This is sooooo telling. After James left the show, it was never the same. I rarely ever watchs the episodes to this day if he's not in them. Not out of protest, but because his charactor was so vital to the family dynamic. To me personally, the show went downhill after that.
I know that race don't make no difference. But, I'm white and I LOVED the show "GOOD TIMES". They was funny and still is. It's said that the white mans wrote the scripts. But, ya know? WhAtEvEr! I don't care if they was PURPLE WITH GREEN POLKA-DOTS. It was all good! Florida-girl, Michael and Thelma was my fave characters.
Damn. Damn. Damn. Seriously. John Amos' character was extremely needed on TV in this day and age. He was the perfect representation of what a STRONG father figure should be and he didn't take no mess. I remember seeing this episode as a child and truly feeling scared. Man, it felt so real. Still does today, especially knowing the undercurrents of what was going on behind the scenes.
This show will never grow old for me. As a kid the exact same age as Michael Evans (Ralph Carter) this is what i had to relate to and it brought alot and i do mean a lot of joy to me to be in front ov the tv and identify with the people on this show. In those days we Blacks didn't have alot to look up to and this was our show....it was for us. John Amos was the truest 'Model" of what a real Black dad carries himself like. I am especially proud that he never abandoned his family....until he died.
The story around John Amos' exit from "Good Times" is an indictment of Hollywood and mass media media. Amos' and Esther Rolle's criticism of the stereotypical JJ character made perfect sense, yet speaking out too forcefully resulted in the producers kicking Amos off the show. Amos was punished for rightfully rejecting racist stereotyping.
How many actors today would have the courage to stand up the way Amos and Rolle did? Not many, I'm sure.
John Amos just got tired of everything revolving around Jimmie Walker's character, JJ. Esther Rolle would also leave for similar reasons. She felt that JJ was a bad role model for kids. All you have to do is stand on the corner, clap your hands once and shout DYN-O-MITE! and you would be rich. When Michael got into trouble for joy-riding, JJ grounded him. He later expressed remorse at not being a better role model for his "baby brother."
Forgot to mention. I work for the State of New Jersey and met John Amos at Motor Vehicle. What a great man and very personable! We talked about "GOOD TIMES" for 20 minutes!!!!
This episode always makes me cry. James Evans was a very strong family man who showed so much love for his family. Losing that character was a mistake!
This character showed even when you struggle, you stick together as a family.
@madfran6 Yep, they wanted Mr. Brady to be the proper role model for everyone. Nothing personal against the Brady Bunch cause I like that show , too. But, there is positive men (and women ) in all races and it appears that they didnt want to keep that image for Good Times.

My wife actually got me to start watching the show, and it was JAMES EVANS, and his trials in trying to raise and provide for his family that got me to love the show.

@satyricon55 He is Hiv+ .. I read it and I actually called the hospital he was in many years ago and he was indeed a patient.. When he came to the phone I politely hung up..
@blewpaint Really. It was rumored back in the 1990s, and another rumor that he died from it but for of course that was a rumor because this video gives evidence.
Really now!..Who cares if this man is Straight or gay?....It would have made some damn good TV.tho!...Imagine having too tell James evans Sr. ur Gay!..Bad for Michael Good for Ratings!
For the first 13 years of my life, I never knew who my father was until six months before his demise. James Evans, Senior was the first father figure I will always admire. He showed courage, strength and intergrity throughout his time on "Good Times". It was ashame that the quality of the show faltered after he was written off. Long Live James Evans, Senior!!!
I was just a little girl when "Good Times" was on and I have loved this show ever since. Ralph Carter has his own demons he is fighting and whether he is gay or what have you- it doesn't take away from the fact that he deserves our respect! I pray that where ever he is in life he is happy & healthy.
Yes, I always wondered why they got rid of the father. 30 plus years later it all makes sense. They can't show family unity, a mother and a father? That might give people ideas. Ohhhhh, we suppose to stay together and support one another. No, no.no, can't have that...get rid of the father. Make the mother, suffer and struggle. Yes! That's it! The new black american family.
Thank you tv for showing Good Times again I was born two years after it started but would see the repeat showing of it growing up and to this day. Esther Rolle was right not to play into the stereotype of a ghetto family . And it became a big hit.
Yes I felt the same way they all felt when the strong father figure wasn't there anymore! It was the beginning of Good Times end when James died. I met John Amos in LA and he was one cool brotha. I appreciate and loved the whole cast who all brought greatness to the show! Miss it and so glad I have the collection!
I loved this episode and I always felt when she said the famous line DAMN DAMN DAMN she was saying that about the way things were with show and behind the scenes
@shewstring2000 but i watch and I dont think that the writing was foolish, of course there was buffoonery...also on here (I guess the rest of the cast didnt know he quit) both Rolle and Amos 'complained"
if one was to think about it, IN REALITY, you dont get a death notice in a letter (or was it a telegram) you get it in a phone call.
Good Times was definitely a different - and, for me, a less entertaining - show without Amos. He's what attracted me to the show as a kid because James Sr. was so much like my own father. I wish these two would've addressed the 2 stories that are told concerning Amos' departure. The first: he quit b/c he didn't like how the popularity of the JJ character was eclipsing the others and even the show itself. The other: he was fired by Lear for complaining about the show's use of sterotypes.
Goddamn Bernadette stay fine. She could still get it, with her overly Christian ass. I don't know whether Ralph Carter is really gay but I'm not sure if even that would stop you from wanting her. Thelma was so sexy I bet she could make a gay man temporarily reconsider.
I really enjoyed this, them sharing their feelings and insight about that episode.
I was little when Good Times was originally on the air, and due to the fact I grew up in Houston, one of the cities which removed the show from its schedule, I became better acquainted with it in reruns over the years.
It remains one of my all-time favorite shows, and one of the very best.
JOIN THE "BERN NADETTE STANIS DANCING WITH THE STARS SUPPORT PAGE" ON FACEBOOK. JUST SEARCH THE PHRASE ABOVE AND TELL A FRIEND TO TELL A FRIEND! LETS GO THELMA!!!!
He seems like a wonderful person and so does Bern Nadette. They look wonderful. You know, you need to look within your soul and ask yourself why you want to speculate about someones private life and call them hurtful names. You would be far better suited to take that energy and direct it at fixing whats wrong in your life. There is something so very wrong with your life to say the horrible things you have said. You know who you are.
I am a white male in my early 30's. I was born when this show was at it's height. I did not see it until many years after it's original run. I have to say it is one of my favorite shows of all time if not my favorite. This show is about hard struggles in life and keeping your faith and realizing what is truly important, family and loved ones and supporting each other. It is very sad to see some of the comments on here about Ralph. What purpose does it serve to tare someone down? It is sad
@free2drm I agree. They should never do that because the old saying goes, "If you can't say something good about somebody then don't say something bad." They will just be wasting their time and energy on this site. Therefore, I will say, the man is beautiful inside and out and very talented. He has contributed greatly to American theater. So, we should love and be proud of him, and overlook any negativity we read.
All of you all kill me, just because he speaks like he has SENSE and is not always sayin yo yo yo and nah mean he gotta be gay? just ignorance and stupidity on your part!
@DungVids what the FUCK does straight mean anyway nowadays. SHIT so many "pussy-lovin ass niggas nowadays have turned in metrosexuals u can't say shit about him being gay, you fucked up twat. If being intelligent and articulate with your vocabulary and grammar is gay, then more people should be...because apparently you've changed the definition of the word.
So many sitcom "moments" are exaggerated all beyond proportion, especially in retrospect when people from these shows are being interviewed...
The power of that "Good Times" moment when Florida finally breaks is actually one of the most affecting moments in TV history; what an amazing actress Ms. Rolle was!
@AgentRaven77: That is exactly why they took John Amos off the air because he did represent too much of a strong image and that is not how they wanted to show a blk man. I use to ask myself when i was a little boy watching the show, why couldn't he get a good job and move his family to better a area? Now i know that the racist writers wanted to show him as always down and out because they knew he had a large following. It was by design that John Amos was written off the show, trust me on that.
Jackass producers. We lost the character of James so that they could give us more of the clownish J.J. antics. Jackass producers, and that includes Norman Lear.
@macjunior3 no actually I agree with that person john amos really quit b/c he was never going to get a great job and they were never going to get out the ghetto. They prob were going to create some BS excuse saying he lost his job in Mississippi or something and end up right back in the ghetto... They didn't make it out till the last episode and that's sad to me
I know I cried when I heard he was dead and Florida made it so easy to feel her pain when she said damn damn damn and i was like o my god this is real. It felt surreal to me
He was cute?

Ralph Carter isn't gay. He just keeps his life private cuz he doesn't want people all up in his business
TheShayGirl3 11 months ago
Goddamn Bernadette stay fine. She could still get it, with her overly Christian ass. I don't know whether Ralph Carter is really gay but I'm not sure if even that would stop you from wanting her. Thelma was so sexy I bet she could make a gay man temporarily reconsider.

I've always loved Good Times!!!
mahboub28277 1 year ago
I really enjoyed this, them sharing their feelings and insight about that episode.
I was little when Good Times was originally on the air, and due to the fact I grew up in Houston, one of the cities which removed the show from its schedule, I became better acquainted with it in reruns over the years.
It remains one of my all-time favorite shows, and one of the very best.

HAS RALPH CARTER EVER COME OUT OF THE CLOSET
alexiscolby66 1 year ago
@alexiscolby66 yes, ralph lives with someone in LA, and has been for years.

@alexiscolby66
That's a terrible thing to say, although Ralph Carter does live a very private life,he is single and he has no children.
WCD73 1 year ago
That's foul that they didn't tell them before they read the script. smh
bebreezy93 1 year ago

It is sad
free2drm 1 year ago 39
@free2drm with that comment, you must be an awesome person, an awesome white guy, thumbs up to you
AmaruDon7 8 months ago
@free2drm I agree. They should never do that because the old saying goes, "If you can't say something good about somebody then don't say something bad." They will just be wasting their time and energy on this site. Therefore, I will say, the man is beautiful inside and out and very talented. He has contributed greatly to American theater. So, we should love and be proud of him, and overlook any negativity we read.
celestialpathway 5 months ago
@celestialpathway Agreed. I wish we could see him in more things. He is a good talent.

DaStr8Truth 1 year ago
Michael is 49 now
Thelma will be 57 this year!
They both age incredibly well!
Kudos!

Jackass producers. We lost the character of James so that they could give us more of the clownish J.J. antics. Jackass producers, and that includes Norman Lear.
hankaaron1961 1 year ago 6
@hankaaron1961 Aww man get off it J.J. Made that damn show, I love James too but he didn't have to quit, Jive turkey
macjunior3 1 year ago
@macjunior3 no actually I agree with that person john amos really quit b/c he was never going to get a great job and they were never going to get out the ghetto. They prob were going to create some BS excuse saying he lost his job in Mississippi or something and end up right back in the ghetto... They didn't make it out till the last episode and that's sad to me
