Birgit Nilsson "Brunhilde's immolation" Bayreuth

As much as I love Nilsson, I now believe that Gertrude Grob-Pradl is the quintessential voice for Brünhilde. Nilsson's international fame over shadowed her but give credit where credit is due. Grob-Pradl's sound is amazing in this role. That said, I still love hearing Nilsson sing this role. Thrilling!!! Nilsson's Turandot, Elektra and Salome are unsurpassed in my opinion. The incredible brilliance and ease of sound in the upper voice that she possessed is perfect for those roles.

Most critics agree that after Flagstad, Birgit Nilsson was the supreme Wagnerian soprano. She was also able to sing this heavy repertoire well into her old age. I also enjoy Astrid Varnay, who is perhaps superior because Nilsson rarely dipped into the chest/lower register. Varnay could sing what appears to be a mezzo voice but also has the potency of a dramatic soprano. Nilsson is thrilling and at home with Wagner and Strauss however. There's no denying her brilliance

Great sound....Birgit was the best and unrivaled Brunhilde...she was born to play the part and it's the part I associate with her voice ...she was a great dramatic soprano who could take on roles like Turandot, Isolde and Salome which could otherwise kill a soprano !!
