You know, I love the concept of this... but what advantages (besides being wireless) does this have over simply running an HDMI cable from your laptop to your TV?
If I have friends over and want to watch videos or game on the TV, I just hook the HDMI up and in 2 seconds it's good to go... 1920x1080 and all.
Dell ST2420L 24" Full HD Widescreen Monitor with LED is the add on u can get when building the m17x r3, is this the tv u r usinq ur video or is it another brand?
Hey cool video :) Is it possible to have multi-screen display? Like can I play a movie on the TV, and browse the web on my laptop at the same time? Thanks!
@Jet562 Sorry for delay. No it doesn't overheat. I have never had overheating issues. It seems to be vented extremely well. Now blocking those vents would probably do it but I'm not gonna test that to find out ;)
@hamza4666 Hello there. They have always offered the wireless hd bundle. That's what we were talking about earlier. If you do the $99 option they just put the chip in your laptop and buy the receiver seperately. Or you can get the bundle deal that comes with Vizio's version of the receiver and a transmitter that you can use to connect other devices up to away from the TV.
The way I understand this is that the $99 wireless HD option requires an external Transmitter right? Is there a particular option that makes sense for this? Is the internal option the WiHD option? So many acronyms to remember.
The internal solution just doesn't seem as well documented so its a little confusion as to what exactly you need to make it all work.
Thanks for the awesome videos btw! By far the best on this laptop.
@RoboCNC Hey there. The $99 wirelesshd option is to put the chip inside your laptop. The chip is required to use the wirelesshd option so you have to at least get that. An external adapter is only required if you television doesn't support wirelesshd. If it did you would probably already know as you would see it be a major feature. The option that Alienware offers is just that an option. You can search online for other adapters as well. Hope this helps.
hey Quinope this is a very important question for me, but how could you setup WiHD for automated connection? My alienware m18x with WiHD worked perfectly until one moment my m18x crashed and turns out the WiHD caused the crash. before the crash my WiHD reciever used to connect immediately to my laptop as soon as I got to the login user screen after you start up the laptop..after the crash it wont display anything until I manually go inside WiHD and click connect and wait 10 mins for it to work
@tripleguy031 Hey boss sorry about the crash but it seems from what you described that yes the WiHD was causing the crash. It isn't designed to automatically connect when you turn on your computer. It has always been a manual connection for me and everyone else. If yours was doing that then it wasn't supposed to and is working correctly now that you have to go inside and click connect. As far as I know there is no way to go automated. Sorry about that man. Hit me up if you have more issues.
@tripleguy031 On another note the waiting 10 minutes to connect isn't normal and you may have a faulty receiver or transmitter. Either of which can be replaced. My initial WiHD unit was also faulty and I had to have it replaced. Which was very painless and it was overnighted to me.
Thanks for the great review! I've got some questions about your setup.
So the blueray player is using and external transmitter and the laptop is using the internal transmitter, and they're both transmitting to the same receiver on the tv? Is the receiver on your tv external as well?
Is it possible to have a dual monitor setup instead of mirroring the screen with the internal transmitter on the card?
@greatbigphil Thank you. The transmitter (they call it a receiver) is external and is sitting under the tv on the left side. I think I did a close up on it. A few tvs have them built in but in this setup its not needed b/c you have it. Yes you can use your tv in dual monitor setup. Just go into the resolution settings and switch "multiple displays" from duplicate to extend these displays. Then move them around to which ever side you want to extend to.
@Quinope Would my tv be able to read the progressive footage from the wireless hd and display it in a converted interlace form, or would it be fine showing the progressive footage?
@aidanzilla Yes your tv will automatically use the best available on it. If that's 1080i then it will automatically use that. You won't have to change anything on your tv. The only issue is if your tv only uses 720 or lower then you may have an issue. Just change resolution on your laptop and you are set to go. As most people have 1080 tvs or some sort these days you probably won't even notice.
@krazor8 I disagree with you. Its very useful as I use my television as a monitor constantly. Be that for gaming or showing my clients things during meetings. Being able to do that without plugging in every time is priceless to me. Also we wanted to hang the TV over the fireplace but ended up getting the entertainment center bc we didn't want to run anymore cords. This is the perfect solution for that as well. And it gives you four extra 1.4 HDMI ports. So I'm clueless but each his own.
@Quinope i have it on mine and it is a huge rip off... ive used it for presentation and such.. but for the price there are allot cheaper external 1 that work as good if not better...
@MrsKrazor8 well the only other wireless hd solution I know of is WiDi and its nowhere near as good and not 1.4 compatible because I have used it. What other cheaper solutions are you speaking of? Feel free to explain as I have no clue what you are talking about.
@krazor8 okay you're talking apples and oranges here which is fine but unfortunately useless to us as WHDI isn't available on the m17x R3 so not sure how you got one internally on yours? unless you have an asus laptop in which case is also pointless to this conversation as we're talking about alienware. I disagree its far more usefell better or cheaper. but if you want to start a "what will be the standard war" then that's your choice but I refuse to participate because this is irrelevant.
@krazor8 I'm also not quit sure how you can call this technology useless. You do understand what it's doing right? I'm guessing not, because until now there's been NO solution for streaming full HD (including 3d) with HD audio wirelessly. For those who have a home theater (like I do) with a big screen and want to have a full gaming rig experience, that's portable, but can be played through their system without wires all over the place... this thing is a dream. Great job on the video Quin!

My tv is 1080i. If I wanted to stream 1080p content to it would that be a problem?
aidanzilla 9 months ago
@aidanzilla yes the resolution is 1920x1080. The "I" stands for interlaced scan and the "P" for progressive scan. That doesn't affect you resolution.
