  • doesnt matter who plays it live or what they use, jason WROTE these bass lines, and in all honesty they are more intense than cliffs lines, no disrespect to cliff, in terms of sheer speed and attack. Frankly rob hasnt impressed me yet, and ive seen him live 3 times. Yeah robs a great player but he just doesnt contribute the way jason and cliff did.

  • @avengedman666 Tottaly agree, jason was definitly more metal (fit in more) wish his sound was louder on stage, i wasnt there so i cant judge (even if i was i would forget) cliff was more classical sound (tone) and more technical, like how he would add fills (in the bassline) now rob i havent seen nothing original that its cool besides his solos, but he can play metallica songs the way they should be, so hes cool 2

  • Robert..Has to play that shit with his fingers..LIVE! lol...Just shows how much of a Bass Monster he is

  • Comment removed

  • @bhavnish22 so this is shit cause its played with pick? then u should know that some of the songs from death magnetic is playd with pick also...cyanide is one of them. and this means that rob sucks also just becouse he plays with pick sometimes..this should prove to you that it shouldnt mean nothing if jason plays with pick or not...i play bass with fingers and still im dying to be as good pick bassist as jason...point taken? if not then go fuck yourself

  • @Grenderstar Uhhh. Right..I think you need to really chill out dude. I was just praising Rob's abilities and not dissing Jason at all. Geeez...I would suggest anger management courses for you bro

  • @Grenderstar In case you are not well versed with that slang,,,let me enlighten you. When you like something you go 'That shit's dope man'...or 'That shit's crazy dude'...When I said 'shit' I didnt mean that Jason's bass track is shit you moron. Seriously...fucking idiot

  • meh he still can't hold a candle to Cliff

    Cliff > Robert > Jason

  • Oh my God! I think his right hand fell off after recording Dyers Eve...

  • Good sound \m/

  • @Animelloveer

    That's become old now..

  • This picture Jason has similar to Brian Peppers

  • I was half expecting to come here and stare at a picture of Jason Newsted in silence for 5 mintues.

  • HOLY CRAP! THE JUSTICE ALBUM HAS BASS????

  • @Animelloveer AND..... IT'S GOOD!!!??? WTF IS THIS SHIT!!! XD

  • @yodog678 yes, this is good. sounds better than Cliff part from Ride The Lightning

  • 3 people have outgrown their fuckin' lullaby

  • THIS IS FUCKING SWEET @hentajus

  • how did you isolate the bass track? @metfan4l

  • Cool to hear this since they always buried Jason's bass in the final mix,, almost to the point it didn't exist...

  • 3 Dislikes? Lars Jame's & Kirk?

  • how he can play that way without his bass felt appart...and you noobs and haters try to play like this guy! stop comparing...cliff cant play with this feeling, robert ok i have to admit with his pluck technique and speed he play with no problem but still jason is 100% that any of you..you should ashame yourself, arguing in youtube, what a waste of youth!

  • Personally I believe that Jason Newsted was the best bassist Metallica has had. He had the drive to play bass. Doesn't matter what you use to play bass he still was 100% trash.

  • @TheAnorexicSeal No Cliff was the best. Then Rob, Then jason. Jason cant even touch cliff

  • @CalebValgardson They each have their specialties. I agree that Cliff was the best skill wise. Jason had the best stage presence out of them all and is a badass backup vocalist. Rob is kind of a mix of the two.

  • @TheAnorexicSeal he wa 100% tHrash!!!! the "H" makes a big difference remember it my friend.

  • Trujillo can destroy with her fingers

Newsted can kill with her pick

  • @VicenteNewsted Her?

  • @Sneepler sorry, I have a bad english.. I think... I'm not sure if you could understand my answer :P

  • @VicenteNewsted lol Her

  • @VicenteNewsted I sure hope you meant him lmao

  • I love when the top comments are related

  • you critizied jason because he plays with pick and not with the fingers but those faggs who critizied just use their fingers to stick them on their assholes!

  • @juandiegometallica hey i dont critize pick playing bassists

  • the fact that this album was so heavy without bass says a fucking lot.

  • bom chika wow wow

  • If the bass was heavier,And Justice for All would be one huge mark in metal history.

  • Trujillo can play this with one finger!Fuck haters!

  • I expected there to be no sound..

  • Play this and the album version at the same time and it rocks!!!

  • I love the brutal sound he gets out of it.

  • ...and justice for jason

  • It's A Cover? XD

  • HA the only way you can actually hear the bass....whos idea was that anyway???

if i was in a band recording and and they were like, were gonna mix it so noone can hear you, id walk right there......

  • Okay, tired of the debate. It's whatever the song calls for. Here, I'm gonna re-direct the conversation and make you completely forget the whole argument. Pardon me, metfan41, would you mind uploading some Motley Crue? :P

  • the way jason plays bass doesn't matters, bass exists to be played no matter what you use to play, it can be your tongue or your foot, what matters is that you are playing it and creating good melodies.

  • @ArtQuakedoom95x4 you mean to create grooves not melodies. Bass's primary funtion is to create a groove, then you can take another bass and layer a melody over it, but without a groove a bass is nothing...and a groove can be either melodic, rhythmic, or both, which is why it acts like glue for the instrument playing a tune (typically a guitar) and a rhythmic percussive line (drums).

  • @syndrome666 with "melodies" i mean "music", but your comment was interesting, thanks for the reply ^_^

  • @ArtQuakedoom95x4 My tongue hurts now.

  • That's stupid!!!... What you are basically saying is that bass exists to be played no matter how and that's it... That's why bass is so underrated! Nobody cares too much about it...

It just needs to be there even though we can't really hear it... Just like in and justice for all...

Plus... What matters is that you are playing melodies?

Melody, harmony and counterpoint and bass are different musical concepts my friend... Read a book!

I love metallica by the way :)

  • @blindchild6 bass is underrated for some reasons, 1st of all, the focus of media is vocals and guitars, always was, the 2nd point is related to the 1st point, if the focus is on the guitars, everyone wants to play guitar instead of other instruments.

with melodies i mean songs, is that hard to understand?

  • @ArtQuakedoom95x4 Hey my friends keep telling i should learn the slaps on the bass but i said no then they said... wow then you can't play bass i'm like WTF?!?! i said fuck off to them.

  • @Underatedkid You can use slap technique on guitar too. Does it mean that anyone who can't do that can't play guitar?

  • @ArtQuakedoom95x4 what about ur teeth? nails? those are another alternatives xD

  • @ArtQuakedoom95x4 And with that said, we need to hear more of Jason's bass lines on this album.

  • you know you guys really bug me with all this talk about great bass players cause i always see one of the best ones left off, the guy that would have and sort of did surpass cliff and thats roger paterson of atheist he even died simaler to cliff and used all 4 fingers and made it look easy as fuck if you dont know about him look him up on here he died right after they started working on their second album in 91

  • @jonBENDER1 Tons of bass players surpassed Cliff. He died young so he's overrated. There are plenty bassists better then him and I think Jason was best for Metallica. He used a pick which is more aggressive and faster, that fits Metallica better IMO

  • @JollyJollyJoseph i agree on him being faster, dyers eve is there fastest song i think to date next to damaged inc and they needed jason for that and justice is my favorite album of theirs but nothing is that fast from black album on so i dont think you can justify them needing him for the later albums but i can say that had he been able to write more they wouldent have got so weak so fast

  • @jonBENDER1 Well yeah the black album is different when it comes to needing him for speed but, it's more then that. I'm just sayin' that in my opinion Jason's style fits Metallica best.

  • @jonBENDER1 Damage inc is very fast but I would say that fight fire with fire is faster than damage inc and possibly dyers eve but i'm not 100% sure. all i know is that fight fire with fire is fucking fast lol

  • @RattleheadMoney95 Agreed!

  • @RattleheadMoney95 1# fight 2# depends on the part

  • @Bestintheworld1320 Alright thanks man, there all really fast songs lol

  • @JollyJollyJoseph surpassed maybe ..but no one is as influential to the instrument...cliff is actually underated,he got more kids playing bass than anybody, except maybe steve harris..he was24, composing great shit that people still regaurd as pure greatness...and so you know its not better then.... its better than....cliff looms over metallica so much that everyone else who comes in knows their in 2nd place in the fans hearts...losing cliff still affects metallicas music,in a bad way...

  • @JollyJollyJoseph

You speak the truth. He was very sloppy. If he didn't die people wouldn't talk about him so much. Jason was tight as hell on these recordings.

  • get off your high horse about fingers vs. pick. if you are a true music afficionado you will recognize and accept the existence and concept of different styles and the coexistence of talent.

  • Comment removed

  • pS: AWESOME TRACK!

  • I dont get why people hate when others are using a pick insteead of their fingers...I mean wats wrong with using a pick? if you like their music it means you like it, and it means you dont give a crap what they are using to play!

  • steve goes through a track 10,20 times to right a bass riff very percise so when hes playing live off the top of his head he cant pull it off anyone can sound good on a recording cause you dont know how many time it took to get it right its called clip tracking i know ive seen all them play except for cliff

  • cliff was the best bass player of all time!!!!!jason made the live shows with his stage and vocal presence robs good but he lacks in tone for such a seasoned player and steve is one of my favoret bass players but live his solos are shit hes the kind of bass player that sits and goes through a track 10,20 times to get it right

  • @jonBENDER1 Rob lacks in tone......uh......have you seen Metallica live with Rob? He makes Metallica's riffs boom.

  • @rocafella142 uh ya duh thats why i said it in the comment after, you know the one that was above this one ive seen him with ozzy 3 time suicidal 2 and once supposedly my friend claims at a house party up in santa monica in Infectious Grooves but i dont recall it but the party was sick

  • @jonBENDER1 When i typed that I was being sarastic -.- Rob doesn't lack in tone. He gives Metallica a full sound. Maybe he did with Ozzy and I'm sure his gear had stuff to do with it, but with Metallica no way in hell.

  • @rocafella142 i dont know what it is man i would never say gear is a factor just sounds like a bad excuse to me its the musician that makes it work and his rerecordings of ozzy are awfull i love suicidal with him thou

  • @jonBENDER1 suicidal tendencies he was good. and when you hear him live in metallica he sounds excellent. I heard him play Orion and I was blown away. he gives them a powerful tone. all their songs sound good with him they punch to directly in the chest.

  • hmmmm doesnt really sound like newsteds tone, it should be more bassy then this

  • @theycalledmebob lol and justice for all sucked when it came to trying to hear for the bass likne remember

  • @6ftUnder92592 well listen to later albums of metallica, jasons tone is much thicker

  • Guys for those who thing that Jason is a better bass player than Cliff it(s your opinion, but for me, Cliff is way better than Jason not only in speed, but also in inovation and of course on stage and musical taste, but Jason is also a killer bass player. But for those who think that Rob is better than them, Guys sincerely, YOUR FOOLS!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @TheMETALNROSES hey rob is good. cliff is best no doubt and jason is just that guy that was there

  • i think you all should just find the nearset bridge and jump off for sayin jason is a better bass player then cliff. really kill yourselfs

  • robs a better player then them both so dont stress

  • i think jason is a better bass player than cliff, and he was better at the stage

  • @squall6575 jason is way better than cliff man. cliff is good, sure, but talking that about jason is a sin. just listen to whiplash bass track. its sooooo sloppy. cliff is OVERRATED. using a pick dosnt make a bass player bad

  • @victordeseguroesdios Listen to Orion then, or Battery, Master of Puppets, etc

  • @fayufo yeah, cliff is good, but in my opinion, jason is better. btw battery and master are nothing special on bass

  • @victordeseguroesdios I never said Jason is bad. He has been my favorite bassist in Metallica, he had a lot of attitude, but I fucking love Cliff too

  • @fayufo ok, sorry

  • this is really some angry shit. like he'd know what would happen.

  • rofl about the jason newstead having chops beyong cliif's. Im not even being a fanboy here its just that jason never produced much worth looking at. never innovative and its easier to play this with a pick. not to mention theres nothing i hear on this im sure cliff couldnt play. plus tallica isnt that technical so theres not much to base this on

  • Gotta say it: Jason Newstead's chops are beyond Cliff's. I think Cliff's importance to Metallica was more creative than anything.

  • they turned it down because they were intentionally being dickheads to jason out of spite for cliff burton's death.

  • @lynchthetrolls34 Actually, I read in an interview that it was due to Lars and James' big ego, they mixed the guitar and drums way too high, drowning out the bass.

  • @Chr1sda4 no they were just pissed about cliff. i also saw that in an interview.

  • @lynchthetrolls34 What interviews are these?

  • @lynchthetrolls34 And same with most people who criticize Jason for ridicolous such as using a pick.

  • @lynchthetrolls34

Humm... Now, by hearing this bass recording, I understand why Hetfield and Ulrich commited an injustice to Jason while recording this album. The 7" EP "Garage Days Re-revisited" has better bass sound and the following album, "Metallica" (or "Black Album") is the most sucessful Metallica's album to date.

  • Three best bass players. Cliff, Jason, Les Claypool not in that order so I don't piss off the bass nazis.

  • How does he get such a twangy sound without dropping his tune by like 3 notes?

  • @MrBigblob94 Just setting the neck/action on low that the strings just hit the fretboard, and then play with some HUGE ATTACK \m/

  • @MrBigblob94 lower the action and play with a pick

  • Newsted is a great bass player and has awsome stage presence. its to bad he didnt get any respect by anyone including his own band

  • @Scarecrow545 I agree. Steve is a kick ass bassist. His tone on "The Philosopher" is amazing.

  • what is he holding :O

  • @ren2593 i think that was a cup

  • @isnopitag nop! it's a paper with some pic on it

  • This is my favorite Metallica song.....For some reason I like This one(Dyers Eve) and Fight Fire with Fire more than all their other ones.Even all their singles

  • Oh wow, I have had this record for over 20 years and this is the first time I have ever heard the bad ass bass in this song.

  • can anybody tab this out pplz? :D

  • When the hell are Metallica going to remix this goddamn album?

  • @runirokk they did it .. but only offical only for guitar hero

  • @runirokk There's tons of remixed versions up for sale.

  • @bbelilovsky u mean home made ?:P

  • @ragnaroksama Not necessarily, as far as I'm aware there was a remixed version released by the label.

  • Jason the hard sucker.

  • @SpearShark Are you Crazy!!!!If you think that way dont watch his videos stupid

  • @bobi16331 you also

  • @SpearShark Get lost

  • burton=newsted>trujillo

  • burton=newsted>trujillo

  • not much a fan of jason but his bass sure does sound awesome

  • You should play this in time with the original recording, if you get it in sync the verses sound so fucking heavy with this added in this mix :)

  • @Shougunner search for "and justice for jason". It's the same album, but with boosted bass volume.

  • first it was cliff and he was in a bus accident and when the bus hit a patch of ice he was thrown from the bed he was sleeping in and he was crushed by the bus. then jason came into picture but they didnt like him because he couldnt control his liquor so the fired him and got robert which is all i know about the history of the bassist of metallica

  • @sum41kidwe no they fired dave mustaine and got kirk hammett both guitarist not bassist

  • @sum41kidwe

Jason actually left the band.. Haven't you seen the documentary Some Kind of Monster? It gets explained quite well there. James Hetfield was the one with the Liquor problem.

  • @pizzaislekker HAHAHA yeah but that way after Dave was kicked out. Dave's problem was that he became violent when he drank. James didn't become so violent but he knew he drank too much so he fixed it

  • @pizzaislekker yeah he left because he wasnted to play music and he didnt have a wife and kids to take breaks from the band for. i appreciate that about him, not so much his bass playing though lol

  • Respond to this video... rythym guitar taht forgot distortion?

  • @pizzaislekker lol lars: he fucking left the band x 10

  • @sum41kidwe No Cliff was second Ron was first and the one who was fired because he couldnt control his liquor was Dave, Jason left because of Echobrain

  • @sum41kidwe you're so wrong dude. Jason never had problems with his drinking they didn't threw him out, he left.

  • robert trujillo toca con los dedos pero no tiene la esencia en el escenario ni la voz de jason

  • This sounds like to live is to die not dyers eve.

  • @JudasIscariot1313 And just how the hell is that possible? You hear how fast it's going?

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBoaConstrictor95 ? He isn't dead

  • @CheesyRhino Really? I thought he was. Maybe I'm mistaking him for someone else.

  • @TheBoaConstrictor95 Cliff Burton? He was their bassist before Jason, he died in a bus accident.

  • @CheesyRhino Ah, yes. That's the one. Well, RIP Cliff Burton. He was a hell of a lot better than the their newest bassist.

  • hes a pussy thats more succesful then youll ever be

  • Bassist that use picks are pussy's.

  • @URIBENFILM you are a pussy

  • @MrSpyndis You came out of a pussy.

  • Comment removed

  • @URIBENFILM So you're saying that Chris Squire, Lemmy and Gene Simmons are pussys? grow up retard and listen to other bands you fuckin Cliff burton fanboy

  • @bugnny u mad bro?

  • @URIBENFILM pussy

  • @DrummingAddict88 you came out of a pussy too, so that makes you a pussy.

  • @URIBENFILM that was the most pathetic come back in the book... Pussy. haha

  • can some one please tell me what kind of bass is he using

    please

  • just i dont think its right for a bassist to use a pick

  • @TheLaMoFo totally wrong opinion

  • @yovioleatuzorramadre maybe but you gotta admit, anyone who can play Slap Bass is a BEAST! (i.e. Master of Puppets - Primus Bass solo)

  • @AndersonWave17 no thats NOOB BULLSHIT, claypool is a bum, Larry Graham is the only one that metters in slap bass technique, the best bassist just use fingers, otherwise a pick.

  • @yovioleatuzorramadre yea i agree, people jump too quickly towards claypool. theres plenty of other amazing bassists.i really like victor wooten for exmple

  • @TheLaMoFo Says who?

  • damn!! and I can hardly play this on guitar hero

  • If Cliff didn't leave us so young, he'd obviously develop and become one of the best metal bassist out there.

Unfortunately he left and the good Metallica pretty much died with him. I mean, he was only 24 when he died and already he wrote masterpieces like Orion and Master of Puppets.

  • @dbzsony you obviously stopped listening to metallicas newer albums without cliff

  • @Bishiup

    No.

I listen to every Metallica album. I don't listen to Load/ReLoad as much as their older stuff but I do listen to their newer stuff.

For me, the good Metallica is represented by their first 5 albums. I have a diverse music taste so I like Load/ReLoad with songs like Wasting my Hate, King Nothing, Unforgiven 2, Fuel etc but it's evident that Metallica were at their prime during the 80s.

  • Klaus Flouride would be proud

  • Jason plays with a pick cliff doesnt cliff is way better its easier to play faster with a pick then with your fingers

  • Is this the track they went with in the masters? There are some inconsistencies here and there, but maybe they thought, oh well, the guitars will drown those out just nicely :P

It's really a shame they mixed it like that tho :(

  • so good
