I respect this man. He is the only one who said the truth. The best and only defense against knife attack, unless u have one or any other weapon, is to RUN AWAY. What makes me sick about those "experts" that they let people to believe that one can engage someone with knife with bare hands. NEVER ATTEMPT TO DO THIS. DEADLY.
@arkadi100 run away is never best defence. what if you're walking with somebody (wife, mother, children) and somebody atack you with knife? what would you do? run away and leave your family member to die? you may be in situation when you ll not be able to run away.
@kisara88888 Were obviously talking about the ideal here. Why do you think Paul would make a video about knife fighting if it didn't have its place, stop trying to sound smart.
@arkadi100 That's only a half-truth. Sometimes u may not have any choice but to face the knife. A victim can find themselves hopelessly cornered and if u know for sure that the guy intends on finishing you, then u gotta do what u gotta do. It goes without saying that ur at a definite disadvantage and that u still may not survive. But it beats the hell out of just giving up and letting the guy kill u. This is why u need to train in something.
First off take a lesson from a police officer. If someone approaches you hostily keep your distance and assume they might have a knife. Secondly, observe your surrounding for a weapon you can use. Many weapons are superior to a knife because they have longer distances. Never hesitate to run either to get away or to get a weapon if needed. I'm no expert, these are just my thoughts.
@predatortheme People who carry guns have to keep them concealed because of our laws. That means u will either have some type of holster in ur belt, under ur arm or around ur ankle. The attacker has the advantage because he knows what he's is about to do while u have no idea an attack is even eminent. U might not even know that the attacker is there! By the time the attack happens u might not be able to get ur gun out in time. This is why u need hand to hand (to at least buy u some time).
Re: "Everyone who thinks they can confront a knife attacker needs to watch this first." Vunak is correct that it should be a last resort to face a knife attack empty-handed; your best bet is to run away or put some obstacle or barrier between you and the attacker. However, if you get cornered, it is still worthwhile knowing knife defense techniques, which can work if the attacker is unskilled or makes a mistake. If your opponent knows his stuff, you are gonna get cut.
There is a lot of truth in Sifu Vunak's instruction. No highly-trained martial artist, cop or soldier I know wants to face a knife-wielding assailant barehanded. Even someone with little or no training can inflict a lot of damage in a short amount of time, as Vunak notes. However, trauma physicians will tell you that as fearsome as a knife wound can be, it is generally more survivable than a gunshot wound if it does not kill you outright. Facing either one empty handed should be a last resort.
And if that slash hit the side of your neck, you'd be halfway decapitated. A blade is the equalizer. Even a puny, 110 lb weakling could do some serious damage with a blade. It takes ZERO strength to sever someone's head off.
I am from a filipino. here in the Philippines there is a province called Batangas and knife is their specialty. in the old days knife fighting is a common street scene as well as machete fighting specially in the rural areas. Here there is a saying that "you do not draw your knife unless you are going to use it " I remember listening to stories of my grandfathers killer friends how a man reacts to a stab in the chest. how a man hicups at a direct stab at the heart .
@akrhoable Brutal story. Thanks for sharing. You're Phillipino, eh? You ever watch "sabong"? I got to see it a few times in Louisiana before it was outlawed. Very misunderstood sport. I have great respect for the Phillipino sabong tradition. I even have a long kriss-blade knife from "August Moon", though I've never used it.
Thank you Mr. Vunak. Let's face it - the majority of FMA practioners have never been REALLY clocked in the head with any type of implement in their lives. One solid crack from a hard stick on your temple, or on your shin, and you're going DOWN! You could be Brock Lesnar, and you'll still crumple and fall o the ground. As Vunak showed in this video, a knife takes even less effort to cause serious damage. Even a glancing blow from a blade will cause serious, life threathenig damage.
I agree vunak is the best JKD man out there. He's skilled physically and a great instructor. Everyone who thinks they can confront a knife attacker needs to watch this first.
I have found very few that are in the same league of quality videos.
PV the man.

@osensei2987 A properly practiced draw stroke takes less than 0.5 seconds so it's not really an issue.
Besides, if you're worried about something like that. You'd be better off learning retention techniques
