered. I can imagine it would hurt more if it wasn't lubed up enough, but it is SOOOO wierd! It's like having a super stuffy nose that goes all the way down your throat, but a little worse than that. It's hard to describe. You really just have to try it.
So what, no eyes watering? Cause I was watching while this was being done (well, duh, I'm filming it!), and it just looked downright painful.. okay, at least VERY uncomfortable...
Yeah, my eyes were watering, and I felt a little pressure, but it wasn't exactly pain. One of the most uncomfortable things ever, other than the time I got pepper sprayed.
The NPA is to keep an airway open during emergency situations. The is also an OPA which is thru the mouth (but gag reflex could hinder that!)... Everyone in our EMT class has to learn how to insert each of these as part of their training. We dont usually use real people for the training of this, but we had some students who wanted to know what it was like. This was the only guy who could handle it, due to the fact that it isnt very comfortable. Glad we caught it on tape!!!
just wanted to let you all know you guys at Pierce County Fire are awsome...you have come out on a call for me and everyone was very professional and helpful...Thanks All!
We usually use a mannequin as well, but this student wanted to know what it felt like. When the eyes start to water, you know it cant feel all that great! Ouch! But this guy was a trooper! Way to go, huh?
your putting it into his sinuses lol..try a downward angle and you will have alot better results.

He's not a wuss, its really not that bad.
medbill 2 years ago
You're really not supposed to be doing that on a live patient in class.
hotzelj 2 years ago
@hotzelj Thats not as bad as trying to nasaly intubate a fellow classmate. Woke up before we advanced the tube too far though.
AThiker07 2 years ago
He was out (unconscious) when you started to pass it through?
hotzelj 2 years ago
he was sleeping...though he's a heavy sleeper. We got the balloon maybe 3 cm past the nostril before he woke up.
AThiker07 2 years ago
We had a sleeper in our class, but all we did was make him be the dummy for demonstrations.

i've watched a few people go through this on youtube now... but he's not screaming or wincing or anything.
either he's not complaining because he asked for it, or the guy holding his head is really helping somehow. i haven't seen it on other videos.

shadddey5 2 years ago
Oh my gosh! They do that????
esargirl 2 years ago
yea i know if you want to use the tazer on the "field" than you have to get tazed...
shadddey5 2 years ago
So you have to BE zapped in order to DO the zapping? Thats funny! But kindof cool, too... I never knew!

Okay, does someone want to explain to me why the NPA is in the patients LEFT nostril? (When it should be in the RIGHT !?!)
Bohdan00 3 years ago
Well, for starters, he is not a patient. He is a student, and he chose the nostril that was most comfortable for him, being that he is conscious and all...
esargirl 3 years ago
And it's possible that the NPA would not fit up his right nostril. Some people do have bigger left nostrils. That can not be comfortable though.
battnet 3 years ago
Hahaha, you should intubate him for his next trick....with a combi-tube, hahaha.
