This is one of my favorite recordings of Galli-Curci's, although certain critics have stated the interpretation is too tepid. However, the tonal beauty, utterly equalized vocal registers, perfect legato, excellent trills (not always found in her records) and other vocal feats, clear diction, and elegant French style and charm are all captured to perfection. And it has a certain wistfulness that foreshadows the tragedy of Manon Lescaut that will soon unfold.
I heartily agree with your list of this recording's merits! The trill from 2:13-2:16 is perfect-- each note is distinct, the alternation between the pitches is even, and the little turn at the end elegantly caps it off.
You mentioned her legato (which is wonderful), and I would like to add that her lighter, more separate notes are also fantastic. Thank you for sending this to me, meltzerboy, and thank you, eblackadder3, for posting!
@meltzerboy She also sets the gavotte rhythm perfectly, with a grace and elegance unique in my experience. The slight rallentandi at the end of each verse are full of romance and simply enchanting. Her use of portamento is an object lesson. This is one of her greatest disks.
@AulicExclusiva Galli-Curci did not sing Manon very often, but she must have been delightful in the role, as Lauri-Volpi points out. I may be wrong, but I believe Melba also sang the role; unfortunately, she left no recordings.
