Just a quick math calculation: $7000 goes to the surrogate mother if she successfully delivers but the costs can swell to over $20000. Where is the other $13000 per woman? Account for 50 women and that is $650,000 dollars. Not a small amount.
A few years ago I was managing a factory in India for a US-based company. The local manager was very eager to please, but I was puzzled when he said he would ‘prove his authority’ & asked me to point to any worker at random.
I chose a young lad, but was horrified when the guy then fired him on the spot. The lad broke down & pleaded with me that “my family will starve”, but was forcibly ejected & I didn’t want to undermine the local guy by over-ruling him.
I have no sympathy whatsoever for this couple. Surrogacy in their home country would have cost near 100,000 US dollars. They went to India to take advantage of impoverished people and get a surrogacy experience for a fraction of the cost. Get over it.

The price alone is not the entire reason we went. Surprisingly the cost of surrogacy in UK is exactly the same as in India. A little known fact. Add in the airfares it actually works out dearer in India than in my own country! Another little known fact.

Indian law is very different from other countries as the doctor said and the surrogate can claim the baby is hers once its born. Homeless children are not available. The parents prefer to keep their own children, no matter how horible their life is. Unmarried Girls keep their children and let you the tax payer pay their bills. They have no intention or want to give up their children. Look at the number of children born to unmarried women. Years ago, it was not acceptable to children, if you were unmarried. Now times are different. Years ago women would give up the babies for adoption, that now almost never happens.

Many of the moms have had many failed pgs, IVF cycles, and even some near death. If you can have yourown child, do not be critical of those that only have this way to be natural parents. IVF is not certain. Failures occur in all clinics even in the US. Living conditions for the S moms is better than their homes

I think I am failing to see the problem here. If this money can literally pull thier family out of the slums and give them all a better life in only nine months, where is the problem? Surrogacy is going to happen regarless, so should these people be giving thier money to rich white westereners instead? The price alone is not the entire reason we went. Surprisingly the cost of surrogacy in UK is exactly the same as in India. A little known fact. Add in the airfares it actually works out dearer in India than in my own country! Another little known fact.

We're turning our own specie to shit. Natural selection is there to keep the specie healthy and making it evolve. Pigeons often lack natural selection because people feed them, and they just end up deformed and full of sicknesses. Same for humans. Some people are meant to live, some are meant to die and some aren't meant to be born. Sounds horrible, but it's life. I'd rather see them adopt orphans that have a good gene pool. Er... check the fertility rates by country. The country with the lowest birth rates are not European. It's Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Japan. China and Taiwan also have low birth rates (lower than France, New Zealand, etc).

China is basically 90% of East Asia. It's huge, its something like 65% larger than all of Europe excluding the Asian part of Russia. If you included all of Europe's population it's something like 700 million. Add the million of other whites from the US, Canada, Argentina, Australia, NZ, South Africa, etc... and you have a population a bit more than a billion. The Chinese population is just more unified and concentrated in one area. The total of Chinese outside China is only 60 million.

Full costs was explained to us by Dr Patel when we did surrogacy August 08. Again by another clinic in 2005.
One has to do research and not blindly follow or listen to anything or anybody.
We've done 10 surrogacy attempts in India. Are expecting our second all at different clinics. Our baby is beautiful and we're Indians (UK born).

It isn't selling a child. These women are lending their wombs (at their own free will) to help people who cannot have a child of their own. I don't see anything wrong with it. The poor women are getting more money than they could have received normally, and barren women are getting children. The children are getting loving families. Who is suffering?

The concern is not so much about the issue of consent. It's about the commercialization of surrogacy. Dr. Patel is making a PROFIT from her surrogacy business. Once you introduce money into the picture, you inevitably have to deal with power, ownership, and entitlements. Think of the moral and legal implications of making a baby into a commodity. In a marketplace, not everyone is honest, well-intentioned or responsible. What happens to the child if someone wants to pull out of the contract?

Who is considered the rightful parent of the child--the one who provides the egg/sperm, the one who actually gives birth, the one who's paying for all the medical expenses or the one who eventually raises the child? The definition of parenthood varies from country to country. Traditionally, only ONE WOMAN fulfilled all of the above roles. With commercial surrogacy, there are more parties involved. Should money always trump biology in determining parentage (even with mutual contract in place)?
