I'm thinking about being a Rescue Swimmer and maybe transferring to BUD/S... I figured if I really like AIRR I'll stay but if I don't, it'll help me train for BUD/S anyway so I might as well go there first, because if I fail BUD/S, I don't think you can try again... Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this
@Iceman5164 if u come in without a contract to be a SEAL then you wont be going to BUD/s. Special Operations programs, SEAL, SWCC and EOD arent taking any fleet returnees, only first term sailors. if you come in under an AIRR contract you will spend over 3 years before you can even be considered for another assignment. you have boot camp, aircrew school, RSS, AW A school, then your fleet replacement school. then you have to do 24 months minimum at that squadron as a minimum activity tour.
Thanks, that's pretty much why I'm sticking with my Plan to get a SEAL Contract... But I'm still not sure if I should go to College for 4 Years or so first and get a Degree in Police Science and Law (Along with a few classes in Arabic and Russian) or just Enlist right out of High School and go to College after the Military
WOW! These Sailors are impressive. Sounds like a great way to serve the United States. Did any Aviation Rescue Swimmers see any action in Operation Desert Storm? GO NAVY!
@waterhead001 Actually they did. My dad was an AWCM ( aviation warfare master chief) so he was e-9 AWR. He was deployed during Desert Shield-Storm. They do on land operations and they do see action. Hence the reason that Romeo Helicopters carry a 50 Cal mount.
@waterhead001 yup. He ended his career as a rescue swimmer as well. one of the only master chiefs who still did SAR, and of course I am. I got my contract for AIRR and just finished basic. Luckily I can ask him for anything
@waterhead001 Thanks! and so i've been told but pt every day and being in shape just makes the workouts like every day routine ya know. and thank you will do!
@sajewell actually man you will never see or do overland combat operations while flying in a 60R or 60B halicopter. the Romeo and Bravo carry the .50 cal GAU-16 machine gun for overwater use. outside of getting qualified on the guns you will almost never use one....you will do a lot of flights where you sit in the back so a pilot can get his quals, you fly around and look at water and if you are and AWR that flies in the 60R or 60B you will do anti sub warfare.
@721bri actually, during desert storm and shield all qualified CSAR crews were sent and they did do over land operations. Of course they are rescue swimmers but they are trained everywhere in any geography and have the capability to rescue/fight/fly for the hell of it anywhere. Of course Sierra crews are more equipped and battle ready, but still.
@sajewell yep they were sent to major airports in iraq and did not do any direct action operations or any CSAR and they werent flying in 60R's or 60B's. i have worked at the operations watchfloor for the 5th fleet AOR and read the JSOC doctrine on CSAR and no Navy helo assets are on that list for CSAR. the closest that a navy helo squadron comes is HSC 84 which does Special Operations Support. Navy CSAR mission was, unfortunately, taken away a long time ago.
I'm want to be an ARS so bad, I have to wait until I get me braces off before I enlist. What are some training tips I need to know? I am an ocean lifeguard on the beach, and have a good base on ocean swimming and I'm a strong swimmer/runner. Any tips and help would be much appreciated. Thanks
@Jordanderson55 Same here I have to wait for my braces to come for. I want to enlist in the Coast Guard and become an AST. I am also a lifeguard. I swim ever time I go to work and hol my breath while swimming under the water for as long as I can
I have plans to enlist in the air force or navy. I want a job that will be exciting and adventurous. I can't do any combat control in the air force because I am a woman. Is it possible to be an Aviation Rescue Diver?
Have my AIRR contract. Took over a year to get it and not once did I think about quitting. If you want this job never give up and be patient! It is going to take time. Leaving for RTC August 16. Contact me if you are leaving that day and are in SpecOps
So my path to doing this is to at least go to college, should I do the ROTC program? I'm going to be 17 when I graduate and I want to know what I should do to get into the training.
so do navy AIRR train with the Navy SEALs? i saw tht you have to go through buds to be an AIRR on their sight so does that mean you will be training with them as well?
I was lucky enough to deploy on Frigates and Destroyers as a Naval Aircrewman/Rescue swimmer, so I had the best of both worlds! Proud to be a tincan sailor.
@nicolas1999444 the career counselor will help you reclassify if that happens. hope you dont fail out of BUD/s though man...if i were you i wouldnt even consider that possibility. Good luck to you.
@jeric69fb actually they arent man. i have been a rescue swimmer for a long time and trust me....rescue swimmers arent spec ops or even close to being spec ops.

i looked into this and went to the website. I see AIRR listed under that heading but that is pretty much where it stops. AIRR is not part of any Special Operations Chain of Command. The only exception is 84 which was/is attached to JSOC in the 5thFleet AOR. Rescue Swimmers get SDAP but not any Special Operations Incentive pays. The money that funds us does not come from Special Operations command. Seems like it is just a listing on a Navy website for recruitment purposes. V/R
Drew, i got your email and agree with you 100%, who cares about some title, we have a badass job. i just dont want people coming expecting something because of a title you know. i would LOVE to do station SAR somewhere but there were no orders on JASS for it this time. keep safe up there man, and it was really cool seeing someone i was an instructor with in this vodeo. I'm going out for this job right now. I ship out for boot camp in September and took the pt test already and everything. Can't wait! But if that lady can do it...then surely more women can as well!
I want to be a Navy Rescue Swimmer so bad, but I don't know how I would go about doing it. Do I contact a recruiter and tell him this is what I wanna do? And how could I be sure I would get the job I want. I'm a lifeguard now, but being a rescue swimmer in the Navy would be amazing
@FireRescue096 dont become a navy rescue swimmer.....it is not what it appears to be. join the Air Force and be a pararescuer if you really want to do cool shit.
@721bri I looked into being a Pararescuer in the Air Force, and it looks great but I was also told by several people that not many people become Pararescuers. There is a high drop out rate, and very few graduate
@FireRescue096 there is a very high drop rate but that can be said for any elite program. Good luck in whatever you decide but i think you might only be seeing half the story on Navy SAR. After SAR school this job becomes more like a collateral duty. Navy helo crewman primary job is ASW. i literally was a sar swimmer for 10 years beofre i finally got to do a SAR mission. whatever you decide good luck man~!
@FireRescue096 I would recommend it. I'm a lifeguard myself, though I'm going into the Navy as a Aviation Technician, but I'm going to change my career to Rescue Swimmer when I get the chance, I worked it out with my recuiter. Just talk to your recuiter, he can help you. But I warn you, what they show in the commercials and what the recuiters tell you aren't as true as you think it is. Be VERY cautious, they make the rules and can change whenever they want, & you'll be a janitor half the time.
@caligulaincarnate See, the last part of your comment just scared me. I DO NOT want to be a janitor while in the military. Maybe I should join the Marine Corps. At least then I know that I could get a decent job lol Maybe a combat engineer or something haha
@FireRescue096 If you join the Marines, when you get out, you will have a much less oportunity to get a decent job than you would if you were in Navy or Air Force. Plus you won't have as much time to go to college to get a better education, also you might die quicker. So you'll have to do janitorial work, I'm going in as an Avistion Tech., so I can get a promising job at the airport, if I need to. Besides, the Navy has multiple of more than decent jobs.
@FireRescue096 Besides in any military sector, you'll definitely be doing some sort of janitorial work, though a lot more in the Navy, since dust is a fire hazard.
@FireRescue096 well it comes with the territory. I know the Coast Guard also does Rescue Swimming, but it's not the same as the Navy. It's not as a bad you think, it gets better with time, plus you'll make friends there so, that makes everything easier too. You usually won't be working alone either, unless the person in command has it out for you.
@caligulaincarnate your recruiter has NOTHING to do with what happens to you after you join. there are alot of factors that have to do with you changing rates. the AW rating and rescue swimmers might be over manned. your rate might be critical, your command might not let you change rates unless you have completed your minimum tour on board....there is alot that you dont realize and your recruiter CANNOT work out you switching from your rate to another one. good luck though.
@721bri I never said he did, he just told me what I can do after I get in, along with the guys who worked out my contract. I already know about certain factors, that's why I never said it was certain. You don't know how much I know or don't know, so I suggest you not assume, you sound annoying.
@caligulaincarnate listen internet tough guy, i have been doing this for over 15 years and i can tell that you dont know shit! ill assume whatever i want based on YOUR post and the things that YOU wrote. i read all your posts here and you are giving advice on things you know nothing about. and i was trying to help you out so YOU didnt join thinking you could switch rates at will because "you worked it out with your recruiter". get your FACTS straight. ill send you my # if you wanna discuss this
Don't come in too cocky, you'll be getting your team beat for nonsense. Dint believe anyone when they say it pays to be a winner. Never do anything without your team and as far as the officer question, you CAN be in a spec-ops rate as an officer, but you cannot be a rescue swimmer.
@drpeppa69 no you cant be an officer and be in spec ops. i think you have to be e-5 or lower to try for spec ops, you can rank up after you are in though.
@noxcide2 im not saying there just going to give them to me when i show up, but i always aim high and I will do my absolute best the best swimmer there. I can promise that.
I leave in November for Great Lakes. I gave up a swimming scholarships to get the opportunity to become a rescue swimmer. I am made for this shit, Im gonna own every record at Pensacola by the time Im done with A school.
@brandonberg1 you know i dont know how it all works. but im in the DEP right now for AIRR, i leave july 8th. im 17 and graduate end of may. and from my understanding it was just luck that gets you a good contract date. ur times are good so im sure theyll want u right away. however they are gonna rag on u on ur PST's so try to get those better. i was doing about what ur doing but in a few months im blowing all ur times out of the water, it is competitive so work HARD to get those up bro
@brandonberg1 if you have your contract already than you are good. if you havent and you WANT to leave in june, you prob wouldnt leave til october or later
I would think about coast guard because the definately get more rescue opportunities. That's what i've heard. Navy doesn't get many opportunities. HOOYAH!
Justesen was one of my instructors at my FRAC. She did a lot of my SAR flights, and taught me a lot of good techniques that I still use today at my squadron. Justesen, if you're reading this, thank you very much!
that's awesome there are women in this profession. The canadian forces have very, very few women who make it through the sartech selection course. They say the course is just as hard as the JTF-2 course.
Loved the video. my daughter is in bootcamp and sent me a letter she is training to be air rescue swimmer. She is so physically strong even though she is only 105 pounds. She at least doubles the min in situps, pushups, chin ups, etc. I am hoping she will have a good chance of making it. Do you think they approached her because of her physical ability because she knew nothing about the job when she left. You guys are awesome... As a mother of a Navy Recuit makes you cry watching it :)
hey i am also a female looking into becoming a rescue swimmer. like your daughter, my weight is about 120. if you can tell me did she go into the navy wanting to do this or did they pick her? thanks any info would be awesome.
hey xROCKxi you're an idiot... the coast guard ain't goin to rescue pilot in the middle of the ocean or in iraq or afganistan that just got shot down...
Pretty cool to see how the video turned out. In respect to the PJ's, SEALS, and any other special operations program. They are all a great groups. I just so happen to like my job and still maintain respect for the other communities out there. By the way, great editing... I didn't think it would turn out as it did.
Here at Whidbey Island we average 1 to 2 a month. Depending on the year. We currently have 3 incredible SAR SMT's with us. They do not go through the same training, but they perform all of the duties with the Rescue Swimmer for Rappel rescues. Though they do not go through all lot of the training the swimmers do, their training and skills in the medical field far excede most of the Corpsman in the Navy.
Seals. Airedales. Corpsmen. JAG. I see them all in popular media. Want an image of an aircraft carrier? You stumble over them every place the word "Navy" is used. Where is the REAL NAVY? Destroyer men rule the seas. I want to see the fleet, guys. Remember the old lady with her line, "Where's the BEEF?" My line is, "Where's the FLEET?" Without the fleet, there is no Navy!
8 years active duty, 5 years at sea aboard destroyers. Yeah, I know the Navy.
Once you finish bootcamp and A school, do you have a choice to serve on a destroyer or an aircraft carrier? Because after I graduate I plan on joining the navy, and I want to serve on a Destroyer.
At some point, you will be given a "dream sheet" to fill out. You WILL be assigned by "needs of the navy", but they will attempt to give you one of your top choices. If you put down destroyer, frigate, cruiser, you will probably get one of them. Chances are better if you request east coast duty, I think - EVERYONE wants to go to PacFleet. Good luck, whatever you decide on!! My youngest son just signed on, 1 year DEP. I'm proud!
The only choice you have is when you go and sign your contract. They show you a list of jobs you qualify for according to your asvab score and medical stuff. The needs of the navy determine what platform and where you are stationed.
@Alien96Ware I know its an abbreviation smart one. I was telling someone who didn't know that SEAL is, and always will be capitalised. Since you didn't know what we were talking about you jumped the gun you made an ass of yourself.
@greegarrett1 I didn't say it wasn't and I know what if fucking stands for. Please, read past comments before you try and correct me. I'm enlisted in the US Navy, I understand full what it stands for.
@Describingthelost I Dint say that you dint know what it meant. Im simply correcting your english. SEAL is an acronym not an abbreviation, just like FBI or CIA. Theres no need to be an asswhole and get defensive.
@knpdyeballarice well the decision isn't final I'm just gonna think about it first, being out at sea for months not sure if it's me. It may be for others though the navy has lots of benefits.
Quit being so modest. What they are trying to say is that the US Navy rules over the world: sea, air, and land. Anyone who fucks with it answers to us.
You are not a PJ (Pararescueman) unless you enlisted in the Air Force in which case you are STILL not a PJ until you make it through the PJ Training pipeline which is one of the most extreme in the military (higher attrition rate then Navy SEALs). Good luck though, but trust me, don't claim you are something until you have earned it. TRUST ME.
Calm down. The kid was probably excited because he got an awesome job with the Air Force. And attrition rate doesn't mean anything. All the spec op commmunities are bad ass. PJ's and SEAL's have different roles and it's pointless to try and elevate one over the other.
It is dependent on the class size and what each indiviudal is like. During this generation there are fewer people who can complete BUD/s, less people who can endure that much pain. And this is true for the Norwegian Marinejegers as well. :)
I would perhaps say that FSK are the Norwegian response of the Navy SEALs. One of the differences between MJK and FSK, it that a Marinejeger team on lets say 5 people, everybody knows a little about everything. But on a FSK team everyone got a special job. For example being the doc, or expert on explosives, or got sniper skills and such
Cool. But all SEALs know explosives becasue it is incorporated into their training. Hence, UDT/SEAL. But either way the Norwegian military and the Polish GROM kick ass.
Ye, I know.. Have the BUD/S dvd ^^ But I'm sure most of them have knowledge about explosive, but not all of them are experts on it. I was also just giving an example, so not sure if that is the real roles or anything.. Haha, of course. Norway is the real viking land ! But I also like the SAS, the SEALs and the Green Berets. The part that's shocking about BUD/S graduates is that most of the really is top athlets.. Could be in the swimming/running Olympics if you think about it
Yeah that is very true but SEALs are highly motivated to be warriors and that is why Olympic athletes fail the course becasue they are and were not motivated to be an elite maritime warrior.
I'm thinking about being a Rescue Swimmer and maybe transferring to BUD/S... I figured if I really like AIRR I'll stay but if I don't, it'll help me train for BUD/S anyway so I might as well go there first, because if I fail BUD/S, I don't think you can try again... Be VERY cautious, they make the rules and can change whenever they want, & you'll be a janitor half the time.
caligulaincarnate 1 year ago
@caligulaincarnate See, the last part of your comment just scared me. I DO NOT want to be a janitor while in the military. Maybe I should join the Marine Corps. At least then I know that I could get a decent job lol Maybe a combat engineer or something haha
FireRescue096 1 year ago
@FireRescue096 If you join the Marines, when you get out, you will have a much less oportunity to get a decent job than you would if you were in Navy or Air Force. Plus you won't have as much time to go to college to get a better education, also you might die quicker. So you'll have to do janitorial work, I'm going in as an Avistion Tech., so I can get a promising job at the airport, if I need to. Besides, the Navy has multiple of more than decent jobs.
caligulaincarnate 1 year ago
@FireRescue096 Besides in any military sector, you'll definitely be doing some sort of janitorial work, though a lot more in the Navy, since dust is a fire hazard.
caligulaincarnate 1 year ago
@caligulaincarnate But I kind of just want to be a Rescue Swimmer. I couldn't really imagine doing anything else really in the Navy
FireRescue096 1 year ago
@FireRescue096 well it comes with the territory. I know the Coast Guard also does Rescue Swimming, but it's not the same as the Navy. It's not as a bad you think, it gets better with time, plus you'll make friends there so, that makes everything easier too. You usually won't be working alone either, unless the person in command has it out for you.
caligulaincarnate 1 year ago
@caligulaincarnate your recruiter has NOTHING to do with what happens to you after you join. there are alot of factors that have to do with you changing rates. the AW rating and rescue swimmers might be over manned. your rate might be critical, your command might not let you change rates unless you have completed your minimum tour on board....there is alot that you dont realize and your recruiter CANNOT work out you switching from your rate to another one. good luck though.
721bri 1 year ago
@721bri I never said he did, he just told me what I can do after I get in, along with the guys who worked out my contract. I already know about certain factors, that's why I never said it was certain. You don't know how much I know or don't know, so I suggest you not assume, you sound annoying.
caligulaincarnate 1 year ago
@caligulaincarnate listen internet tough guy, i have been doing this for over 15 years and i can tell that you dont know shit! ill assume whatever i want based on YOUR post and the things that YOU wrote. i read all your posts here and you are giving advice on things you know nothing about. and i was trying to help you out so YOU didnt join thinking you could switch rates at will because "you worked it out with your recruiter". get your FACTS straight. ill send you my # if you wanna discuss this
721bri 1 year ago
Don't come in too cocky, you'll be getting your team beat for nonsense. Dint believe anyone when they say it pays to be a winner. Never do anything without your team and as far as the officer question, you CAN be in a spec-ops rate as an officer, but you cannot be a rescue swimmer.

@brandonberg1 you know i dont know how it all works. but im in the DEP right now for AIRR, i leave july 8th. im 17 and graduate end of may. and from my understanding it was just luck that gets you a good contract date. ur times are good so im sure theyll want u right away. however they are gonna rag on u on ur PST's so try to get those better. i was doing about what ur doing but in a few months im blowing all ur times out of the water, it is competitive so work HARD to get those up bro

that's awesome there are women in this profession.

How many rescues have you had in your career? I'm interested in the medical aspect of things, do SAR Corpsman go through the same training?
Trashjack101 2 years ago

Runaway1956 2 years ago 15
I agree.
maybe a little shame for a such a great navy, a youtube account like this without any fleet in it...
thadutchguy 2 years ago
Once you finish bootcamp and A school, do you have a choice to serve on a destroyer or an aircraft carrier? Because after I graduate I plan on joining the navy, and I want to serve on a Destroyer.
jordanroper016 2 years ago
At some point, you will be given a "dream sheet" to fill out. You WILL be assigned by "needs of the navy", but they will attempt to give you one of your top choices. If you put down destroyer, frigate, cruiser, you will probably get one of them. Chances are better if you request east coast duty, I think - EVERYONE wants to go to PacFleet. Good luck, whatever you decide on!! My youngest son just signed on, 1 year DEP. I'm proud!
Runaway1956 2 years ago
The only choice you have is when you go and sign your contract. They show you a list of jobs you qualify for according to your asvab score and medical stuff. The needs of the navy determine what platform and where you are stationed.

@Describingthelost Maybe because its an abbreviation stupid.
Alien96Ware 6 months ago
@Alien96Ware I know its an abbreviation smart one. I was telling someone who didn't know that SEAL is, and always will be capitalised. Since you didn't know what we were talking about you jumped the gun you made an ass of yourself.
Describingthelost 6 months ago
@Describingthelost actually its a acronym. Meaning SEaAirLand. an abbreviation would be ex. for example.
greegarrett1 6 months ago
@greegarrett1 I didn't say it wasn't and I know what if fucking stands for. Please, read past comments before you try and correct me. I'm enlisted in the US Navy, I understand full what it stands for.
Describingthelost 6 months ago
@Describingthelost I Dint say that you dint know what it meant. Im simply correcting your english. SEAL is an acronym not an abbreviation, just like FBI or CIA. Theres no need to be an asswhole and get defensive.
greegarrett1 6 months ago
@greegarrett1 Not being defensive, its just annoying to be talked down to over the internet of all things. And excuse my misuse of certain words

yohsempai 9 months ago
@yohsempai sorry to hear that.
knpdyeballarice 9 months ago
@knpdyeballarice well the decision isn't final I'm just gonna think about it first, being out at sea for months not sure if it's me. It may be for others though the navy has lots of benefits.
yohsempai 9 months ago
Quit being so modest. What they are trying to say is that the US Navy rules over the world: sea, air, and land. Anyone who fucks with it answers to us.

Enlisted as a Para-rescue Jumper and ship out Aug 4th...wish me luck!
kennycalif 2 years ago
You are not a PJ (Pararescueman) unless you enlisted in the Air Force in which case you are STILL not a PJ until you make it through the PJ Training pipeline which is one of the most extreme in the military (higher attrition rate then Navy SEALs). Good luck though, but trust me, don't claim you are something until you have earned it. TRUST ME.
toddegg25 2 years ago
Hooyah toddegg25! Green footprints all the way!
bfiorvante 2 years ago
Calm down. The kid was probably excited because he got an awesome job with the Air Force. And attrition rate doesn't mean anything. All the spec op commmunities are bad ass. PJ's and SEAL's have different roles and it's pointless to try and elevate one over the other.
chappy48 2 years ago

80-85 percent fail BUD/s.
Orvellrednbacer 2 years ago
I've always heard it was 70 %
Slushflush 2 years ago
And actually, 90 % fail in the Norwegian Special Force FSK (Forsvarets Spesialkommando).
Slushflush 2 years ago
It is dependent on the class size and what each indiviudal is like. During this generation there are fewer people who can complete BUD/s, less people who can endure that much pain. And this is true for the Norwegian Marinejegers as well. :)
Orvellrednbacer 2 years ago
Ye. Not sure if I'm mixing FSK with MJK
Slushflush 2 years ago
The Norwegian Marinejegers are essential the Norwegian Navy SEALs.
Orvellrednbacer 2 years ago
I would perhaps say that FSK are the Norwegian response of the Navy SEALs. One of the differences between MJK and FSK, it that a Marinejeger team on lets say 5 people, everybody knows a little about everything. But on a FSK team everyone got a special job. For example being the doc, or expert on explosives, or got sniper skills and such
Slushflush 2 years ago
Cool. But all SEALs know explosives becasue it is incorporated into their training. Hence, UDT/SEAL. But either way the Norwegian military and the Polish GROM kick ass.
Orvellrednbacer 2 years ago
Ye, I know.. Have the BUD/S dvd ^^ But I'm sure most of them have knowledge about explosive, but not all of them are experts on it. I was also just giving an example, so not sure if that is the real roles or anything.. Haha, of course. Norway is the real viking land ! But I also like the SAS, the SEALs and the Green Berets. The part that's shocking about BUD/S graduates is that most of the really is top athlets.. Could be in the swimming/running Olympics if you think about it
Slushflush 2 years ago
Yeah that is very true but SEALs are highly motivated to be warriors and that is why Olympic athletes fail the course becasue they are and were not motivated to be an elite maritime warrior.
