@wonderwoman7020 If you can't afford lessons right away, I'd recommend at least taking group classes with a certified coach, so that you can learn the basics. Another option would be to see if you can split the cost of a lesson with another skater, as some coaches may allow for this. This way, although it's not a private lesson per se, you would be getting more attention than you would in your group classes.
Hmmm... it's really not a good idea to teach yourself how to skate. You may end up with bad technique, bad habits are hard to break, plus it can be dangerous! I mean, if you can't afford lessons it's OK, but personally, I believe that having lessons is fundamental in figure skating. Before my coach started taking lessons she taught herself how to skate, and she ended up with cellulitis on her toe from picking the wrong way on toe loops.
@triciamatsuda If you can't afford lessons, I would AT LEAST take a ice skating group classes. That way, you'll at least be shown correct techniques by a good, and (hopefully) qualified teacher.
yeah, only 4 months, hehe. My first time on the ice was last yr in february, that's when I started taking lessons. Good thing I got a coach as soon as I started skating, this way I am less likely to get bad habits from improper techniques. Not even my coach can do outside spread eagles haha. I learned that one by myself, in 2 months. Don't ask me how, it just came to me, hehe. I am a very unusual skater, like, I can do backspins better than forward spins, and a loop better than a salchow... lol
wow I've been skating for a year now-i just started private lessons 3 mos ago-group lessons did not help me progress at all!! i am testing pre-pre moves soon and in my spare time, i'm working on my spread eagle (outside) for future synchronized skating moves that my team wants to do. wow, you are very talented-I probably got some bad habits-and group lessons taught everything the easy way, so i basically had to start over last november!!
I hear ya, once you get bad habits, they are so hard to break. I was lucky to get a coach as soon as I decided I wanted to learn how to skate. I was 23 yrs old, I started late, Im 24 now and Ive been skating for 1 yr. Ive never tried group lessons, but if ur serious about skating, having a coach is the way to go. I wanna compete in the adult category, I am too old for the reg nationals :-( I would love to try synchro someday, it looks like tons of fun. What are u working on right now in skating?
Ooh i do synchro!! And yes it is fun!!!! there are adult synchro teams too, u kno. I got a coach after 8 mos of group-right now, I am testing-like in a month-my pre-pre. moves. and I would be ahead and doing loops and sitspins and stuff, but i kinda had to re-learn lots!! but freestyle wise, i can do an okay scratch spin, a toe-loop, a waltz jump, and sometimes i can do a salchow. i take a cross-training class and other skaters there taught me how to do off ice loops and flips and lutzes.
and im planning on doing skating/synchro until i graduate from high school-3 1/2 yrs-or possibly later! btw, im guessing that you have wide/flexible hips b/c u were already able to do spread eagles-u are too lucky!!!
Hmmm... like my coach said, open hips are both a blessing and a curse. I can do spread eagles, but I struggle with my right forward inside mohawk coz of my hips!! I wouldnt say I am lucky, I mean, mohawks are required elements in MIF, spread eagles are not!
Good luck on ur pre pre, I am sure u will do fine. I am taking my adult pre-bronze freestyle and my adult bronze MIF in march, I cant wait! Ur lucky u have ppl to teach u how to do jumps off ice, my coach hasnt taught me any exercises...
Oh, that must really suck!!! And, well at least with synchro, we do mohawks all the time to change direction!!! but i'm sure you'll eventually get the hang of it..once you get to novice moves, if u plan on it, your choctaws will be great though-and they look really hard!! actually, my test session got moved, so im testing in march too! good luck to you too-im sure u'll pass! oh yea, with the jumps, u basically do the jump-but for loops, you do two-footed loops.
I wanna try synchro someday!!! I can do mohawks, but its my forward inside right mohawk that bugs me coz of my open hips... I do brackets, rockers and counters better than mohawks. Ive tried doing choctaws before, they are sooooooooo hard!!! I would skate everyday if I wasnt a full time nurse, most weeks I end up working 50 hours or more, and I am finishing my degree online on top of that... how old are you? How long have u been skating overall?? just curious hehe
ohhh i see....i can kinda do brakets...and my friend showed me how to do a rocker-i did one, but it was really slow :) wow yea im 14-hehehe ur like 10 years older than me...and ive been skating for a year now-you're much better than me!!! AND you're a full time nurse with college-wow!!! thats impressive!!!
Yeah, rockers and counters are hard to do, especially counters, haha. You are so lucky you are 14, you started late, but not as late as me! You might be able to do doubles and triples, unlike me... they say that if u start as an adult, its not likely that you will do doubles and triples... Im working on fixing all my jumps by jumping higher and getting rid of my bad wild free leg habit... I do flip jumps like Caroline Zhang lol. Anyway, Im jealous ur 14, by the time ur my age, ull be a pro!!!!
well yea but i'm just not sure if i am going to skate for that long-i really really want to skate in college, but idk if i'll have time!!! yes, more height will most probably help you if you want to get to doubles and triples-and building up ur core strength shud help u with that!! i take a cross-training/gymnastics class and all we work on is flexibility and core strength (like pushups and crunchies and cardio stuff0.
im sure u could do that kind of stuff on your own and you just might be able to do some higher level stuff-i mean, its really not complicated, basically its just working out a lot!! idk how much it wud help u-its pretty basic stuff tho, but it helped me get much much stronger-but thats mostly b/c i was not athletic like at all before i started to ice skate!
what is the difference between having a coach, and taking lessons? i have been ice skating for three months now, and i'm learning from a friend how to figure skate. but it's hard because she has to practice a lot and can't always work with me, so i might get a coach, but i'm wondering if lessons would be better if there is a difference?
There is definetely a big difference between taking group and private lessons. I would definetely go with a coach and private lessons, because your coach helps you work at your own pace and your specific needs. If you can't afford it, then go with private lessons, that's better than teaching yourself how to skate. Don't try new things without being taught how to do them, or you will get bad habits... btw, I actually taught myself how to do the spread eagles, my coach can't do them lol.
very very very good spread eagles for a beginner, many skaters with jumps and spins cant do that :)by the way my first coach started as an adult too, most of the things he taught me- he cant do himself :)
Youve been skating for 12 yrs, how old are you now u look pretty young
i wouldnt feel bad at all, not everyone can do spread eagles... i had to learn how to them on my own coz my coach started skating as an adult, she cant do them either hehe. I love outside spread eagles, its a beautiful move, but I would trade my spread eagles for your jumps and spins, wanna switch lol
hahah idk....im 14....haha so ive been skating since i was 2....
but i read that other comment bout you wanting to be able to so Ina Bauers.....I can do those and bend really far back....those took a while to learn but they're so beautiful
thanx. the funny thing is that i am 24 and i was able to do spread eagles in 2 months since i had started skating. and i am not even flexible hehe. i learned how to do them myself, not even my coach can do them hehehehe. i want to perfect them though, and i want to become more flexible. i wish i had started skating when i was 5. i've been skating for 5 months now, and i think i could do much better than this...
I tried to do a spread eagle on sunday but i just ended up going in a circle =s and then i couldnt be bothered and gave up lol. I think i will ask my coach to show me in my lesson and then try again.
i can hold them for much longer. u should try it, but like my coach said, not everyone can do outside spread eagles. my coach started skating when she was 40 or so, she can't do them. I love the spread eagles but I wanna be able to do the Ina Bauer just like Shizuka Arakawa does

You don't have to be flexible to do spread eagles, you just need an opened hip or a lot of practise if you are closed hip! =]
btw, Yours are really pretty!
