Oddly, it was this work, that turned me into a real reader. I have ADHD so novels did not work. Poetry was too dense for my young age. This story was my shock and awe moment in literature.
@BTURNER1961 I also have ADD and funny enough I did not know about short stories. This story and a few others like Young Goodman Brown have captured my interest to read. The stories are just long enough to provoke some serious thought yet short enough that your attention span goes unbroken.
Respond to this video... Christian or not, this short story will take you back to Biblical times and have you take a first century worldview approach, or thought of , understanding mankind. From cruelty to traditional conformance. Old man Mr. Summers complains that other towns have stopped this tradition and placed blame on their youth. Thank God for the sheep that dared to be different in the other towns and break tradition; whereas, the youth chose the correct Shepard.
These videos were so helpful, I'm studying the violence inherent in mankind along with Conrad's Heart of Darkness and there are so many amazing points here I'm going to exceed the word limit on my coursework!
all i can think of is pandora's box/jar. the black box brings out the worse in the townsfolk and on the same note, it represents the core of brutality in this story.
what kind of people... i think they are bunch of people who are blinded by their tradition.. i hate this movie.. its disturbing.. unluckily its one of our sylabus this semester..

I love this story, and I thought I understood it well but this just sheds light on a whole bunch of things that I hadn't noticed in it.
Thanks!
