If you really think about, Indian casinos are taking away Vegas business. Why spend that extra money to go travel when they have hotels built and show stoppers. I really feel that Las Vegas should have been the only place to go and gamble. I live in Phoenix, Az and we have 5 casinos that really close to each other.
Well we went to the Paris in 2011 and we got a great deal of $50 a night in March during the middle of the week. Is that too good a deal? The price jacks right up to $300.
Note, Atlantic City was doing that - offering rooms for practically nothing to senior citizens. It is doing better its casinos but many parts of that city has not recovered too much.

No question, Las Vegas is definitely hurting. However, for what it is worth, we at Las Vegas Direct have seen a 70% increase in bookings compared to last year, so things appear to be getting better from our end and maybe a forecast of better things to come. Of course, average rates are way down now that are contributing ($45/nt for places like Luxor, etc.), but it is still a positive sign in our opinion.

The state university had to cut programs that could of really helped the community (therapists, computer programs, clinical science). What Vegas needs right now is a miracle.
I've been in Vegas for 20 plus years, and to be candid, this is not the first time this has happened, and what it will do is weed out the transients, and get the city back to what it was in the 80's. Those of us who bought our houses in the 80's are still doing good. We still have positive equity, and decent interest rates. Vegas will scale back, and we'll lose 20% of the population, but, in five years we'll be a stronger smaller city.
I live in Vegas (I've been here for years). The numbers are true and the foreclosures are very real. Unemployment is insane. My student loans are increasing dramatically. But, ironically, there is so much construction going on. Houses are being built like crazy, schools keep popping up, and for some reason Reid gave us a shooting range *cough* wants NRA support *cough*. We're not handling our money right. I love living here, but I always imagine the day I'll have to head out to Cali or Arizona.

Probably not. My guess is that there won't be enough high-end customers to support all of the Strip's luxury hotels, so some of those hotels will fail and be sold for pennies on the dollar. The new owners will revert to the original Las Vegas business model of free or cheap rooms, food, drinks, and entertainment, then make it up in the casino. That business model built Las Vegas, so It can also save Las Vegas.
In a way this could be good news maybe if powerful lobbies force the bankers to invest in other industries besides the stock market we could see some financial reform.
@7MMXX You can vacation in Las Vegas for less than any other destination on earth. You can stay at world famous hotels for $25/night and get 2for1 meals at elegant restaurants & buffets for under $5/person. You can even take a city bus from the airport directly to a lot of resort hotels. You need to get away from the Strip, get your hands on some premium coupon books, and do your homework. Las Vegas is a terrific destination for any budget.
I wonder what a bankrupt American city would look like? Think about it, no police, no fire department, no hostpitals, no schools, no prisons. It might be interesting to see.

I grew up in Rochester, which was once a great place to live and work, Kodak and Xerox and Dupont were our huge employers, but downsizing and outsourcing, along with the harsh climate (6 month winters, no joke) have driven people out. I myself left after I graduated high school, because I didn't see a future there, live in Phoenix, AZ now. Here, I at least have a job that I know won't go away, and no snow : )

I live in Las Vegas and follow this story every day. While dramatic, the Fontainebleau story is dated. We've had hotel tower closures at several properties (Binion's & Sahara, for example), and restaurant closures are also common. Anything to save a buck.

I've been in Vegas for 20 plus years, and to be candid, this is not the first time this has happened, and what it will do is weed out the transients, and get the city back to what it was in the 80's. Those of us who bought our houses in the 80's are still doing good. We still have positive equity, and decent interest rates. Vegas will scale back, and we'll lose 20% of the population, but, in five years we'll be a stronger smaller city.

I live in Vegas (I've been here for years). The numbers are true and the foreclosures are very real. Unemployment is insane. My student loans are increasing dramatically. But, ironically, there is so much construction going on. Houses are being built like crazy, schools keep popping up, and for some reason Reid gave us a shooting range *cough* wants NRA support *cough*. We're not handling our money right. I love living here, but I always imagine the day I'll have to head out to Cali or Arizona.

Probably not. My guess is that there won't be enough high-end customers to support all of the Strip's luxury hotels, so some of those hotels will fail and be sold for pennies on the dollar. The new owners will revert to the original Las Vegas business model of free or cheap rooms, food, drinks, and entertainment, then make it up in the casino. That business model built Las Vegas, so It can also save Las Vegas.

You can stay at world famous hotels for $25/night and get 2for1 meals at elegant restaurants & buffets for under $5/person. You can even take a city bus from the airport directly to a lot of resort hotels. You need to get away from the Strip, get your hands on some premium coupon books, and do your homework. Las Vegas is a terrific destination for any budget.

@tangent272 a lot of upstate New York is going the way of the buffalo, so to speak. I grew up in Rochester, which was once a great place to live and work, Kodak and Xerox and Dupont were our huge employers, but downsizing and outsourcing, along with the harsh climate (6 month winters, no joke) have driven people out. I myself left after I graduated high school, because I didn't see a future there, live in Phoenix, AZ now. Here, I at least have a job that I know won't go away, and no snow : )

Strange; I always got the impression the American north east was the rich, stable, sensible part; I'm surprised to hear it's going so badly up there.
As for what I said, seriously, it'll be interesting to see what happens when there really is an American city without *any* government services; it hasn't happened yet (not even in Detroit) becuase we'd have to have heard about it but I think it will lay some truths bare and teach us a lot about how things really work.

I live in Las Vegas. The unemployment rate here frightens the heck out of me. I moved here from Wisconsin with my family, and besides wanting to move back because I like it better, I want to move back because Nevada is quickly becoming the worst state in the nation. I am in college, and will graduate by 2013, so hopefully the economy of the US and Nevada clears up. Otherwise, I'm packing my things up, and getting out of here. The only thing that I would stay for is the low taxes.

I live in Las Vegas and follow this story every day. While dramatic, the Fontainebleau story is dated. We've had hotel tower closures at several properties (Binion's & Sahara, for example), and restaurant closures are also common. Anything to save a buck.
Las Vegas needs to get back to its original business model of offering free or cheap rooms, food, drinks, and entertainment, then making it up in the casinos. We'll see that eventually.

I agree. That would entice many more to come here. However, we have to do more. The first thing I would say, is to raise the taxes on the casinos here. The casinos in this state pay the lowest rate in the world (Around 6%). Why don't we raise it? At least by 1-3%? We could make more money. Also, our education needs to be fixed. It is the worst in the nation. How can we attract businesses, with families, with our poor schooling?

If you think the unemployment rate in Vegas is bad, you should see Tahoe. Vegas has 14% (official) unemployment, Lake Tahoe has 17% official and over 25% if you count the discouraged workers.
