It's apparently not a Cannibal Piranha or any piranha at all, but rather a payara and the Wikipedia page on "payara" doesn't mention any relationship to piranhas, except for saying that they constitute most of the diet of the payaras.

I first learned of this based on a post someone made for the video, "River Monsters: Vampire Piranha", which is another payara and not a piranha.

Wikipedia also gives other names and says the fangs can grow to 4 to 6in. long, much larger than in this good video.

One time that I visited a fish hatchery near the Quantum Reservoir in Massachusetts there was a trout in one of the basins of larger trout and the fish had swallowed another large trout of what appeared to be nearly the same length. Only the tail end of the swallowed trout was still sticking out of the other trout's mouth, but based on the size of the tail, my guess was for nearly the same length. It definitely was very surprising.

Afaik, the feed they're given does not include other fish.

@theskilletkiller I've seen the river monsters episode about the goliath tiger fish and i've also seen the misslabeled youtube clip from that episode, labeled 80LB piranha. in the tigerfish episode he compares it to an oversized piranha, but also says that it is not a piranha.

The fish in the cannibal piranha clip is a payara, a close relative to the piranha, but still not a piranha. apparently whomever releases these clips thinks that the only scary fish with teeth are piranha.

that fish is a pussy. i once caught a dolly varden with a rainbows tail sticking out of its mouth larger than its own. the dead trouts' tail was pristine, but it was more and more digested as you followed it down the dollys' throat to its stomach were it was down to a nub of spine. but the best part is that it still went after my worm for some damn reason!
