I read the book when i was 13, and I'm 21 now. Don't remember much of it, never actually think about the race of the invaders. I do remember well somewhere in the book it mentioned "packing the condoms" or something like that.
i think it was a good idea using asians because you cant really identify if there japanese or korean or chinese etc sotheres no racism or anything, aswell if they used white people. since they could be germans americans french?
I think it's Indonesia - they have an amazingly powerful military and more importantly they're much closer to us then China/Russia etc. Why would either of them attack Australia when they can invade neighbouring countries - it would be quicker and easier. Plus what's the motive-I can't think of any issue we have with Russia and while Sino-Australian relations are at times strained, they rely on Australia as a so called 'Western power' whereas Indonesia and Australia have a history of issues...
@TheKokokiss Thanks :) I mean, I personally think that he was doing a favour to everyone by not revealing the name of the invading country, so that there wouldn't be a huge racial argument. However, that seems to have happened anyway...
If you have seen the movie its pretty obvious that its either China or North Korea since there the only ones with the capabilities to do what they did in the movie. Unless Japan made some sort of suprising comeback
North Korea it has to be we have stable diplomatic connections with japan, south Korea, and a rough connection with china and north Korea is very hostile at the moment so that's my belief.

It's true, the west has treated China very poorly in history and it's not fair to continue to brand them as the bad guy. I'm totally against it, were talking about one of the oldest living ancient civilisations in history. I hope, that the Chinese government realises that it is our politicians that are frightened of them and not the people. They're a great people and we've taken ALOT from them. AUS & USA are newborns in comparison to asia's motherland.
In one of the books, Ellie see's one of the invaders looking at a picture of what she believed to be Switzerland. Can't help but wonder if that was a hint.
@MrPunfag just because germanys reputation and "Honor" were ruined in WW1 and 2, doesnt mean they want revenge on the "worry free" country. face it butthead, why attack a country that couldnt defend ourselves from locusts? its not worth it! what do you gain? a kick up the ass from the US of A? an explosive gift from China? its not a very tactical descision, even if they have the hats for the job.
@HenshinHotties nope, later on in the series they launch war on the occupiers and anyway it is never specified to which country invaded australia cause john marsden wanted to keep the other countries around australia happy

Also, if Australia was invaded by an Asian nation, I don't think it would be totally out of line, or unpopular to use racial epithets or derogatory term towards that country.

I would love to watch this movie, I hope it's out in England, I can't imagine anybody wanting to invade Australia, it's probably one of the most peaceful nations on earth. I dare say however that if such a terrible occurance did happen then Britain would not stand by and allow a fellow commonwealth country to be just invaded by a foreign power. this would most certainly bring the entire commonwealth to war and no nation would want to take on the commonwealth.
@alexandertory The US and the European Union would not take it lightly as well. The rest of the world would also economically condemn the invaders and the invasion would be very, very shortlived. As a Portuguese I would gladly volunteer to help Australia if such an invasion took place.
@jonaspv I'm sure you are quite right, but the likelyness of it happening is very un-likely, I certainly think china wouldn't invade them. China actually in comparison to western nations is quite peaceful, they certainly dont rage war against people
see now Australia is gonna make a better sega then TWILIGHT hahaha this is an incredible story and movie i like it,and it would be china because they are communist i think well they are now,i hope they make more movies of this
Of course the invading force is Asian. Heres why. It is said in the book that the invading force is atempting to invade and colinize Australia because of the vast land it has. This means that some overpopulated nation, aka an Asian nation, has targeted Australia for colinization to make use of its vast land. Plus, an Asian nation is the closest nation and because they are primarily atacking North Quuensland bays during the intial invasion, Townsvill Cobblers Bay ect, then the invading nation
@labartic tops the twilight bullshit,or what ,mate? This flick is so not logical.Iám just writing here to spare people 90 min of their lifetime.Do not see it!Spend that time with your beloved, learn sth useful.Smoke sth funny. But do not waste your time by looking that crap.Aussies can do better
@belneddy wtf dude ur inane. tomorrow when the war began is better than a lot of the other bullshitty movies, and plus, just read the novels theyre good, and if youve seen the movie, u can imagine everything clearly in the series
wow its like the people are trying to get him to say what nation, like we need some where to point a finger or not, war does not need to be wrapped in a race packed, but only for the honor of you're country.
WTF! Then how could Fi not know what language they were speakin even I can recognize Chineese! but Chineese isn't a small country so why would they invade Russia?
well in the book it said they were from are region.... and i belive other then newzeland (who in the book helped us ... and no dout would help us ) there all asian !
Who will have interest to invade Australia????????????????
The book "Tomorrow, When the World Began" was written in the time of cold war. Now, we are in an globalized world. Even North Korea do not have interest to do so.
@applesweeter australia is a continent/country and we only have 22 million people, alot of other countrys hav more people and less space (space as in room for people).
The good thing is if China wants to invade Australia, it needs a sizable navy task force. Its current aircraft carrier projects are still incapable, however if terms of ADF vs PLA. I gotta to say the Australian Defense Force alone cannot hold off the PLA.
@Lukeclout You have to remember Australia is a logistical nightmare if you want to invade it. The reality is even the U.S. would have a hard time to take over Australia... And at the moment Australia is the middle of upgrading it's air force to fifth generation, look up the F-35 Lightning, and no aircraft in China can match that. The F-35 is actually a match for the F-22 Raptor.... Then look at training, and experience. Our SAS is more then a match for any Chinese soldier, and has experience.
@applesweeter I am commenting on a fantasized universe not real life. As I said in real life the USA and UK is responsible for the defence of Australia along with the ADF under several miliarty alliance treaties
Australia is luck to be located at the south of the planet. The world is more internationalized now. Nobody will have interest to invade another anymore.
The real potential enemy will be those terrorists and extremeists in 911, who may invade Australia by a 747 with full of fuel. Do you agree?
This book was written in the 1980s, when the cold war was still a threat to become a nuclear war.
About the terrorists, they may use a Boeing 747 from oversea to hit on tall buildings in Australia. I DO NOT HOPE THAT WILL HAPPEN.
By the way, I do not like John Marsden's books because his books are obsessive. Teenagers like happen and optimistic story, such as "High School Music" by Disney.
By the way, I have a curious question. What will be your opinion for my following statement?
"The world has become more peaceful since 1960's because of the golden age of jet age. The Boeing 747 made intercontential air travel more easier, and brough people closer together. The Boeing 747 encouraged more cultural diversity and more mutual understanding between people from different counrty. We made friends before we fired nuclear missles."
ive read the series about 5 times over because i love it so much and im pretty ure not once does it mention anything about the race of the invaders, seriously thats what i always noticed, he never gives you any hint of who they are. and then some how that guy on the left seems to want to dig into john for portraying them as asian. its the directors of the movie he should be bitching to. and anyways who gives a shit. its FICTION
I reckon there north Koreans. China wouldn't invade Australia because we trade so much with china invading us would shorten the supply of things like wheet. Also all of the western countries would break off all trade with china and they would have hardly any resources. North Korea hates everyone and nobody likes them so why not. But the whole thing of any country invading Australia is absurd as the retaliation from America and the UK would put a very large hole in to that countrys' capital.
i dont think it would matter where they were from. to me they were chinese because that would be the only relatively close nation that would be able to successfully invade a country of the size of australia. In the books it also says the nation is pressuring america not to get involved, once again china or russia would be the only countries powerful enough to pressure the U.S in the way. i guess i added my own realism.
@addy45178 Don't make stuff up...China is not NEAR to being a strong army. Remember WWII? They were defenseless. USA is the strongest army. I could continue but my iPod touch comment limit is low.
omg you people it couldn't have been china and the answer is because in the book the first one that is it said that there army consisted of UNTRAINED and PROFESSIONAL soldiers and it also said that they took the untrained soldiers because they didn't have the numbers. NOW IF IT WAS CHINA they wouldn't need untrained soldiers because they've got the largest population on earth and the strongest army
I have not read the books, but i have seen the movie ( i know, typical) But you get a few good looks at the Invading force. They are definatley of Asian Origin. i Belive it may be the Chinease, because of they're Weapon and Armour Loadout.
(Ak-47's and Elite looking Armour). thats just to answer that question. but you other guys are right, it isnt about who invades, its about how we react.
@TheGemp yeah but china doesn't use the type 56(AK-47) anymore, they use the bullpup something something ,maybe this could be a coalition of red stars (china and russiaand mongolia)
This whole 'thing ' seems stupid to me... Instead of investing in new technologies, fixing the problem of hunger and moving into space-territories we're still talking about war... and "this race" and "that race". Who gives a damn, be on a mission to save the world and make this whole globe a success...
I admire John Marsden for his amazing respect he has for all countries, he never said a bad word toward any country, and the fact that some people look at him and say, "oh he is a racist" it desturbing, becuase he has gone about his touching and insightfull novel with his hearth full of respect...
China is a most likely candiate for an invasion on Australia. Iron ore, coal, uranium, land. China being a rapidily growing economy. Only a matter of time.
This is one movie i will not watch, and i also encourage other Australians to boycott this film. Although John Marsden is Australian and, the film is Australian, the story itself is UNAUSTRALIAN. Moreover, it damages the relations between our neighbours whom we have been with ever since this country manifested itself.
@LLDJ1997 Dude ak's are one of the worlds most common assault rifles, if not the most common, its used by many countries, including russia, ukraine and america
I just saw the movie today, it was the best movie I had ever seen. The invaders are clearly of an Asian background, but I don't think Marsden intended to be racist.
Being proud of your own nation/race is okay. Being prejuduce to others are not, we all have different cultural history but we're all people, unity of all races is what this world needs. Sadly there are still racist people who are selfish and naive to realise the truth.
@maxbiteme I know Tony (the host) seems a bit pushy, but as John says he is used to interviewing politicians, who you have to push pretty hard for a straight answer :)
I think you are forgetting one important point, when I was 17 and picked up 'Tomorrow' just because the titile was interesting, I read three books in one month, more than I had read in five years. Isn't getting kids to read and use their brains the most important point?
Mr Gallop, The teenagers who read Mr Marsdens books don't care about politics. They care about their safety, freedom, music, movies, hair, the environment, university and getting laid. Politics is like tax returns, next year.
they are such dickheads to him:| the guys writing a fucking book he doesnt give two shits about what country invades what and all that boring politics bullshit, its not the point he is illustrating. Like the girl said, did you want him to write about aliens invading just so he doesnt 'hurt anyones feelings'. He had to make a country invade what else did you bloody want him to do! Jeez, give him a break
WTF its a book, apart from the morales and lessons the book represents, i dont see what a fictional book where the invaders are not even confirmed! them going on how China could invade australia, its not even bloody relevent, its a story about the important part, how these teenagers deal with the situation around them, as Australians, hey im even sure NZ wouldn't be to different, same thing They help us ...we help them, (God bless the SAS, Aus NZ and UK) (yer im aussie but is that important)
@gantid he isn't giving any shit out dude he made a big point of not giving the invaders an ethnicity and they should respect his wishes instead of going waaay overboard in trying to make it a political, racial statement when it isn't
@megamullet9 Obviously you cant read because he was the one who said " id fuck you up in real life faggot" so pretty sure that entitles me to an opinion and a nasty response. just butt out of it
@gantid my original comment was about the video, not about you commenting on some random dudes post. next time you want to be a cock, make sure you know why. douche
Jezz give the guy a break. Is it me or do they want to talk politics and not fiction. I will laugh my socks of if they mak ethe invading force British
I read the book when i was 13, and I'm 21 now. Don't remember much of it, never actually think about the race of the invaders. I do remember well somewhere in the book it mentioned "packing the condoms" or something like that.

Lets look at this from a military prespective.
What do we know about the invaders.
A. They have Aircraft Carriers.
B. They have the power to pressure the USA.
Only two nations (That can possibly be hostile to Australia) have that power to pressure the USA.
Russia and China.
China do´s not have Carriers yet and Russia do´s not use the weapons in the book.
so the invading nation is likely a make belive one.

@NiklasFranGoteborg Actually China has a full size plus Navy with carriers. Just Google.

China have however purchase´t a number of inactive carriers for study, but they will not be refitted for combat.

I recommend you check out another Aussie author: John Birmingham. His latest trilogy begins with the destruction of the entire US. Many who follow the books he writes cannot determine whether he's a righty or a lefty, though overall he's very pro-America, and shows a dark picture of the world without that nation.

I would love to watch this movie, I hope it's out in England, I can't imagine anybody wanting to invade Australia, it's probably one of the most peaceful nations on earth. I dare say however that if such a terrible occurance did happen then Britain would not stand by and allow a fellow commonwealth country to be just invaded by a foreign power. this would most certainly bring the entire commonwealth to war and no nation would want to take on the commonwealth.
alexandertory 1 year ago
@alexandertory The US and the European Union would not take it lightly as well. The rest of the world would also economically condemn the invaders and the invasion would be very, very shortlived. As a Portuguese I would gladly volunteer to help Australia if such an invasion took place.
jonaspv 1 year ago
@jonaspv I'm sure you are quite right, but the likelyness of it happening is very un-likely, I certainly think china wouldn't invade them. China actually in comparison to western nations is quite peaceful, they certainly dont rage war against people

Possible threat:
1. China. The whole military package.
2. Indonesia. Close by. Big number of military personnel however lowest grade military arsenal and low capability to send AF across the sea.
3. East Timor and New Zealand combined lol.
4. North Korea. Crazy enough, Dare enough but never ceased attention to it's southern brother.
4. Japan. Maybe, but will it repeats the same failure during WW2 ?
5. U.S. Whole military package, but wtf ?
6. Other asian nations......made money from Australia.

mr marsden let me help you. the answer is a russian backed north korea.
TheSteampunkdude 1 year ago
Of course the invading force is Asian. Heres why. It is said in the book that the invading force is atempting to invade and colinize Australia because of the vast land it has. This means that some overpopulated nation, aka an Asian nation, has targeted Australia for colinization to make use of its vast land. Plus, an Asian nation is the closest nation and because they are primarily atacking North Quuensland bays during the intial invasion, Townsvill Cobblers Bay ect, then the invading nation

Who will have interest to invade Australia????????????????
The book "Tomorrow, When the World Began" was written in the time of cold war. Now, we are in an globalized world. Even North Korea do not have interest to do so.

applesweeter 1 year ago
@applesweeter australia is a continent/country and we only have 22 million people, alot of other countrys hav more people and less space (space as in room for people).
TheJimzo 1 year ago
The good thing is if China wants to invade Australia, it needs a sizable navy task force. Its current aircraft carrier projects are still incapable, however if terms of ADF vs PLA. I gotta to say the Australian Defense Force alone cannot hold off the PLA.
Lukeclout 1 year ago
@Lukeclout You have to remember Australia is a logistical nightmare if you want to invade it. The reality is even the U.S. would have a hard time to take over Australia... And at the moment Australia is the middle of upgrading it's air force to fifth generation, look up the F-35 Lightning, and no aircraft in China can match that. The F-35 is actually a match for the F-22 Raptor.... Then look at training, and experience. Our SAS is more then a match for any Chinese soldier, and has experience.

Why do China want to invade Australia????
applesweeter 1 year ago
@applesweeter I am commenting on a fantasized universe not real life. As I said in real life the USA and UK is responsible for the defence of Australia along with the ADF under several miliarty alliance treaties
Lukeclout 1 year ago
@Lukeclout
I agree with you.
Australia is luck to be located at the south of the planet. The world is more internationalized now. Nobody will have interest to invade another anymore.
The real potential enemy will be those terrorists and extremeists in 911, who may invade Australia by a 747 with full of fuel. Do you agree?
(I do not hope that 911 will happen in Asutralia)
applesweeter 1 year ago
@applesweeter terrorism is known as threat from within
Lukeclout 1 year ago
@Lukeclout
Teenagers like happen and optimistic story, such as "High School Music" by Disney.
applesweeter 1 year ago
@applesweeter what if i told you that the real 911 terrorists came from within the nation....not saying thery did but what if?
ClintsFitness 10 months ago
@Lukeclout
HOPE MY QUESTION IS INTERESTING!!

I reckon there north Koreans. China wouldn't invade Australia because we trade so much with china invading us would shorten the supply of things like wheet. Also all of the western countries would break off all trade with china and they would have hardly any resources. North Korea hates everyone and nobody likes them so why not. But the whole thing of any country invading Australia is absurd as the retaliation from America and the UK would put a very large hole in to that countrys' capital.
manzy1435 1 year ago
i dont think it would matter where they were from. to me they were chinese because that would be the only relatively close nation that would be able to successfully invade a country of the size of australia. In the books it also says the nation is pressuring america not to get involved, once again china or russia would be the only countries powerful enough to pressure the U.S in the way. i guess i added my own realism.

(Ak-47's and Elite looking Armour). thats just to answer that question. but you other guys are right, it isnt about who invades, its about how we react.

I admire John Marsden for his amazing respect he has for all countries, he never said a bad word toward any country, and the fact that some people look at him and say, "oh he is a racist" it desturbing, becuase he has gone about his touching and insightfull novel with his hearth full of respect...

Moreover, it damages the relations between our neighbours whom we have been with ever since this country manifested itself.

Being proud of your own nation/race is okay. Being prejuduce to others are not, we all have different cultural history but we're all people, unity of all races is what this world needs. Sadly there are still racist people who are selfish and naive to realise the truth.

Mr Gallop, The teenagers who read Mr Marsdens books don't care about politics. They care about their safety, freedom, music, movies, hair, the environment, university and getting laid. Politics is like tax returns, next year.
